America. Herr Klebs's examination of the amber 5[ollusea produced a similar result, and in this case Eastern Asiatic typ~s were also found. There is, however, nothin:g at all sur- prising in this--it was only to be expected ; for relations have long been known to exist between the fauna and flora of North America and Eastern Asia on the one hand and bet~veen this and our Central European Tertia,T fauna and flora on theother. Herr Klebs instances the tuberculated Uaios, the Palutina~, &e. Still more striking would be this agreement if the at present merely provisional assignment of the above-mentioned lizard to the immediate neighbourhoocl of K~emidophorus should be confirmed upon closer examination. The works of Caspary and Conwenz on the flora of amber also lead m~tinly to the same result. Herr Klebs concludes by remarking that, with the excep- tion of the Psoeidm and Gasteropoda, some fifty specimens in all, no portion of the amber fauna has as yet been exhaustively worked out; and he appeals to entomological specialists in articular to put themselves in communication with him, in P • , . order that the study of the rich matertal whtch he has amassed may be undertaken in a manner befitting its importance. SINCE the publication o[ the first part of my " Report" oil th~ fossil fishes obtained by the Geological Survey of Scotland in Eskdale and Liddesdale a considerable quantity of new mate- rial has been collected in this district, as well by the Sm'vey as also by Mr. Jex, collector to Mr. Damon, of Weymouth, and by Mr. T. Stock and others. Edinb. 1889-90, pp. 397, 398, I have given my reasons for referring the original Rhadinichthys Geikiei to Rh. earinatus, Ag., and also for believing that the Eskdale fish is a distinct species, for which the term eleqan- tulus, which I had used to designate a variety, must now be adopted. From this species I can no longer separate Rh. delicatulus. Aerolepls orthole2is , Traq. .Eloniehthys ortholepls, Traq. Geol. Mag. (3) vol. i. 1884, p. 7. Aerolepis ortholepis, Trac1. Proc. :Roy. Soc. Edinb. 1889-9% p. 398. The Edinburgh .~{useum possesses a splendid specimen of a large Palmoniseid, 25-} inches in length, which, from the scale-ornament, I nmst refer to the same species as the fish in the British Museum go which six years ago I gave the name of ElonicMhys ortholepis. In the present specimen, however~ the great thickness of the scales, along with their shape, indicate that its position is in Acrolepis, a position corrobo- rated by the absence of serrations aIong 6he posterior margins of the scales. The original "]~lonic/~t]qis " ortholepis is, it may be added, an immature example 12 inches in length. Styracopterus Jhlcratus, Traq. .Holurusfulcratus, Traq. Trans. :Roy. Soc. Edinb. xxx. p. 46. The original specimen of tIolurus fulcratus, Traq, in the collection of the Geological Survey of Scotland is a mere fi'agment. By a mistake its locality was given as Glen- cartholm, whereas it was in reality found at Tarras Foot. The Geological Survey officers have since acquired a number of additional specimens from the same locality which show that the species does not belong to Itolurus, but to a new Downloaded by [North Carolina State University] at 12:23 07 March 2015 genus closely allied to Benedenicifth!ts ~, Tra% from the Carboniferous Limestone of Belgium. As these specimens belong to the Survey, I must defer their description to the forthcoming second part of the " Report." * Benedenhes, Traq., in de Koninck's ~Faune du Calcaire earbonif~re de la Belgique,' pt. i. 1878, p. L5. A critic in the Ann. &Mag. Nat. Hist. (5) vol. vi. 1880, p. 97~ having pointed out that the name ".I]enedenius" is preoccupied, I propose to alter it to .Benedenichthys, and at the same time to state that I have become convinced that, though it presents many re- semblances to the Platysomidm, it is after all more Palaeoniscid, and should be restored to the family Pal~eoniscidm. Dorsal fill nearly opposite the anal. I propose to separate from the genus Canobius the species pulehellus (op. cir. p. 51) and polltus (op. cir. p. 53)~ oft account of the more typically Pala~oniscid configuralion of their facial bones. I should have included them in Rhadin. icht.hgs were it not for the very slight obliquity of the suspen- sorlum~ which excludes them from the definition of the genus along with another species fi'om the Pumpherston oil-shales, which I recently described as Rh. macrocel)hahts e,. These species will therefore in future stand as Mesopomapulchelhtm~ politum~ and macroce_phalum. Mesolepis tuberculatus~ sp. n., Traq. Of this I have seen no really complete specimens. Such as have occurred show a small deep fish~ about 4 inches in length and 2 in depth~ with a large head occupying about one third of the entire length. From the structure of the head~ so far as it is seen, the position of the dorsal fin which com- mences at the culminating part of the back~ and the shape of the scales~ which are high and narrow~ there can be no doubt as to the species being referable to Mesolepis. The scales differ fi'om those of any known species in being ornamented externally with a sharply defined tubereulation~ the tubercles often tending to become confluent transversely. Localiqt. Glencartholm~ Eskdale. Type in Edinburgh ~nseum. Mesole29is has not hitherto been recorded from strata below the horizon of the Millstone Grit. 3lesoleTis rhombus, sp. n.~ Traq. Length 5 inches ; depth of body just in front of dorsal fin 2½ inches ; length of head contained a little more thau three times in the total.     