Title with chipped corner and staining from erased inscriptions, a single wormhole decreasing through the first half of text block, a few other small filled wormholes at beginning, occasional faint marginal dampstaining. Later (18th-century?) carta rustica. Provenance: two early deleted Italian ownership inscriptions on title-page; William O’Brien (1832-1899), 20th-century booklabel; bequeathed to the Jesuits at Milltown Park. $2950 First complete edition in Italian, and the first to be printed in Italy, of an important Franciscan mystical text which circulated widely in manuscript and print for nearly three centuries. Known in approximately 500 Latin manuscripts, far more than Bonaventura’s Meditationes vitae Christi, this was an extremely popular devotional work, with translations appearing in Middle High German, Middle Low German, Dutch, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Swedish, Danish, and English. Although most manuscripts attributed it to Bonaventura, the original Stimulus Amoris was the work of the thirteenth-century Franciscan friar Giacomo da Milano. His text is a series of spiritual exercises for meditation, leading to a progressive emotional engagement with the Passion, the goal being a mystical identification with Christ (DBI). -

The early fourteenth century has become a particularly active area of research in medieval philosophy and theology in the last two decades. Interest in Oxford thought led the way. Building upon the earlier publication of the works of Richard Campsale, William of Ockham, and the Lectura Secunda of Adam Wodeham, we now have editions of the works of Walter Chatton and Henry of Harclay, and questions from Thomas Wylton, Walter Burley, Richard Fitzralph, and Thomas Bradwardine. As regards Paris, the ongoing critical edition of the opera omnia of John Duns Scotus and a portion of Peter Auriol’s commentary on the Sentences is now been followed by projects for critical editions of the rest of Auriol’s commentary and the Sentences commentaries of Durand of St. Pourçain, Francis of Marchia, and Gerard Odonis. Philosophical Debates brings together many of those who are leading the research field on Parisian thought in the early fourteenth century. The essays themselves are the result of a joint project between Stephen Brown at Boston College and Thomas Dewender at Bonn, who hosted two conferences on this theme at their respective institutions. -

1 Conventions and Institutions Benedictine Rule Monastic orders existed in Ireland and Wales in the fifth century, first arrived in England in the sixth and seventh centuries, and in the eighth century the Rule of St. Benedict (480–ca. 550), Benedict’s set of codes for behavior, also came to be known in the British Isles. Receiving additional impetus after 1066 and then again with the arrival of orders of canons and friars in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the monastic orders had their maximum numbers at the beginning of the fourteenth century, declined with the pestilence later in the century, then recovered significantly. From their inception many monastic houses received large endowments, were powerful landholding institutions, and were deeply and directly involved in the economic, legal, and social lives of all of society’s strata in both imme- diate and extended geographical areas. William Caxton (ca. 1422–92) began his career as a merchant. In the 1440s he went to Bruges, Cologne, and Ghent where he began his career as a printer and translator. He returned to England in 1476 with movable type and proceeded to publish over one hundred titles in the remaining sixteen years of this life, including several of Chaucer’s, Gower’s, Lydgate’s, and Malory’s works as well as his own translations. Six English translations of the Benedictine rule survive from the eleventh century to 1516. None of the translations is dependent on each other, nor is any direct French or Latin source known. Caxton’s edition from about 1490 also contains Heinrich Suso’s Horologium sapientiae and other texts, and it, like several manuscript versions, is addressed to both men and women. -

BY ONE OF THE MOST SKILLFUL PAINTERS OF HIS GENERATION Book of Hours (Use of Paris) In Latin and French, illuminated manuscript on parchment France, Paris, c. 1460-1470 15 large miniatures and 6 historiated initials by an artist in the circle of the Coëtivy Master This is an undoubtedly Parisian Book of Hours, and it is attributed to an artist in the circle of the Coëtivy Master, deemed “the most important artist practicing in Paris in the third quarter of the century.” The inclusion of French prayers (or poems) and historiated initials for the virgin Saints Genevieve and Avia before the Hours of the Virgin and the richness of the bor- ders hint that it could have been made to order as a commission. The borders are richly decorated with sprays and knots of acanthus and abundant flowers, fruits, and birds, with clusters of strawberries throughout. BOH 168 • $100,000 2. In Latin, illuminated manuscript on parchment Southern Netherlands, Ghent or Bruges, c. 1480 4 full-page miniatures; 8 historiated initials Homespun realism characterizes this Book of Hours from the southern Netherlands. Painted by three artists, the manu- script is in fine condition with full-page pictures with generous margins and full-page pictures introducing the main textual sections. A Dutch-influenced artist painted one miniature and a historiated initial. A Flemish artist contributed the other full- page pictures. There are, however, at least two central problems with this assumption. First, mysticism in the Middle Ages – even just within the Christian tradition1 – was not a uniform movement with a single goal: it took different forms in different parts of Europe, and those forms changed substantially from the eleventh to the fifteenth century, particularly with the increased emphasis on personal piety and the feminization of religious imagery that emerges in the later centuries.2 The belief that mysticism entails the rejection or abandonment of reason in order to merge with the divine, for instance, represents only one strain of the medieval tradition. Although this view is explicitly advocated in the Christian West by such influential figures as Meister Eckhart and Marguerite Porete, the prevalent identification of the allegorical figure of Wisdom with Christ provides the grounds for equally prominent figures such as Hildegard of 1 In several respects, mysticism played a more integral role in Arabic and Jewish philosophy than in Christian philosophy from late antiquity through the Middle Ages. -

Chris Schabel* Terminology A search through the Universal Short Title Catalogue (USTC), WorldCat, Google Books, the SIEPM website,1 and other online sources for incunabula and early printed books revealed that by 1500 what we now call "Sentences commentaries" or "commentaries on the Sentences" by 26 authors had been printed in whole or in part close to 100 times.2 Nevertheless, according to these online sources, only ten printings by a mere three of these authors are entitled something like "commentaries": the Franciscan Richard of Mediavilla's Commentum was first published in 1473 and then four more times before 1500, the Franciscan Bonaventure's Commentarius came out twice in 1477 and then once more before the end of the century, and the Augustinian Giles of Rome's Commentum was printed in 1482 and again in 1492.
