They also have sought the spiritual wisdom of those who have spent time in silence and solitude. Today is no different. To face the challenges of ministry, clergy, lay leaders, missionaries, and leaders of non-profit organizations seek places of refuge to prayerfully listen and discern. Quiet Oaks, the retreat space for Come, Learn, Rest Ministries, is a place where ministry leaders escape the daily rigors of ministry and find rest for their souls in the practice of spiritual direction.

  • Interrogating the Tradition
10 INTERROGATING THE TRADITION By KENNETH LEECH N THIS ARTICLE I want to ask: what light is thrown by the christian tradition of spiritual theology, out of which the ministry of spiritual direction arose, upon the contemporary I practice of this ministry? This will involve, first, a consider- ation of the growth and changing face of contemporary practice; and, secondly, a discussion of the questions which an examination of the tradition must raise for contemporary practice, and also of the questions which are raised by the contemporary scene in its interrogation of the past. Without doubt, spiritual direction has undergone a significant process of rehabilitation in recent years. Since I wrote my study Soul friend in 1977, at a time when there was almost no contempor- ary material available, there has been a virtual epidemic of writing on the subject, particularly in the United States. 1 Nor is this resurgence of interest confined to those within the catholic tradi- tions. Experience in protestant seminaries in the United States over some ten years has shown that many seminarians, aware of the inadequacies and gaps within their own traditions, have sought help from local Jesuits and Dominicans and, indeed, from anyone who seems to be in touch with an authentic tradition concerning the interior life. One of the significant aspects of the current quest for guidance is that much of it takes place on the fringes of, or outside of, the institutional Churches. In a study of the drug culture, published fifteen years ago, I drew attention to the growing need for a ministry of spiritual direction which took account of the resurgence of forms of spirituality outside the mainstream Churches.

St Vladimir’s Th eological Quarterly 59:1 (2015) 43–53 Ignatian and Hesychast Spirituality: Praying Together Tim Noble Some time aft er his work with St Makarios of Corinth (1731–1805) on the compilation of the Philokalia,1 St Nikodimos of the Holy Mountain (1748–1809) worked on a translation of an expanded version of the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius Loyola.2 Metropolitan Kallistos Ware has plausibly suggested that the translation may have been motivated by Nikodimos’ intuition that there was something else needed to complement the hesychast tradition, even if only for those whose spiritual mastery was insuffi cient to deal with its demands.3 My interest in this article is to look at the encounters between the hesychast and Ignatian traditions. Clearly, when Nikodimos read Pinamonti’s version of Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises, he found in it something that was reconcilable with his own hesychast practice. What are these elements of agreement and how can two apparently quite distinct traditions be placed side by side? I begin my response with a brief introduction to the two traditions. I will also suggest that spiritual traditions off er the chance for experience to meet experience. Moreover, this experience is in principle available to all, though in practice the benefi ciaries will always be relatively few in number. I then look in more detail at some features of the hesychast 1 See Kallistos Ware, “St Nikodimos and the Philokalia,” in Brock Bingaman & Bradley Nassif (eds.), Th e Philokalia: A Classic Text of Orthodox Spirituality (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2012), 9–35, at 15.

Questions About Spiritual Direction | Care of the Soul http://www.careofthesoul.org/faqs/ Care of the Soul Spiritual Direction in the Jungian Tradition ~ Wake Up to Mystery & Discover Your Unique Path A Spiritual Direction Practice Located in North Texas Questions About Spiritual Direction I’m new to Spiritual Direction. Help me to better understand what it is. Spiritual Direction is an ancient term used to describe what is, in reality, a relationship of Spiritual Companionship. It is an exploration of a deeper relationship with the spiritual aspect of being human. Simply put, I help people tell their sacred stories everyday. It is a practice grounded in contemplation and is a spiritual practice which helps another person or group awaken to the mystery called God in all of life. Spiritual direction helps us learn how to live in peace, with compassion, promoting justice, as humble servants of that which lies beyond all names. How long does a spiritual direction relationship last? It lasts as long as you want it to last. For some people, spiritual direction is for a season, during a time of discernment or transition such as a re-examination of one’s vocation or a time of mourning following a death or other significant loss. I’ve found that for most of us, it is part of our on-going practice of self-care, and especially for those of us who follow a spiritual path. It offers support for own relationship with the Holy Mystery or God, whatever our experience is of the Mystery that is both beyond us and as close as the air we breathe.

  • Spiritual Direction by Thomas Merton
Spiritual Direction By Thomas Merton On June 21, 1961, Thomas Merton wrote to his friend and former Columbia professor Mark Van Doren, “I am not writing much at the moment and not intending to write much except for doing chores like an Encyclopedia article (New Catholic Encyclopedia, which will probably be stuffy).”1 In his journal eight days later, he provides more information on the “chore”: “New Cath. Encycl. has repeated its request for one article. I am convinced they do it very unwillingly, merely to get my name on their list. I refused before a ludicrous request to do 300 words on Dom Edmond Obrecht (!!) and now they have asked for 5,000 on spiritual direction and I feel utterly foul for having ac- cepted.”2 On June 2, 1961, Msgr. William McDonald, Editor-in-Chief of the encyclopedia project, had written to “Reverend and dear Brother Louis” to “again extend to you an invitation to write for The New Catholic Encyclopedia” and had enclosed a Contributor’s Assignment form specifying the topic: “DIRECTION, SPIRITUAL Nature, object, relation to guidance, counseling, psychotherapy; history; necessity; the director (qualities, choice of, role); the one directed (manifestation of con- science, docility, discretion); methods and forms; special problems and classes.”3 Presumably the topic was suggested because Merton had recently published his little book Spiritual Direction and Meditation.4 No more is heard about the project until September 19, when he writes to his friend Sr. Thérèse Lentfoehr, “I have had to write a few articles for a new Catholic Youth Encyclopedia which, between you and me and the gatepost, sounds rather useless.

  • Bibliography on Spiritual Formation Bernard of Clairvaux. the Love of God. Portland, OR
Bibliography On Spiritual Formation Bernard of Clairvaux. The Love Of God. Portland, OR: Multnomah, 1983. This work includes the eleventh-century monk’s classic presentation on the nature of divine love and the importance of loving God in life. His outline of the four degrees of love, which is part of this treatise, is now widely known and seen as insightful and foundational to mystical literature. Bonaventure, The Soul’s Journey into God; The Tree of Life; and The Life of Saint Francis. New York: Paulist Press, 1978. These three works, found in this one volume, are seen as the heart of Bonaventure’s literary contribution to mystical literature. The Soul’s Journey Into God contains his understanding of the stages of contemplation as reflected in the created world. The Tree of Life is a meditation on the person of Christ as seen in the gospel accounts, portraying the beauty and wonder of the Lord, who alone is worthy of devotion. The Life of Saint Francis was the official biography commissioned by the Franciscan Order in the mid- thirteenth century. Bonhoeffer, Dietrich. Life Together. New York: Harper and Row, 1954. This is a treatment on true Christian community, made possible by the grace of Christ. The author argues that being in right relationship with others is only possible through the work of Christ. Christians, according to Bonhoeffer, are a gathering of imperfect people sustained in unity through the grace and mercy of the Lord. 2 Brother Lawrence. The Practice of the Presence of God. New York: Doubleday, 1977. Brother Lawrence was a very common man who knew the way to experience a very uncommon walk with God.

This dissertation examined what characterized her reception and practice of spiritual direction through an analysis of her letters, journals, meditations, her translations and works she copied.
