CENTRAL AMERICAN PROVINCIALISM AND THE GREAT AMERICAN BIOTIC INTERCHANGE Michael O. Woodburne1,* Alberto L. Cione2,**, and Eduardo P. Tonni2,*** ABSTRACT The age and phyletic context of mammals that dispersed between North and South America during the past 9 m.y. is summarized. The presence of a Central American province of cladogenesis and faunal differentiation is explored. One apparent aspect of such a province is to delay dispersals of some taxa northward from Mexico into the continental United States, largely during the Blancan. Examples are recognized among the various xenar- thrans, and cervid artiodactyls. Whereas the concept of a Central American province has been mentioned in past investigations it is upgraded here. Paratoceras (protoceratid artio- dactyl) and rhynchotheriine proboscideans provide perhaps the most compelling examples of Central American cladogenesis (late Arikareean to early Barstovian and Hemphillian to Rancholabrean, respectively), but this category includes Hemphillian sigmodontine rodents, and perhaps a variety of carnivores and ungulates from Honduras in the medial Miocene, as well as peccaries and equids from Mexico. For South America, Mexican canids and hy- drochoerid rodents may have had an earlier development in Mexico. Remarkably, the first South American immigrants to Mexico (after the Miocene heralds; the xenarthrans Plaina and Glossotherium) apparently dispersed northward at the same time as the first Holarctic taxa dispersed to South America (sigmodontine rodents and the tayassuid artiodactyls). -

Ernesto Blanco2,* 1Museo Nacional de Historia Natural y Antropologı´a, Montevideo 11300, Uruguay 2Facultad de Ingenierı´a, Instituto de Fı´sica, Julio Herrera y Reissig 565, Montevideo 11300, Uruguay The discovery of an exceptionally well-preserved skull permits the description of the new South American fossil species of the rodent, Josephoartigasia monesi sp. nov. (family: Dinomyidae; Rodentia: Hystricognathi: Caviomorpha). This species with estimated body mass of nearly 1000 kg is the largest yet recorded. The skull sheds new light on the anatomy of the extinct giant rodents of the Dinomyidae, which are known mostly from isolated teeth and incomplete mandible remains. The fossil derives from San Jose´ Formation, Uruguay, usually assigned to the Pliocene–Pleistocene (4–2 Myr ago), and the proposed palaeoenviron- ment where this rodent lived was characterized as an estuarine or deltaic system with forest communities. Canington, B.A., The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Learning Objectives • Understand the major trends in primate evolution from the origin of primates to the origin of our own species • Learn about primate adaptations and how they characterize major primate groups • Discuss the kinds of evidence that anthropologists use to find out how extinct primates are related to each other and to living primates • Recognize how the changing geography and climate of Earth have influenced where and when primates have thrived or gone extinct The first fifty million years of primate evolution was a series of adaptive radiations leading to the diversification of the earliest lemurs, monkeys, and apes. The primate story begins in the canopy and understory of conifer-dominated forests, with our small, furtive ancestors subsisting at night, beneath the notice of day-active dinosaurs. From the archaic plesiadapiforms (archaic primates) to the earliest groups of true primates (euprimates), the origin of our own order is characterized by the struggle for new food sources and microhabitats in the arboreal setting. Climate change forced major extinctions as the northern continents became increasingly dry, cold, and seasonal and as tropical rainforests gave way to deciduous forests, woodlands, and eventually grasslands. Lemurs, lorises, and tarsiers—once diverse groups containing many species—became rare, except for lemurs in Madagascar where there were no anthropoid competitors and perhaps few predators. Meanwhile, anthropoids (monkeys and apes) emerged in the Old World, then dispersed across parts of the northern hemisphere, Africa, and ultimately South America. -

When these new data are incorporated into an ancestral state reconstruction, they MicroCT support the conclusion that pterion frontal-alisphenoid contact characterized the last common ancestor of crown anthropoids and that contact between the parietal and zygomatic is a synapomorphy of Platyrrhini. -

Sistemática, Evolución y Biogeografía Diego Brandoni Director: Gustavo J. Scillato-Yané 2006 Resumen El objetivo de la presente Tesis Doctoral es realizar un estudio sistemático, filogenético y biogeográfico de los Megatheriinae registrados en el Terciario de la República Argentina. En la Argentina, la subfamilia Megatheriinae se registra desde el Colloncurense (Mioceno medio) de Patagonia, hasta el Lujanense (Pleistoceno tardío-Holoceno temprano) estando representada fundamentalmente por Megatherium americanum Cuvier, 1796, de amplia distribución en nuestro territorio. A pesar de la realización de varios trabajos recientes (e. g. Carlini et al., 2002; De Iuliis et al., 2004), los Megatheriinae terciarios (Mioceno medio-Plioceno) ofrecen un campo en buena parte inexplorado. Es evidente la existencia de una gran incertidumbre acerca de la validez de los taxones originalmente descritos, su caracterización anatómica y las relaciones filogenéticas entre éstos. Los megaterinos están bien representados en el registro paleontológico argentino, fundamentalmente en lo que respecta a taxones cuaternarios (i. e. Megatherium), pero medianamente en cuanto a aquéllos terciarios. -

Santiago R oth Mariano Bond (*) Santiago Roth nacido en Suiza en 1850, llega a la Argentina acompañando a su familia, a la edad de dieciséis años. En nuestro país se dedica a la bús queda y venta de distintos objetos de historia natural, especialmente de grandes mamíferos fósiles del Cuaternario. Aunque básicamente autodidacto, a lo largo de su vida incrementa sus conocimientos sobre las ciencias de la tierra y llega a ser considerado como uno de los más hábiles colectores de fósiles. Sus méritos, apreciados por Francisco P. Moreno, determinan su incorporación al Museo en 1895, como Jefe de la Sección Paleontología. En tal carácter y como integrante de las distintas comisiones de exploración durante los conflictos limítrofes, llevó a cabo una labor muy prolífica en observaciones geológicas y descubrimiento de vertebrados fósiles. Fue el primer profesor de paleontología en aquella institución y uno de los pioneros del Museo de La Plata.
