Heinrich Suso’s Horologium sapientiae was one of the most widely read devotional books in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.1 The Horologium has survived in a large number of manuscripts, in Latin as well as in translations to all the major vernacu- lar languages of Europe. Suso’s expressive imagery, his religious ‘love language,’ and his intense visions of the suffering Christ and of the afterlife, were omnipres- ent in the religious culture of late medieval Europe. The work inspired many later authorities on spiritual life, from Ludolph of Saxony and Nicolaus of Cusa to Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit movement.2 The Horologium was especially popular in the Low Countries and religious milieus such as the Devotio moderna were clearly under susonian influence.3 Horologium sapientiae is an intense work of religious fiction. It is written by a man of unique literary talent and religious fervor. The Horologium is the product of a religious culture that that was under pressure, a culture pervaded by eschatological anticipation and religious anxiety. However, the work is also an example of how this culture produced new and innovative forms of popular theol- ogy that provided relief to pious minds. This study will argue that Suso’s ap- proaches may be seen as a pioneering effort of late medieval ‘theology of piety.’ This concept, developed by German scholars, enables appreciative and accurate analysis of certain types of theological literature from the later medieval period that does not easily answer to categories such as ‘scholastic’ or ‘mystical’ or ‘monastic’ theology. ————— 1 I prefer the ‘hybrid’ and partly latinized form Heinrich Suso.     Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

    CHAPTER SIX IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA (c.1491–1556)1 Ignatius of Loyola a theologian? On what grounds? The only book that he wrote entirely on his own was the Spiritual Exercises, hardly a work of “theology.” His correspondence, though the largest of any single person from the sixteenth century, presents problems with trying to discover in it a theology. The correspondence mainly consists of practical directives and suggestions to members of the newly founded Society of Jesus as to how they might deport themselves in the diverse and sometimes exotic situations in which they found themselves, whether in Paris, Vienna, Lisbon, Brazil, or India, whether as itinerant preachers to peasants in obscure hamlets or as founders of schools in large urban centers. Moreover, most of the extant correspondence of almost 7,000 letters dates after 1547, when Juan Alfonso de Polanco became Ignatius’s secre- tary.2 The collaboration between Ignatius and Polanco was so close that it is often difficult to know just what to attribute to Ignatius, what to Polanco. Almost the same can be said of the Jesuit Constitutions, which Ignatius agreed to draft when elected superior general of the Society a few months after its formal approval as a religious order by Pope Paul III in September 1540. Although the traditional interpretation that Ignatius himself was the principal inspiration behind the Constitutions still stands, much of the wording, arrangement, and many of the details must be attributed to Polanco. Everything was submitted to Ignatius for approval and revision, but, as in any case of such close collaboration, the problem of authorship cannot be solved by facilely assigning contents to Ignatius and form to Polanco.

    Logos: A Journal of Eastern Christian Studies Vol. 59 (2018) Nos. 1–4, pp. 263–275 The Monastic Life as Exegesis: The Hermeneutics of John Cassian in Conference 14 Thomas Deutsch Today, faith in the revelation of scripture is not a prerequi- site for becoming a successful scripture scholar. Although many contemporary scholars consider unbelief a prerequisite for analyzing and interpreting scriptures unbiasedly,1 the monk John Cassian (d. circa 435 C.E.) would see such lack of faith as detrimental to the entire process of understanding the scrip- tures. This divergence of opinion results in part because these contemporary scholars and Cassian view the end of scriptural interpretation differently. While a contemporary agnostic scholar strives in his or her exegetical work primarily for eru- dition, originality, and positive peer reception, Cassian wants to unlock the meaning of scriptures for the sake of living a life of unceasing prayer and encounter with God. 1 D.Z. Phillips describes the hermeneutical situation today in terms of a false dichotomy between a hermeneutics of recollection, which presupposes belief on the part of the interpreter in the religious texts being analyzed, and a her- meneutics of suspicion, which sees the unbelief of the interpreter as his or her greatest tool for accessing the meaning of the religious text, since the re- ligious worldview of the text hides or warps the truth of the text. As a middle position between these two extremes, Phillips offers the hermeneutic of con- templation, which allows the interpreter to accept the religious worldview of sacred texts for the purpose of interpretation without actually believing in the worldview presupposed by the text.

ISBN 0827236492. Religious educators need a vibrant spiritual life. This seems obvious but it is easy to overlook. When we think about education, we immediately think about our own schooling where we were required to regurgitate information. We do not think about deeper dimensions of formation and what this demands of the teacher. But “can we teach Christians to pray,” authors Karen-Marie Yust and E. Byron Anderson stress again and again, “if we ourselves do not know a life of prayer?” (p. 19). Taught by God is designed to address this oversight. It retrieves a rich variety of paths to Christian wisdom. In fact, a more accurate subtitle is “Spiritual Resources for Religious Educators.” Organized around a four-part exploration of teacher identity, teaching context, models, and evaluation, the book essentially reviews a series of classical texts (Luther, Kierkegaard, Julian of Norwich, John Cassian, Jane de Chantal, Francis de Sales, Anthony, John Bunyan, John Climacus, Thomas à Kempis, Benedict, Catherine of Siena, Diadochos, Ignatius, Henri Nouwen, and Simon Weil) as well as contemporary educational theorists, such as Parker Palmer and Mary Belenky. The summaries of primary texts and secondary source commentary on them makes for dry reading, a problem “easily rectified,” Yust and Anderson say, “through further reading” of the classics (p. 5). Reading this book alongside sample works would enhance its value. Unfortunately the advice of many of these figures stands at real odds with the lives of the book’s likely readers.

    A paper presented at the Pacific Rim Real Estate Conference, Melbourne, January 2005 A Christian Understanding of Property: Spiritual themes underlying Western property Garrick Small, PhD University of Technology, Sydney [email protected] Abstract: Interest in customary title has raised awareness of the cultural dependence of property and its relationship to spirituality. Western culture has a historical connection with Christian spirituality, yet its property institution is seldom related to it. Property is found within Christian thought from the very beginning of the Old Testament and shares several important commonalities with customary peoples. The notion of property is evident in the gospels along with repeated comments on the correct application of riches. Early Christianity can be viewed as a development of the Old Testament property institution consistent with other aspects of Christian moral thought. Changes in the institution of property through the Christian era can be seen to parallel changes in Christian thought eventually leading to present day property. Overall, property can be linked to the spiritual roots of Western culture in a manner that has the capacity to inform the development of dialogue with customary peoples in their endeavours to assert the validity of their property conventions. That century also saw radical changes in other human institutions. Modernity began with Machiavelli’s (d.1527) option to replace classical realism with empiricism in political science1 (Machiavelli and Mansfield 1985).
