Modina, 1902-1935. A pupil of Vezzani and Boninsegna, Pagliarini made her debut in 1921 as Nedda in Pagliacci and retired in 1930 after marrying conductor Antonio Fugazzola. Her final performance seems to have been Leonora in Il Trovatore at Milan’s Teatro dal Verme. See: ALESSANDRO BONCI. ESTHER PALLISER (or PALLISSER) [s]. Germantown, PA, 1872 - ? , She was taught by her musician parents and then studied further in Europe. Her operatic debut was in Rouen as Marguerite in Faust. This was followed by work with the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1890. Her career included other Gilbert and Sullivan performances and tours, concerts, music festivals and grand opera at Covent Garden and Drury Lane. An appearance at the July, 1916 San Diego Panama-California Exposition indicates that she was active at least through this period, but as to her subsequent career and life nothing seems to be known. 1118. 10” Blk. One source gives his debut in 1908 at the Teatro San Carlo as the Sailor in Tristan und Isolde, a performance directed by Cleofante Campanini. If his debut and birthdate are correct, this would have made him 18 at the time. His repertoire, mostly comprimario roles, included well over 100 parts. Most of his operatic career was at the Teatro San Carlo, from which he retired in 1963. He was also a famous interpreter of Canzone Napoletana, and he made many records in this genre. Aside from appearing with many Italian companies, Paterna was also heard in Lisbon (1890), the Metropolitan Opera (season of 1908-09), Covent Garden (1920), and Madrid’s Teatro Reale (1915). Paterna was one of his era’s most prominent buffo basses, and at the Met his roles included Bartolo in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Dulcamara in l’Elisir d’Amore, Don Pasquale, and several smaller parts. His lengthy career concluded in 1938 but included only five recorded sides (for Fonotipia in 1910). -Roberto Marcocci. 1015. 11” Fonotipia 92769/92770 [XPh4446/XPh4447].
