This dissertation considers the trinitarian mystical theology of the late-medieval mystical theologian Jan van Ruusbroec and how his trinitarian thought forms and animates his written spiritual direction. It particularly examines the relationship between Ruusbroec’s trinitarian mystical theology and his post-Brussels written spiritual direction, which offers guidance to specific communities and persons in their pursuit of union with God through the life of prayer, worship, and service. In order to render a coherent account of this relationship and its primary characteristics, the work argues that one must read Ruusbroec as a mystical theologian. As a mystical theologian, Ruusbroec’s thought displays the natural integrity of theology and spirituality, as assumed by the majority of the theological masters of the Christian tradition, from its origins to the High Middle Ages. After dealing with the biographical details of Ruusbroec’s life and historical, cultural, and theological contexts, the study makes a foray into the works of Ruusbroec to show the primary characteristics of the Brabantine’s trinitarian mystical theology, the core of which is his teaching of essential love, the perfect, eternal simultaneity and harmony of activity and rest of the life of the Trinity. The study then goes on to offer interpretations of three of Ruusbroec’s most important writings of spiritual direction from his post-Brussels period. It shows that the Augustinian canon’s written spiritual direction in these writings is intricately shaped by his trinitarian mystical theology. His spiritual direction is, so to speak, harmonically related to the “firm melody” that is his trinitarian mystical theology. Finally, the study offers some possible paths forward for future research, based upon what the dissertation has found. The purpose of this work is to make a contribution to Ruusbroec scholarship that continues to illumine the shape, scope and beauty of his mystical theology as well as to contribute to the broader theological scholarship that has been, over the past five to eight decades, bringing to light the integrity of “spirituality” and “theology” within the Christian tradition. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

A second purpose was to determine whether their knowledge of poetry terms and concepts such as metaphor, and subsequent performance on the poetry sections of standardized tests improved. My nested case study focused on 19 students in a low-level 9th grade English class. As the practitioner researcher, I conducted in- depth research with six focus students chosen through purposeful sampling. I collected data over the course of three months, using the types of instruments most common to case study research. Data analysis for my nested case study was ongoing and recursive between field work and reflection. Data were coded for patterns that represented categories pertaining to my research questions and coding was refined as I gathered and re-read additional data sources. The findings revealed that students learn better, and are more engaged when they have choices (Atwell, 1998; Lauscher, 2007).

Despite the fact that seven books have thus far appeared, a review of the series may appear somewhat prema- ture, given that two more books are planned to complete the project. Nevertheless, we would like to take this opportunity to discuss McGinn’s contributions thus far, and especially from our own expertise, which is primarily in the history of mystical theology in the medieval and early modern Low Countries. Each of the volumes of The Presence of God has received almost universal praise. For example, Denys Turner, another famous scholar of medieval mysticism, commented on the fifth volume: 1. Bernard McGinn is the Naomi Shenstone Donnelley Professor Emeritus in the Divinity School at the University of Chicago, where he taught for thirty-four years (1969-2003). Trained in both theology and Medieval intellectual history, the author and/or editor of thirty-three books and well over three hundred articles; he was Editor- in-Chief of the Paulist Press Classics of Western Spirituality Series between 1988 and 2015, and has served on the editorial boards of many publications.

    Spiritual Theology By JORDAN AUMANN, O.P. Preface The present volume was written in response to numerous requests for a complete and definitive work on Christian spirituality. It is not an entirely new work, however, for some sections are taken substantially from The Theology of Christian Perfection by Antonio Royo and Jordan Aumann, published in 1962 by Priory Press. Spiritual theology is both speculative and practical, but it is eminently practical because it deals with Christian life in relation to the perfection of charity. Consequently, the study of the theology of Christian perfection should proceed scientifically and systematically, although its aim is not to produce scholars but to form holy Christians. Therefore the first part of this volume investigates the theological principles of Christian holiness; the second part deduces from those principles the general directives by which souls can be guided in their journey to the goal of the Christian life. The theology contained in this volume is based on the spiritual doctrine of three Doctors of the Church: St. Thomas Aquinas, St. John of the Cross, and St. Teresa of Avila. Moreover, it is fully in accord with the teaching of John G. Arintero and Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange.     10 INTERROGATING THE TRADITION By KENNETH LEECH N THIS ARTICLE I want to ask: what light is thrown by the christian tradition of spiritual theology, out of which the ministry of spiritual direction arose, upon the contemporary I practice of this ministry? This will involve, first, a consider- ation of the growth and changing face of contemporary practice; and, secondly, a discussion of the questions which an examination of the tradition must raise for contemporary practice, and also of the questions which are raised by the contemporary scene in its interrogation of the past. Without doubt, spiritual direction has undergone a significant process of rehabilitation in recent years. Since I wrote my study Soul friend in 1977, at a time when there was almost no contempor- ary material available, there has been a virtual epidemic of writing on the subject, particularly in the United States. 1 Nor is this resurgence of interest confined to those within the catholic tradi- tions. Experience in protestant seminaries in the United States over some ten years has shown that many seminarians, aware of the inadequacies and gaps within their own traditions, have sought help from local Jesuits and Dominicans and, indeed, from anyone who seems to be in touch with an authentic tradition concerning the interior life. One of the significant aspects of the current quest for guidance is that much of it takes place on the fringes of, or outside of, the institutional Churches. In a study of the drug culture, published fifteen years ago, I drew attention to the growing need for a ministry of spiritual direction which took account of the resurgence of forms of spirituality outside the mainstream Churches.
