The materialwas devel- oped with special emphasis on learnings in bicycle safetyas a . partof the total educational experience for children in school. The present revision results from its continuing usefulness and o de- sire to update the basically sound material in light ofcurrent conditions, Many bicycle safety activities in schools have been special. programs of a temporary nature. It is the hope of the Commis- sion that the earlier edition of this bulletin has contributed to more forward-looking programsones in which bicycle safety in schools has become a logical Area of classroom instruction de- signed to meet the changing needs of our children. Crowded streets, the number of traffic accidents involving bicycles, and the increas- ing number of bicycles being used by younger children, mandate our continuing concern for safety in cycling. Bicycle safety instruction has value beyond that of producing safe cyclists. It fosters sound citizenship values and developsa sense of responsibility while increasing independence and respect for property. It also influences children to take an active interest in related traffic safety problems, including that of becominga good driver. The original production was guided by a committee headed by Miss Thelma Reed, Principal, William Volker School, Kansas 5 i City, Missouri. If the school curriculum is closely related to the needsofyoung people and community life, it is logical to consider .',..s. area as a necessary part of that curriculum. An effective bicycle safety education pro- gram requires careful planning and involves thecdopeiation of the principal, faculty, parents, children, and local officials. Initial planning for an effective program of bicycle safety depends on the consideration of such questions as these: What has the school been doing in bicycle safety instruction? Has the faculty considered this problem and ways of solving it? Are the students aware of the problem and do they show an interest in solving it? Are the parents aware that the extensive use of bicycles is creating a growing problem for young children? Do the police and other public officials fully recognize the need for bicycle safety instruction? 9 Answers to these questions will givedirection to school plan- ning in bicycle safety. The successof an instructional program hinges on the active interest of theprincipal, the faculty, and the students. The principal, as in the casecf other instructional pro- grams, is responsible forstimulating interest in bicycle safety for organizing the resources of the school, andfor coordinating the instructional program. Relating Bicycle Safety toClassroom Instruction Teachers more and more are usingeveryday situations in- volving bikes to teach specific informationabout them and to apply general principles of safety.Bicycle safety instruction in the classroom has a direct and effective influence onchildren, especially when it is part of the total Lommunityeffort to achieve safe cycling practices. In the Lower Grades Teachers of young children find that manyinteresting and valuable lessons can be centered around bicycle safety.The *ace- wheeler or sidewalk tricycle, if not the two-wheeler,is a part 01 the daily experience of most children as they developbalance and cc-ordination.     Adventures in Western New York History MANUFACTURERS OF WHEELS AND MOTORS By Roger Squire The Bicycle The bicycle reached the height of its popularity in the late nineteenth century. It was both a cheap, quick means of travel over a short distance and a pleasant, healthful sport. Before it reached its maximum efficiency, however, it went through the usual evolution of a complex machine. The idea of riding on a seat directly over wheels occurred to several Europeans in the early 1800's. The man credited with the invention of the first practical two-wheeled vehicle was Karl von Drais, Baron of Saurbronn, who in 1816 appeared on the streets of Karlsruhe, Germany, on a contraption called the Draisine. A Frenchman, Chevalier de Sivrac, had invented a hobby-horse, the Celerifere, in 1790, but his model was of little use since it could not be steered. The Draisine consisted basically of two small carriage wheels and a length of wood called a backbone, connected with two v- shaped uprights rising from the front and rear hubs of the wheels. Other parts were the saddle and back rest, and a crude tiller for steering. The rims of the wheels were covered with bands of iron. The rider moved forward by pushing the ground alternately with his feet and coasting between strokes. It was strenuous, but could double a man's pace with half the effort of walking. This invention was followed in Europe by such variations as the Dandy-Horse, Swiftwalker, velocipede, and Bivector. In 1838 a Scottish blacksmith, Kirkpatrick MacMillan, pro- duced the first bicycle that could be driven with both feet off the ground.

    ©JSR2012 A Tale of Invention A Tale of Invention: the birth of the modern bicycle John S. Reid Introduction This is a sequel to my piece on the Physics of Cycling, though perhaps it should be a prequel since in concerns the evolution of the bicycle itself in the 19th century. As I write this it’s near mid-winter, too cold or too wet or too windy for my fair-weather cycling habits. However with the poor weather has come the opportunity to browse the Scientific American pages over some 30 years leading up to the end of the 19th century. One of the subjects that has caught my attention is how the bicycle developed from its primitive mid-century form to something recognizably modern. The Scientific American was then quite parochial, concentrating on American inventions but reporting on events in Europe too. It was in fact a magazine more for technophiles than a prime source of science but 19th century America was a hot-bed of technical invention and the Scientific American survived by being up-with-the- times. The bicycle became very popular in Britain, France and other European countries as the century progressed but it did so in America too and by the end of the century American bikes were as good as any in the world. They would have said ‘better’. Sticking with the American based perspective gives a good flavour of the changes that were happening in other countries too. One of the fascinating aspects of my browsing was to see the variations on the bicycle theme that have failed the test of time or given rise to other devices we now don’t particularly associate with bicycles.
