It originates in the medieval university and stands alongside the holdings of the Colleges and the Fitzwilliam Museum. Th e University Library contains major European examples of medieval illumination from the ninth to the sixteenth centuries, with acknowledged masterpieces of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance book art, as well as illuminated literary texts, including the fi rst complete Chaucer manuscript. Th is catalogue provides scholars and researchers easy access to the University Library’s illuminated manuscripts, evaluating the importance of many of them for the very fi rst time. It contains descriptions of famous manuscripts – for example, the Life of Edward the Confessor attributed to Matthew Paris – as well as hundreds of lesser-known items. Beautifully illustrated throughout, the catalogue contains descriptions of individual manuscripts with up-to-date assessments of their style, origins and importance, together with bibliographical references. PAUL BINSKI is Professor of the History of Medieval Art at Cambridge University. He specializes in the art and architecture of medieval Western Europe. His previous publications include Th e Painted Chamber at Westminster (1986), Westminster Abbey and the Plantagenets (1995), which won the Longman History Today Book of the Year award, and Becket’s Crown: Art and Imagination in Gothic England, 1170–1300 (2004), winner of the 2006 Historians of British Art Prize and the Ace-Mercers 2005 International Book Prize. -

Provenance: two early deleted Italian ownership inscriptions on title-page; William O’Brien (1832-1899), 20th-century booklabel; bequeathed to the Jesuits at Milltown Park. $2950 First complete edition in Italian, and the first to be printed in Italy, of an important Franciscan mystical text which circulated widely in manuscript and print for nearly three centuries. Known in approximately 500 Latin manuscripts, far more than Bonaventura’s Meditationes vitae Christi, this was an extremely popular devotional work, with translations appearing in Middle High German, Middle Low German, Dutch, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Swedish, Danish, and English. Although most manuscripts attributed it to Bonaventura, the original Stimulus Amoris was the work of the thirteenth-century Franciscan friar Giacomo da Milano. His text is a series of spiritual exercises for meditation, leading to a progressive emotional engagement with the Passion, the goal being a mystical identification with Christ (DBI). -

bmgn - Low Countries Historical Review | Volume 129-2 (2014) | pp. 42-62 Empathy in the Making Crafting the Believer’s Emotions in the Late Medieval Low Countries1 herman roodenburg The article addresses affective piety as it developed in the late medieval Low Countries – the new, sentiment-laden devotion concentrating on the humanity and vulnerability of Christ, on his nativity but especially his Passion, the physical cruelty he suffered in his last days on earth. Views on the late Middle Ages, as if they still knew a ‘childlike’ universe, one in which the emotions and the senses were given free rein, have been rightly discarded by Barbara Rosenwein and other scholars, but her own cognitive approach threatens to overlook the bodily and sensory dimensions of emotions. An embodiment approach would offer a wider and more promising perspective. Discussing the numerous Netherlandish passion narratives and passion paintings, their cruel and blood-drenched imagery is situated within older medieval traditions of meditation and artificial memory. To illustrate the period’s religious ‘pathopoeia’, the shaping of the believers’ embodied emotions, part of the argument focuses on a relatively unknown Passion narrative by the fifteenth-century Franciscan Johannes Brugman. Eschatology and Discernment of Spirits: The Impact of Peter of John Olivi’s Remedia contra Temptationes Spirituales (14th-15th Centuries)1 In the last years of his life, between 1292 and 1298, the Franciscan Peter of John Olivi wrote a series of short devotional texts, known as Opus- cula, aimed at the religious edification of the laity. Olivi’s perspective was strongly eschatological: in his opinion, the imminence of the end of time made lay religious experience more authentic than that of the clergy, which would eventually oppose the final evangelical renewal. Among the twelve surviving Opuscula, the most eschatologically ori- ented is titled Remedia contra temptationes spirituales. The Remedia are characterized by a cautious and rigorous judgment on spiritual gifts, such as visions and raptures. According to Olivi, these phenomena are particularly difficult to discern when the Antichrist is approaching and “some will renounce the faith by paying heed to deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons” (I Tim 4, 1). Following this apocalyptic per- spective of discretio spirituum, the Remedia are divided into two parts: the first includes twelve remedies against spiritual temptations, whereas the second puts forward four remedies against corrupt teachers and their doctrines. This structure, however, is not fixed. The work is transmitted by a huge number of manuscripts, and is often attributed, as we will see, to other authors (Bonaventure, Venturino of Bergamo), or forms part of larger works (such as Ludolph of Saxony’s Vita Christi or Vincent Fer- rer’s Tractatus de vita spirituali). Accordingly, its structure remains fluid from version to version. -

