Cities are perishing because this availability is disappearing; travel distance is getting greater and greater between the center of the megalopolis and the oversized suburbs. The advantages of city life are compromized by an increasing lack of comfort. Noise and traffic problems are such sources of trouble that people move into the suburbs and go further into the countryside to get a second residence, if their money allows this, not because they prefer the suburbs but because they are disgusted of the life in the cities. Cities do not fulfill their functions anymore, at least their complete functions. This explainz the big migrations during the week-ends and vacations, the increasing success of camping, and the return to a more natural life. Nevertheless, in building new cities, once one is aware of all these problems, it becomes possible through the integrated designs to find solutions to urban problems, such as a convenient transpor- tation system to name one of them. In design if one starts to eliminate the main sources of troubles that are known from the ex- periences of old cities, the first part of the struggle is won. The first problems that touch the functions of the towns are: how to get quickly from one place to another, that is, how to go to work, how to find parking places, how to get to the countryside, how to take the children to school, and so forth. This is not an easy problem to solve because the city is complex, and one has to 2 allow for different modes of movements through the city. If it is true that segregation between the different kinds of traffic is highly desirable in the measure of the possible, it is also true that the pedestrian movement problem is the most difficult to solve. First it has to be adapted to the speed and the visual quality of the city to a much greater extent than all the mecha- nized systems. Secondly, people are lazy by nature, or, let us say that they are less inclined to profit by a sidewalk if they have their cars and if the distance is too great. A very high density city can solve this problem in the space of one square mile, by reducing the travel distance across the city to about twenty minutes on foot. That means too that, from any points of the city, the maximum time to walk to the center is ten minutes. This condition of pedestrian movement system must be fulfilled as a first step to solve the transportation system if one does not want the people to use their car in the city. Still, this is a minimum solution. There is no point in going from one place to another and spending ten minutes on foot if there are other means of transportation linking the two places. We must provide, within the ten minutes walking distance enough activities to awake the interest and to try to justify the walking experience. We have to propose different circular patterns for pedestri- an movements even if the way is longer, these circular systems have more potential at bringing interest to the pedestrians since they are, by their curiosity, confronted by other environments, other uses, other urban landscapes. These traffic problems are so important because of the fact that they are common for everyone; 3 other problems, in one sense, are much more individual problems. If pedestrian and highway systems are supposed to be essentially functional, there is no doubt that they are strongly influenced by the direct invironment. By now, everyone agrees that isolated buildings, blocks,... are not consonant with the pedestrian's desires to invent his own trip through the city by crossing much more integrated urban environments. Actually, since technology is continually giving us new structural systems, materials, ... we should be wrong to refuse them. These systems make possible to give a tridimensional space to the cities. This is surely a highly privileged time in the history of architecture when we are allowed at last to make tri- dimensional what was before bidimensional. Unfortunately, as all new experiments, they must pass by a period of adaptation. At the moment, new cities based on tridimensional systems are too ex- pensive in terms of structures. Nonetheless, what is proposed here is a system in which tridimensional structure occurs, but in a very limited span. This makes possible to give a new environment without increasing too much the cost. It is, in the same time, an attempt to provide a new visual experience into the city. On the one hand, if transportation and environment are common for everyone, on the other hand, housing reflects a much more individual problem (financial, educational .... A trial to as- similate the ten per cent of the population considered as poor, was made in the design policies. On the edges of the clusters, low and medium densities generally occur. These could be built in a very cheap and economical way. For other people, other solutions were thought as they were proposed in the drawings. Rich people support the experiments; these experiments let us foresee the future in the field of housing problems. Introduction of the "ephemeral object in architecture." We are already in the second generation of the ephemeral object.

WEAVER, Administrator, Housing and Home Finance Agency •WRITING IN the New York Times, Columnist James Reston recently noted that, "In a fit of exuberance or absentmindedness we have increased the population of the United States by over 50 million since 1945." As we all know, the exuberance and absentmindedness of which Reston spoke is con­ tinuing, and at such a pace that by the time the children of the past 15 years are grand­ parents, there will be another 125 million or so Americans. Morever, at least 85 per­ cent of the 300 million people in the nation will be living in urban places by the year 2000. This growth is the most portentous single fact of our time-always excepting the thermonuclear threat. It means that in the next 40 years we will have to build as much housing, industry, highways and related development as we have built in our previous history. And it means, moreover, that the amount of land consumed by urbanization will be at least double the acreage now urbanized. This tremendous population surge will be accommodated largely in what we today consider the metropolitan fringe, and, in many cases, in undeveloped or argricultural lands even farther out. By 2000, Megalopolis will be a fact, certainly the fast-growing East Coast "super-city" stretching from Boston to Richmond and the West Coast area b etween San Francisco and San Diego will appear, in another 40 years, as continuous urbanized places. The previous 40 years of metropolitan growth has produced a phenomenon variously know as "Spread City," "urban sprawl" and "slurbs." In other words, much of our suburban development heretofore has been a mess.

