MOSE (EXPERIMENTAL ELECTROMECHANICAL MODULE; ITALIAN: MODULO SPERIMENTALE ELETTROMECCANICO) Overview / summary of the initiative Title: MoSE (Experimental Electromechanical Module; Italian: MOdulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico) Country: Italy (Veneto region) Thematic area: Security, Climate change Objective(s): 1. To protect from flooding the city of Venice and the Venetian Lagoon, with its towns, villages and inhabitants along with its iconic historic, artistic and environmental heritage. 2. To contribute to the socio-economic growth of the area and hence to the development of the port and related activities. 3. To guarantee the existing and future port activities inside the Lagoon in its various specificities of Chioggia, Cavallino and Venice. Timeline: The launch of the project started in 1973, when for the first time the Italian Government took in consideration the realisation of mechanic structures to prevent Venice from flooding. 2003 (start of the works)-2019 (estimation) Scale of the initiative: EUR 5.493 million (2014 estimation) Scope of the initiative • Focused on new knowledge creation (basic research, TRLs 1-4): TO A CERTAIN EXTENT; the development and following implementation of the MoSE project have focused on knowledge creation and prototypes development since the 1980s. However, this is useful to the construction at the three inlets of the Venice lagoon and mobile barriers. • Focused on knowledge application (applied research, TRLs 5-9): YES; the MoSE project aims to apply the developed technological solutions and to demonstrate its validity. This paper shows how much citizens’ views are taken into account in local policy decision-making con- cerning the management of the coastal area of the Venice Lagoon. Through the application of a somewhat innovative version of the contingent valuation method (CVM), it is possible to understand how to set a good balance among economic development, the social dimension and environmental protection in a coastal zone. The methodology allows for a clear assessment of the economic value of non-use values. In 2010, an online survey was conducted in the Venice area to find out how local much citizens value two protected areas in the Venice Lagoon. Four hypotheses were tested to find out whether the age of respon- dents, the municipality where they live, their income level, and the visited and protected sites are factors determining a different willingness to pay for environmental protection. -

Giambattista Tiepolo è certamente uno degli artisti più rilevanti del XVIII secolo; con questo studio vogliamo andare ad analizzare i suoi soffitti a tema sacro. L’artista veneziano è indiscutibilmente uno degli affrescatori più bravi del panorama artistico di quegli anni. Nella prima parte della tesi, cercheremo di catalogare le opere a soffitto dell’artista, provando anche a differenziare gli affreschi unitari da quelli a partizione; ci soffermeremo inoltre con maggiore interesse sul soffitto distrutto durante la prima guerra mondiale della Chiesa dei Carmelitani Scalzi, per infine cercare delle differenze o delle analogie con i cieli a tema profano. Nella seconda parte andremo a confrontare le opere di Tiepolo, con quelle di altri quattro artisti: Antonio Zanchi, Luca Giordano, Sebastiano Ricci e Giovanni Battista Piazzetta. -

GHIA Spring 2010 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in Journalism with honors in Journalism Reviewed and approved by Russell Frank Associate Professor Honors Adviser Thesis Supervisor Russ Eshleman Senior Lecturer Second Faculty Reader ABSTRACT At the beginning of the 2000s, three factories in Asti, a small Italian town, went broke and closed in quick succession. Hundreds of men were laid off. After some time, an investigation mounted by local prosecutors began to reveal what led to bankruptcy. A group of Italian and Spanish entrepreneurs organized a scheme to fraudulently bankrupt their own factories. Globalization made production more profitable where manpower and machinery are cheaper. A well-planned fraudulent bankruptcy would kill three birds with one stone: disposing of non- competitive facilities, fleecing creditors and sidestepping Italian labor laws. These managers hired a former labor union leader, Silvano Sordi, who is also a notorious “fixer.” According to the prosecutors, Sordi bribed prominent labor union leaders of the CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labor), the major Italian labor union. My investigation shows that smaller, local scandals were part of a larger scheme that led to the divestments of relevant sectors of the Italian industry. Sordi also played a key role in many shady businesses – varying from awarding bogus university degrees to toxic waste trafficking. My research unveils an expanded, loose network that highlights the multiple connections between political, economic and criminal forces in the Italian system.
