  • Apple-Producing Family Farms in South Tyrol: an Agriculture Innovation Case Study
OCCASIONAL PAPERS ON INNOVATION IN FAMILY FARMING Apple production in South Tyrol is a true illustration of a vibrant agricultural innovation system. It is a collaborative and pluralistic structure that comprises private and public actors, different tiers of producer organizations, cooperatives, research, extension and advisory services, all geared towards integrating small-scale apple producers in a highly productive, profitable and efficient system. Today, apple production is a main family farming activity in South Tyrol, practised on a total area of 19 000 ha with an average landholding of 2.5 ha. Up to 95% of the farmers are members of cooperatives. Over 8 000 small-scale producers have joined together in cooperatives that are clustered to form two main producer organizations. Small farmers in South Tyrol currently produce 50%, 15% and 2% of apples on the Italian, European and global markets respectively. APPLE-PRODUCING The cooperative culture, the diversity of services, the multiple actors and their changing roles within the system offer a good opportunity for learning about the dynamics of FAMILY FARMS IN SOUTH TYROL: agricultural innovation. This paper presents the evolution of this agricultural innovation system, and analyses the triggers and the drivers of innovation in the apple production AN AGRICULTURE INNOVATION sector in South Tyrol. • The North-South Divide in Italy: Reality Or Perception?
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk EUROPEAN SPATIAL RESEARCH AND POLICY Volume 25 2018 Number 1 http://dx.doi.org/10.18778/1231-1952.25.1.03 Dario MUSOLINO∗ THE NORTH-SOUTH DIVIDE IN ITALY: REALITY OR PERCEPTION? Abstract. Although the literature about the objective socio-economic characteristics of the Italian North- South divide is wide and exhaustive, the question of how it is perceived is much less investigated and studied. Moreover, the consistency between the reality and the perception of the North-South divide is completely unexplored. The paper presents and discusses some relevant analyses on this issue, using the findings of a research study on the stated locational preferences of entrepreneurs in Italy. Its ultimate aim, therefore, is to suggest a new approach to the analysis of the macro-regional development gaps. What emerges from these analyses is that the perception of the North-South divide is not consistent with its objective economic characteristics. One of these inconsistencies concerns the width of the ‘per- ception gap’, which is bigger than the ‘reality gap’. Another inconsistency concerns how entrepreneurs perceive in their mental maps regions and provinces in Northern and Southern Italy. The impression is that Italian entrepreneurs have a stereotyped, much too negative, image of Southern Italy, almost a ‘wall in the head’, as also can be observed in the German case (with respect to the East-West divide). Keywords: North-South divide, stated locational preferences, perception, image. 1. INTRODUCTION The North-South divide1 is probably the most known and most persistent charac- teristic of the Italian economic geography.

The luminous limestone range is the result of geological transformation from ancient sea floor to mountaintop. The region is a landscape of grassy balconies perched above Alpine lakes, and Tyrolean hamlets nestled in lush valleys, crisscrossed by countless hiking and walking trails connecting villages, Alpine refuges, and cable cars. The Dolomites form the frontier between Germanic Northern Europe and the Latin South.

Carlo G Ferretti, Adv Crop Sci Tech 2019, Volume: 07 conferenceseries.com 3rd Annual Congress on Soil, Plant and Water Sciences November 11-12, 2019 | Madrid, Spain Geopedology an ecological resource in agriculture: The case of the Alto Adige DOC wine region in Italy Carlo G Ferretti Geo Identity Research (GIR), Italy he combination of several natural component such as geography, climate, vine variety together with local cultures and winemakers, influences the wines qualities around the world. Mainly geology, geomorphology and Tmicroclimate are geographical features that can be intended as natural ecological resources of the territory. These influence the plants’ biosynthetic activities and promote biodiversity and qualitative predisposition of either the vine grape and wine. Statement of the Problem: Alto Adige DOC is one of the smallest winegrowing regions in Italy (<1%), but thanks to its geographical location in the middle of the Alps, it is also one of the most multifaceted. A wide variety that brings forth a considerable dense concentration of different top wines: three on Italy’s top awarded 15 in 2019. A specific investigation of the territorial conditions was required to give details on the singular environmental circumstances that favor this case. New methods of analysis and classification of the territory at vineyards scale are purposed. Findings: New approaches for applied research and decision-making in the sector of viticulture related to the mountain territory and the global warming phenomenon. The new concept of the ‘Vineyards geopedological Identity’ has been introduced. Innovative scientific approach to territorial data to support and share the value of territory on agricultural products.

Experiences SOUTH TYROL t’s winter. It’s raining. It’s miserable. Time to hit the mountains, then. After a 20-year hiatus from the white stuff, I’ve recently enjoyed something of a skiing renaissance thanks to an enthusiastic ski instructor girlfriend Iand some opportune mountain jollies. But while I love the luxury of Austria’s finest resorts, the hedonism of the French Alps at their Gallic best and the open, empty slopes of Scandinavia, I was in search of something quick, easy and a little different. Pointed in the direction of Italy by some knowledgeable friends, we soon found ourselves heading out of Innsbruck Airport on a spectacular two-hour trundle through the idyllic Dolomites towards the curious South Tyrolean region that straddles the Italian-Austrian border. First stop is snow-capped Alta Badia and the grand old dame Rosa Alpina hotel. This is proper old world mountain stuff: roaring fires, well-worn furniture and a patina of grandiosity impossible to mimic in a modern build. Rooms are oddly shaped and quirky; impossibly warm and inviting, glamorous even, in a timeless but faded way. Gerald Steinacher* Fascist Legacies:1 Th e Controversy over Mussolini’s Monuments in South Tyrol2 Th e northern Italian town of Bolzano (Bozen in German) in the western Dolomites is known for breathtaking natural landscapes as well as for its medieval city centre, gothic cathedral, and world-famous mummy, Ötzi the Iceman, which is on dis- play at the local archaeological museum. At the same time, Bolzano’s more recent history casts a shadow over the town. Th e legacy of fascism looms large in the form of Ventennio fascista-era monuments such as the Victory Monument, a mas- sive triumphal arch commissioned by the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and located in Bolzano’s Victory Square, and the Mussolini relief on the façade of the former Fascist Party headquarters (now a tax offi ce) at Courthouse Square, which depicts il duce riding a horse with his arm raised high in the Fascist salute.