Palaeont. afr., 38, 33-47 (2002) ANEWLATEPERMIANRAY-FINNED(ACTINOPTERYGIAN)FISHFROM THE BEAUFORT GROUP, SOUTH AFRICA by Patrick Bender Council for Geoscience, Private Bag X112, Pretoria, South Africa. e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT A new genus and species of actinopterygian (ray-finned) fish, Kompasia delaharpei, is described from Late Permian (Tatarian) fluvio-lacustrine, siltstone dominated deposits within the lower Beaufort Group of South Africa. It is currently known from two localities on adjoining farms, Wilgerbosch and Ganora, both in the New Bethesda district of the Eastern Cape Karoo region. The fossils were recovered from an uncertain formation, possibly closely equivalent to the Balfour Formation, within the Dicynodon Assemblage Zone. Kompasia delaharpei differs from previously described early actinopterygians, including the recently described new lower Beaufort Group taxon Bethesdaichthys kitchingi, on the basis of a combination of skull and post cranial characters. The genus is characterised by: a uniquely shaped subrectangular posterior blade of the maxilla, a shortened dorsal limb of the preopercular, and a dermopterotic and dermosphenotic contacting the nasal; furthermore, the subopercular is equal to or longer than the opercular, the dorsal fin is situated in the posterior third of the body, slightly behind the position of the anal fin, and the anterior rnidflank scales exhibit a smooth dermal pattern or surface, with a number of faint ganoine ridges present parallel to the posterior and ventral scale margins. Kompasia appears to exhibit a relatively conservative morphology similar to that in the lower Beaufort Group taxon Bethesdaichthys kitchingi. As such, Kompasia is derived relative to stem-actinopterans such as Howqualepis, Mimia and Moythomasia, and also derived relative to earlier southern African Palaeozoic actinopterygians such as Mentzichthys jubbi and Namaichthys schroederi, but basal to stem-neopterygians such as Australosomus and Saurichthys.

Bethesdaichthys is presently known from three localities, two in the New Bethesda and one in the Victoria West districts of the Karoo region respectively. The fossils were recovered from within the Abrahamskraal Formation Tapinocephalus Assemblage Zone at the Victoria West locality, and from an uncertain Formation possibly closely equivalent to the Balfour Formation, within the Dicynodon Assemblage Zone at the New Bethesda sites. Bethesdaichthys kitchingi is a fusiform fish, up to approximately 300mm in total length, with the skull displaying a moderately oblique suspensorium, and a maxilla with a large sub-rectangular postorbital blade. Furthermore there is a complex offour suborbital bones adjacent to the orbit. The pectoral fin is large relative to body size and the tail is heterocercal with an elongate tapered dorsal body lobe. The anterior midflank scales in particular exhibit a distinctive dermal ornamentation consisting of numerous ganoineridges. The phylogenetics and interrelationships of Bethesdaichthys kitchingiare examined. It appears to exhibit a relatively conservative morphology similar to that found in possibly related Carboniferous taxa such as the South African taxa Australichthysand Willomorichthys. Bethesdaichthys kitchingiis derived relative to stem-actinopterans such as the Howqualepis and Mimia, and also derived relative to southern African Palaeozoic actinoptyerygians such as Mentzichthys jubbl; and Namaichthys schroeden; but basal to stem­ neopterygians such as Australosomus, Perleldus and Saurichthys.

A uniform name and spelling are essential for the location of information. To facilitate this, a list of family- group names for fossil fishes has been compiled. I use the concept ‘Fishes’ in the usual sense, i.e., starting with the Agnatha up to the †Osteolepidiformes. All the family-group names proposed for fossil fishes found to date are listed, together with their author(s) and year of publication. The main goal of the list is to contribute to the usage of the correct family-group names for fossil fishes with a uniform spelling and to list the author(s) and date of those names. Diff erences among the species were noted in character complexes that may have played a role in feeding or propulsive regimes and fi ne-scale niche partitioning. A matrix of 111 characters and 40 taxa was constructed using relatively complete taxa ranging from the Devonian to the Recent. The family-group names of animals (superfamily, family, subfamily, supertribe, tribe and subtribe) are regulated by the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Particularly, the family names are very important, because they are among the most widely used of all technical animal names. A uniform name and spelling are essential for the location of information. To facilitate this, a list of family- group names for fossil fi shes has been compiled. I use the concept ‘Fishes’ in the usual sense, i.e., starting with the Agnatha up to the †Osteolepidiformes. All the family-group names proposed for fossil fi shes found to date are listed, together with their author(s) and year of publication. The main goal of the list is to contribute to the usage of the correct family-group names for fossil fi shes with a uniform spelling and to list the author(s) and date of those names. No valid family-group name description could be located for the following family-group names currently in usage: †Brindabellaspidae, †Diabolepididae, †Dorsetichthyidae, †Erichalcidae, †Holodipteridae, †Kentuckiidae, †Lepidaspididae, †Loganelliidae and †Pituriaspididae.
