WARRIOR-BISHOPSIN LA CHANSON DE ROLAND AND POWA DE MI0 CID EARL R. ANDERSON ARCHBISHOP TURPIN, THE fighting bishop in La Chanson de Roland, is a character whose behavior and attitudes are contrary to modem assumptions about what a medieval clergyman should have been. The poet's first mention of him, it is true, represents him in a role that is consistent with conventional views about the clergy: he volunteers to travel to Marsilion's court as Charlemagne's peace ambassador (264-73)-but so do the barons Naimon, Roland, and Olivier (246-58). In each subsequent appearance in the poem, however, Brpin accompanies the Frankish rearguard not as a peaceable messenger of the Prince of Peace but more and more as one of Charlemagne's most ferocious warriors. In his "sermun" at Roncevaux, he admonishes the Franks to fight, "Chrestientet aidez a sustenir" '[to] help to sustain the Christian faith' (1129), and "Clamez vos culpes, si preiez Deumercit" 'confess your sins, and pray to God for mercy' (1132), and he promises absolution for sins in exchange for military service, and martyrdom in exchange for death on the battlefield (1134-38). He rides to battle on a horse once owned by Grossaille, a king whom he had killed in Denmark (1488-89). During the course of battle, Tbrpin kills the Berber Corsablix, the enchanter Siglorel, the African Malquiant, the infernally-named Saracen Abisme, and four hundred others, elsewhere striking a War, Literature, and the Arts thousand blows (1235-60, 1390-95, 1414, 1470-1509, 1593-1612, 2091-98). lbrpin and Roland are the last of the Franks to die in the battle. -

The town is famous for its local produce like oranges, Mediterranean dishes such as paella, and a combination of beaches and mountainous terrain. I lived with a Spanish host family in Castellon which helped integrate me into the culture and beauty of Spain 2 •••• UNIVERSITAT DE JAUME I UJI was founded in 1991 and was named after the King that founded the Kingdom of Valencia. Above is an image of my intensive Spanish class that was taken at the university. Along with Spanish, I also was able to take courses in history, art, and business management. •••• VALENCIA ... / II ,fa:II l [ JI Valencia is the third largest city in Spain, and is located about 40 minutes away from Castellon by train. The image on the far right depicts a climate strike held in the main streets of Valencia. 4 •••• VALENCIA City of Arts and Sciences Valencia is known for its mix of gothic and modern architecture. The City of Arts and Sciences is a cultural complex that includes a open-air oceanographic park, a plaza for sporting events, a museum, and more. 5 •••• BARCELONA Barcelona is located on the eastern coast of Spain and is about 2 hours from Castellon by train. It is a very tourist filled city known for its beaches and the famous Sagrada Familia church. The city also boasts many architectural masterpieces created by Antoni Gaudi. His work and influence are seen all throughout the city. -

The University of Texas at Arlington, 2008 Supervising Professor: Douglas Richmond The universality of the cross image within the transatlantic confrontation meant not only a hegemony of culture, but of symbolism. The symbol of the cross existed in both European and American societies hundreds of years before Columbus. In both cultures, the cross was integral in religious ceremony, priestly decoration, and cosmic maps. As a symbol of life and death, of human and divine suffering, of religious and political acquiescence, no other image in transatlantic history has held such a perennial, powerful message as the cross. For colonial Mexico, which felt the brunt of Spanish initiative, the symbol of the cross penetrated the autochthonous culture out of which the independent nation and indigenous church were born. -

Michael Torres 1 It is unlikely that any American elementary school student could forget the importance of the year 1492, as it immediately brings to mind explorer Christopher Columbus, his three tiny sailing ships and the daring voyage of discovery to the New World. Of no less importance was what historian Teofilo Ruiz of UCLA has called the Other 1492, the completion of the Reconquista (Reconquest) of the Moorish kingdoms in Iberia, and the expulsion of the Jews from Spain by the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragón, and Queen Isabella of Castile.1 These seemingly unconnected events influenced the history and economy of Spain and Europe, setting in motion the exploration, immigration, and colonization of the Americas which gave rise to Spain‟s Golden Age. -

I, 4; Cerv., Quixot., 2.51) RESUMENLa accidentada vida del caballero John D. Breval (c. 1680-1738), clasicista del Tri- nity College de Cambridge, conocido literato inglés y preceptor de nobles en el «Grand Tour», incluyó una etapa como militar y hombre de confianza del Duque de Marlborough. Como militar y preceptor, viajó al sur de Portugal y España en tres ocasiones, entre 1708 y 1716. A su paso por muchas ciudades del Alentejo y Andalucía tomó múltiples notas sobre sus anti- güedades y copió 49 inscripciones romanas, la mayor parte de las cuales por autopsia. En 1726, al publicar en Londres sus Remarks on several parts of Europe (dedicado al futuro conde de Cholmondeley), incluyó al final sus notas ibéricas, acompañadas de un nutrido aparato de textos antiguos y bibliografía de su época. En este trabajo presentamos, además de algu- nas novedades biográficas sobre el autor, la traducción al español de los citados capítulos, acompañada de nuestro estudio crítico. Los epígrafes y los detalles sobre ellos que transmite Breval resultan ser un valioso testimonio para nuevas lecturas, consideración de falsos como auténticos, etc. Nuestra investigación sirve, pues, para devolver a John D. Breval su buen cré- dito como transmisor de inscripciones romanas (damnatus por Theodor Mommsen y Emil Hübner en el CIL II), y junto con él también el del gran humanista portugués Andrés de Resende, muchas veces tachado de falsario, a nuestro juicio injustamente. -

