Her final performance seems to have been Leonora in Il Trovatore at Milan’s Teatro dal Verme. See: ALESSANDRO BONCI. ESTHER PALLISER (or PALLISSER) [s]. Germantown, PA, 1872 - ? , She was taught by her musician parents and then studied further in Europe. Her operatic debut was in Rouen as Marguerite in Faust. This was followed by work with the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1890. Her career included other Gilbert and Sullivan performances and tours, concerts, music festivals and grand opera at Covent Garden and Drury Lane. An appearance at the July, 1916 San Diego Panama-California Exposition indicates that she was active at least through this period, but as to her subsequent career and life nothing seems to be known. 1118. 10” Blk. One source gives his debut in 1908 at the Teatro San Carlo as the Sailor in Tristan und Isolde, a performance directed by Cleofante Campanini. If his debut and birthdate are correct, this would have made him 18 at the time. His repertoire, mostly comprimario roles, included well over 100 parts. Most of his operatic career was at the Teatro San Carlo, from which he retired in 1963. He was also a famous interpreter of Canzone Napoletana, and he made many records in this genre. Paterna was one of his era’s most prominent buffo basses, and at the Met his roles included Bartolo in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Dulcamara in l’Elisir d’Amore, Don Pasquale, and several smaller parts. • Karel Burian – the Guest of Budapest (1913–1924)
100 Ferenc János Szabó Institute of Musicology, Research Centre for the Humanities Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest Karel Burian – the Guest of Budapest (1913–1924) Abstract | In the present article the last third of Karel Burian’s career is discussed, not only because it is perhaps a less known period of Burian’s biography, but also because it is close- ly connected with Hungarian culture. In these years he appeared in Budapest as a regular guest of the Royal Hungarian Opera mainly as a Wagner singer but also in French, Italian and Hungarian operas, and celebrated his thirty-year jubilee as an opera singer also in Bu- dapest. After a chronological overview, certain special aspects of Burian’s Hungarian activity are examined, e. g. his Hungarian naturalization (the so called ‘Hungarian divorce’) and the political context of his appearances at the end of the First World War. Keywords | Karel Burian – First World War – Hungarian divorce – Hungary – Naturalization – Opera, Scandals – Richard Wagner 1 Introduction1 Even today, the name of the Czech Heldentenor Karel Burian sounds familiar not only in his na- tive land, but also among the opera lovers in Hungary. Despite the fact that it was required to sing in Hungarian on the stage of the Royal Hungarian Opera, the most successful Wagner tenor of the fi rst quarter of the 20th century in Budapest was a foreign singer: Karel Burian. In the present article I discuss the last ten years of his career, not only because it is perhaps a less known period of Burian’s biography, but also because it is closely connected with Hungarian musical culture.

  • Messa Per Rossini

  • The Mysterious Affair of the Serenade
THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR OF THE SERENADE The time has come for the revaluation of Aldo Finzi, a Jewish composer who was on the point of winning, with his “playful comedy” when the anti-Jewish laws were about to be issued in Italy, the competition for a new opera which the La Scala Theatre had published. Aldo Finzi’s “Serenade to the Wind”, an injustice to be repaired. “ ... go, serenade to the wind, but don’t reveal that your singing - hides a secret longing - for a weeping moment - of an intimate torment...” On 11th February 1936 Wolf Ferrari’s “Il campiello”was staged at the Scala Theatre , conducted by Gino Marinuzzi with an all star cast: Mafalda Favero, Margherita Carosio, Iris Adami- Corradetti, Giuseppe Nessi, the very colourful and sunny only scene by Pieretto Bianchi. It can still be admired in the nowadays impossible to find volume that La Scala caused to be published in 1946 (1). Just seven years before, Toscanini had conducted, in addition to Fidelio, also Falstaff and Meistersingers in what was going to be his last Scala season before World War II (2). In December of the same year, on Bronislaw Hubermann’s invitation, he went to Palestine ( Jerusalem and Tel Aviv) to conduct the first Israeli orchestra and he was so impressed by the new life of the country he was visiting that he stated: “Here in Palestine I have found the country where I can be only Man as I conceive him” (3). These were the times and the place where a Jewish composer, on the eve of those anti-Jewish laws that were to alter radically the landscape of Italian music, was about to set to music a libretto by Carlo Veneziani, a “comedy of manners” racy and romantic, spicy and amusing, in which graceful satire and tart repartees combined to create the kind of wit which, to quote Falstaff,” creates wit in others”.
