TABLE DES MATIÈRES RÉSUMÉ VI INTRODUCTION CHAPITRE!

This painful recycling of history should make him—and us—want to know what unhealable wound, what recurrent pathology, what cause too deep for journalists and politicians to discern draws men and women to their deaths again and again in such a place. The history of Rome, as has often been true in the past, has much to teach us.

This with the of seat of "gateway" opened passing Italy, government of the Western part of the Roman Empire, into rude barbarian hands, when Ravenna and Rome, chief cities of this Roman Empire in the West, fell in 476 to the invader Odovacar and his Germanic hordes; when, in his turn, Odovacar was forced, some seventeen years later, to yield to another barbarian conqueror, who seized his throne at Ravenna, overran his kingdom, killed him by his own hand, and thus became lord of Italy and its people.

Mai 2011 Workshopmaterialien Interaction of Germanic Personal Names with Latin Onomastics in the Late-Roman West. The Different Cases of Gothic, Vandalic and Lombard Names. Nicoletta Francovich Onesti Freitag, 27. Mai 2011, 11.00-13.00 Uhr Hotel Aquino Abstract: The evolution of Late-Latin personal names in Italy and North Africa in the age of migrations. The gradual interaction with Gothic, Vandalic and Lombard names and subsequent modifications of Roman names in the early Middle Ages is discussed in detail. The different levels of change in Vandal Africa, where the input of Germanic names was scarce, and in Ostrogothic Italy. During the long-lasting Lombard kingdom of Italy (568- 774) the influence of Germanic personal names grew stronger, and the exchange between Latin and Lombard traditions intensified in the second half of the eighth century. The study of personal names may reveal the new linguistic Romance trends that would not otherwise show in the Latin texts of the time. The African heritage was effaced by the Arab conquest; in Italy the ancient Gothic and Lombard personal names did not survive as such, but were sometimes preserved as family names.

  • Granholm Genealogy
GRANHOLM GENEALOGY GOTHS ROYAL ANCESTRY INTRODUCTION The Goths ancestry is unique in how it originates in Sweden and for a few hundred years was an important part of the history of Europe. It ties into our ancestors in the dynasties of the Franks and Hungarians with Attila the Hun (48th great grandfather) , see the books Frank Royal Ancestry and Hungarian Royal Ancestry. Below is a brief description of the Goths followed by ancestry listings with highlighted persons, who are further described. The historian Jordanes claims that the Goths originated in semi-legendary Scandza, believed to be located somewhere in modern Götaland (Sweden), and that a Gothic population crossed the Baltic Sea before the 2nd century. Jordanes also states that the Goths gave their name to the region they colonized, Gothiscandza, which is believed to be the lower Vistula region in Poland. From the middle of the 2nd century onward, groups of Goths migrated to the southeast along the River Vistula. They eventually reached the Black Sea in Ukraine, Romania and Moldova, where they left their archaeological traces in the Chernyakhov culture. The Goths are believed to have crossed the Baltic Sea sometime between the end of this period (ca 300 BC) and AD 100. Early archaeological evidence in the Swedish province of Östergötland suggests a general depopulation during this period. The settlement in today's Poland may correspond to the introduction of Scandinavian burial traditions, such as the stone circles and the stelae especially common on the island of Gotland and other parts of southern Sweden. In the 5th and 6th centuries, the Goths separated into two tribes, the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths.

  • Marriage and Alliance in the Merovingian Kingdoms, 481-639
MARRIAGE AND ALLIANCE IN THE MEROVINGIAN KINGDOMS, 481-639 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Ryan Patrick Crisp, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Joseph H. Lynch, Adviser Professor Barbara A. Hanawalt _______________________ Adviser Professor Frank T. Coulson History Department ABSTRACT The sources for studying the early Middle Ages make it clear that many saw kinship, both by blood and marriage, as an important and meaningful connection to others which should regulate one’s behavior. In examining more closely the history of the relations between kinsmen, however, it becomes quite evident that theory did not always meet practice. In fact, while no one necessarily denied the demands of kinship, other considerations often took precedence. What resulted was as much bloodshed and animosity between kinsmen as cooperation, and nowhere is this made more clear than in the Merovingian Frankish kingdoms of the sixth century. An explanation of the meaning, motives and practical implications of the kinship connections of the Merovingians, both those by blood and those made through marriage to other royal families, is rooted in the particular nature of the Merovingian kingdoms and Frankish kingship. For most of the sixth century, there was more than one ruling Frankish king at a time. This created a situation, therefore, where the resources of the Frankish kingdom were divided among multiple kings. These kings, who were also close kinsmen, fought with each other, both directly and indirectly, for control over a greater portion of the wealth, land, and leudes (sworn followers) of the kingdom.