IMAGES OF MARY IN THE LIBRI CAROLINI Diego Ianiro References to the Virgin Mary are quite rare in the writings produced at the court of Charlemagne before 794.1 With the doubtful exception of marian sermons gathered in the homiliary of Paul the Deacon, among the works released between the Admonitio generalis (789) and the Council of Frankfurt (794) it is possible to find several mentions of the Mother of God only in the Libri Carolini.2 Paul’s homiliary was in fact commissioned by Charlemagne, as it is clearly stated in its prefatory letter known as Karoli epistola generalis,3 in a period that cannot be determined with precision: in recent scolarship it ranges approximately from 786, the year before Paul’s return to Monte Cassino, to 796/799,4 the alleged date of his death. In order to account for the installation of the Franks on the Italian peninsula, our manuals have clung to a received vulgate. CODA PARTICIPATING IN SYMBOLS OF DEATH Like Nicholas Love’s Mirror, The Somonyng of Everyman is adapted from a Continental text, in this case from the Dutch Elckerlijc. As reading matter designed to appeal to the merchant and artisan classes in an urban setting, Everyman invokes neither pastoral nor monastic contemplation but rather invites participation through an imaginative confrontation with Death and subsequent pilgrimage leading to entry into the grave. The study of Everyman in terms of participation in the symbols of death and dying can serve as an appropriate capstone to the present volume, hence originally intended to be a final chapter. Shaftel Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 Abstract THOMASON, EMILY C, M.A., August 2020, Art History Catholic Transtemporality through the Lens of Andrea Pozzo and the Jesuit Catholic Baroque Director of Thesis: Samuel Dodd Andrea Pozzo was a lay brother for the Order of the Society of Jesus in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries who utilized his work in painting, architecture, and writing to attempt to create an ideal expression of sacred art for the Counter- Reformation Catholic Church. The focus of this study is on Pozzo’s illusionary paintings in Chiesa di Sant’Ignazio di Loyola in Rome as they coincide with his codification of quadratura and di sotto in su, as described through perspectival etchings and commentary in Perspectiva Pictorum et Architectorum. This thesis seeks to understand the work of Pozzo in context with his Jesuit background, examining his work under the lens of Saint Ignatius of Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises, as well as the cultural, political, and religious climates of Rome during the Counter-Reformation era. -

1 Conventions and Institutions Benedictine Rule Monastic orders existed in Ireland and Wales in the fifth century, first arrived in England in the sixth and seventh centuries, and in the eighth century the Rule of St. Benedict (480–ca. 550), Benedict’s set of codes for behavior, also came to be known in the British Isles. Receiving additional impetus after 1066 and then again with the arrival of orders of canons and friars in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the monastic orders had their maximum numbers at the beginning of the fourteenth century, declined with the pestilence later in the century, then recovered significantly. From their inception many monastic houses received large endowments, were powerful landholding institutions, and were deeply and directly involved in the economic, legal, and social lives of all of society’s strata in both imme- diate and extended geographical areas. William Caxton (ca. 1422–92) began his career as a merchant. In the 1440s he went to Bruges, Cologne, and Ghent where he began his career as a printer and translator. He returned to England in 1476 with movable type and proceeded to publish over one hundred titles in the remaining sixteen years of this life, including several of Chaucer’s, Gower’s, Lydgate’s, and Malory’s works as well as his own translations. Six English translations of the Benedictine rule survive from the eleventh century to 1516. None of the translations is dependent on each other, nor is any direct French or Latin source known. Caxton’s edition from about 1490 also contains Heinrich Suso’s Horologium sapientiae and other texts, and it, like several manuscript versions, is addressed to both men and women. -

Reynolds, Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies During the past quarter century very few full or virtually full manuscripts written in the Beneventan script of southern Italy and Dalmatia have been discovered and reported. Most of the manuscripts reported since Lowe’s magisterial work2 on the script have been libelli, stray folios, fragments, and offsets.3 But two extraordinary full or virtually full manuscripts have recently come to light and have been reported. The first of these was put on auction a few years back by Sotheby’s in London.4 In their sale catalogue, the manuscript, described as coming from a private collection, was dated to the fifteenth century and the sale price was estimated at about GBP 4,000.