Christian Allies of the Ottoman Empire by Emrah Safa Gürkan The relationship between the Ottomans and the Christians did not evolve around continuous hostility and conflict, as is generally assumed. The Ottomans employed Christians extensively, used Western know-how and technology, and en- couraged European merchants to trade in the Levant. On the state level, too, what dictated international diplomacy was not the religious factors, but rather rational strategies that were the results of carefully calculated priorities, for in- stance, several alliances between the Ottomans and the Christian states. All this cooperation blurred the cultural bound- aries and facilitated the flow of people, ideas, technologies and goods from one civilization to another. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Introduction 2. Notes Citation Introduction Cooperation between the Ottomans and various Christian groups and individuals started as early as the beginning of the 14th century, when the Ottoman state itself emerged. The Ottomans, although a Muslim polity, did not hesitate to cooperate with Christians for practical reasons. Nevertheless, the misreading of the Ghaza (Holy War) literature1 and the consequent romanticization of the Ottomans' struggle in carrying the banner of Islam conceal the true nature of rela- tions between Muslims and Christians. Rather than an inevitable conflict, what prevailed was cooperation in which cul- tural, ethnic, and religious boundaries seemed to disappear. Ÿ1 The Ottomans came into contact and allied themselves with Christians on two levels. Firstly, Christian allies of the Ot- tomans were individuals; the Ottomans employed a number of Christians in their service, mostly, but not always, after they had converted. -

Olena Semenyaka, The “First Lady” of Ukrainian Nationalism Adrien Nonjon Illiberalism Studies Program Working Papers, September 2020 For years, Ukrainian nationalist movements such as Svoboda or Pravyi Sektor were promoting an introverted, state-centered nationalism inherited from the early 1930s’ Ukrainian Nationalist Organization (Orhanizatsiia Ukrayins'kykh Natsionalistiv) and largely dominated by Western Ukrainian and Galician nationalist worldviews. The EuroMaidan revolution, Crimea’s annexation by Russia, and the war in Donbas changed the paradigm of Ukrainian nationalism, giving birth to the Azov movement. The Azov National Corps (Natsional’nyj korpus), led by Andriy Biletsky, was created on October 16, 2014, on the basis of the Azov regiment, now integrated into the Ukrainian National Guard. The Azov National Corps is now a nationalist party claiming around 10,000 members and deployed in Ukrainian society through various initiatives, such as patriotic training camps for children (Azovets) and militia groups (Natsional’ny druzhiny). Azov can be described as a neo- nationalism, in tune with current European far-right transformations: it refuses to be locked into old- fashioned myths obsessed with a colonial relationship to Russia, and it sees itself as outward-looking in that its intellectual framework goes beyond Ukraine’s territory, deliberately engaging pan- European strategies. Olena Semenyaka (b. 1987) is the female figurehead of the Azov movement: she has been the international secretary of the National Corps since 2018 (and de facto leader since the party’s very foundation in 2016) while leading the publishing house and metapolitical club Plomin (Flame). Gaining in visibility as the Azov regiment transformed into a multifaceted movement, Semenyaka has become a major nationalist theorist in Ukraine. -

Muslim Control Of Spain The Reconquista and especially the Inquisition encompass one of the darkest times in Spanish history. It was a time when faith, greed and politics combined to bring about the deaths of many. Let's start with the Spanish Reconquista. In simpler terms, the Reconquista was the attempt by Christian Spain to expel all Muslims from the Iberian Peninsula. In the 8th century, Spain was not one united nation but instead a group of kingdoms. In the early 8th century, these kingdoms of Spain were invaded by Muslim forces from North Africa. Within a few years of this invasion, most of Spain was under Muslim control. In fact, the Muslims renamed the Spanish kingdoms Al- Andalus or Andalusia, but for our purposes, we're going to stick with Spain. Since the Muslims were an advanced society, Spain prospered. The Muslims were also very tolerant of other religions, allowing Muslims, Christians and Jews to basically take up the same space. However, Muslim political leaders were very suspicious of one another, which led to disunity among the many kingdoms. This disunity opened up the doors for Christian rule to seep in, and while the Muslims kept firm control of the southern kingdoms of Granada, Christian power began taking hold in the northern kingdoms of Aragon, Castile and Navarre. By the end of the 13th century, only Granada remained under Muslim control. -