At mid-century, seers envisioned a clean, rationally planned city of the future, free of long-standing problems such as traffic and poverty. The reality is more complex. We built a new metropolis that addressed some major problems while simultaneously creating a host of new ones. The next 50 years will undoubted- ly contain similar surprises. In conjunction with the 1999 Annual Housing Conference, which looked at the legacy of the 1949 Housing Act, the Fannie Mae Foundation commissioned a survey that asked urban scholars to rank the key influences shaping the past and future American metropolis. The “top 10” lists that resulted are the focus of this article. Keywords: Demographics; Development/revitalization; Policy Methods The top 10 lists are the result of a two-stage process. First, a group of urban specialists met to offer their ideas on what items should be included on preliminary unranked lists of influences. We analyse their varying stages of demographic development and the implications their expansion will have for several core sectors. The rise and decline of great cities past was largely based on their ability to draw the ambitious and the restless from other places. China’s cities are on the rise. Their growth has been fuelled both by the large-scale internal migration of those seeking better lives and by government initiatives encouraging the expansion of urban areas. The government hopes that the swelling urban populace will spend more in a more highly concentrated retail environment, thereby helping to rebalance the Chinese economy towards private consumption. Progress has been rapid. The country’s urbanisation rate surpassed 50% for the first time in 2011, up from a little over one-third just ten years earlier. Even though the growth of China’s total population will soon slow to a near standstill, the urban population is expected to continue expanding for at least another decade. China’s cities will continue to grow. Some cities have grown more rapidly than others. The metropolitan population of the southern city of Shenzhen, China’s poster child for the liberal economic reforms of the past 30 years, has nearly doubled since 2000. However, development has also spread through more of the country, and today the fastest-growing cities are no longer all on the eastern seaboard.

    URBAN AREA TYPES OF URBAN AREA • An urban area is the region surrounding a city. Most inhabitants of urban areas have non-agricultural jobs. Urban areas are very developed, meaning there is a density of human structures such as houses, commercial buildings, roads, bridges, and railways. • "Urban area" can refer to towns, cities, and suburbs. An urban area includes the city itself, as well as the surrounding areas. Many urban areas are called metropolitan areas, or "greater," as in Greater New York or Greater London. • An urban area is a human settlement with high population density and infrastructure of built environment. Urban areas are created through urbanization and are categorized by urban morphology as cities, towns, conurbations or suburbs. • In urbanism, the term contrasts to rural areas such as villages and hamlets and in urban sociology or urban anthropology it contrasts with natural environment. • The creation of early predecessors of urban areas during the urban revolution led to the creation of human civilization with modern urban planning, which along with other human activities such as exploitation of natural resources leads to human impact on the environment. • The world's urban population in 1950 of just 746 million has increased to 3.9 billion in the decades since. • In 2009, the number of people living in urban areas (3.42 billion) surpassed the number living in rural areas (3.41 billion) and since then the world has become more urban than rural. • This was the first time that the majority of the world's population lived in a city. • In 2014 there were 7.2 billion people living on the planet, of which the global urban population comprised 3.9 billion.

The paper explores the relationship between metropolitan form, scale, and connectivity. It revisits the idea first offered by geographers Jean Gottmann, James Vance, and Jerome Pickard that urban expansiveness does not tear regions apart but instead leads to new types of linkages. The paper begins with an historical review of the evolving American metropolis and introduces a new spatial model showing changing metropolitan morphology. Next is an analytic synthesis based on geographic theory and empirical findings of what is labelled here the ‘new metropolis’. A key element of the new metropolis is its vast scale, which facilitates the emergence of an even larger trans-metropolitan urban structure – the ‘megapolitan region’. Megapolitan geography is described and includes a typology to show variation between regions. The paper concludes with the suggestion that the fragmented post-modern metropolis may be giving way to a neo-modern extended region where new forms of networks and spatial connectivity reintegrate urban space.
