Soldiers, civilians, and slaves listened to and performed popular songs almost constantly. The heightened political and emotional climate of the war created a need for Americans to express themselves in a variety of ways, and music was one of the best. It did not require a high level of literacy and it could be performed in groups to ensure that the ideas embedded in each song immediately reached a large audience. Previous studies of Civil War music have focused on the music itself. Historians and musicologists have examined the types of songs published during the war and considered how they reflected the popular mood of northerners and southerners. This study utilizes the letters, diaries, memoirs, and newspapers of the 1860s to delve deeper and determine what roles music played in Civil War America. This study begins by examining the explosion of professional and amateur music that accompanied the onset of the Civil War. Of the songs produced by this explosion, the most popular and resonant were those that addressed the political causes of the war and were adopted as the rallying cries of northerners and southerners. All classes of Americans used songs in a variety of ways, and this study specifically examines the role of music on the home-front, in the armies, and among African Americans. -

Olena Semenyaka, The “First Lady” of Ukrainian Nationalism Adrien Nonjon Illiberalism Studies Program Working Papers, September 2020 For years, Ukrainian nationalist movements such as Svoboda or Pravyi Sektor were promoting an introverted, state-centered nationalism inherited from the early 1930s’ Ukrainian Nationalist Organization (Orhanizatsiia Ukrayins'kykh Natsionalistiv) and largely dominated by Western Ukrainian and Galician nationalist worldviews. The EuroMaidan revolution, Crimea’s annexation by Russia, and the war in Donbas changed the paradigm of Ukrainian nationalism, giving birth to the Azov movement. The Azov National Corps (Natsional’nyj korpus), led by Andriy Biletsky, was created on October 16, 2014, on the basis of the Azov regiment, now integrated into the Ukrainian National Guard. The Azov National Corps is now a nationalist party claiming around 10,000 members and deployed in Ukrainian society through various initiatives, such as patriotic training camps for children (Azovets) and militia groups (Natsional’ny druzhiny). Azov can be described as a neo- nationalism, in tune with current European far-right transformations: it refuses to be locked into old- fashioned myths obsessed with a colonial relationship to Russia, and it sees itself as outward-looking in that its intellectual framework goes beyond Ukraine’s territory, deliberately engaging pan- European strategies. Olena Semenyaka (b. 1987) is the female figurehead of the Azov movement: she has been the international secretary of the National Corps since 2018 (and de facto leader since the party’s very foundation in 2016) while leading the publishing house and metapolitical club Plomin (Flame). Gaining in visibility as the Azov regiment transformed into a multifaceted movement, Semenyaka has become a major nationalist theorist in Ukraine. -

Muslim Control Of Spain The Reconquista and especially the Inquisition encompass one of the darkest times in Spanish history. It was a time when faith, greed and politics combined to bring about the deaths of many. Let's start with the Spanish Reconquista. In simpler terms, the Reconquista was the attempt by Christian Spain to expel all Muslims from the Iberian Peninsula. In the 8th century, Spain was not one united nation but instead a group of kingdoms. In the early 8th century, these kingdoms of Spain were invaded by Muslim forces from North Africa. Within a few years of this invasion, most of Spain was under Muslim control. In fact, the Muslims renamed the Spanish kingdoms Al- Andalus or Andalusia, but for our purposes, we're going to stick with Spain. Since the Muslims were an advanced society, Spain prospered. The Muslims were also very tolerant of other religions, allowing Muslims, Christians and Jews to basically take up the same space. However, Muslim political leaders were very suspicious of one another, which led to disunity among the many kingdoms. This disunity opened up the doors for Christian rule to seep in, and while the Muslims kept firm control of the southern kingdoms of Granada, Christian power began taking hold in the northern kingdoms of Aragon, Castile and Navarre. By the end of the 13th century, only Granada remained under Muslim control. -

THE ORIGINS OF THE “McCrackens” By Philip D. Smith, Jr. PhD, FSTS, GTS, FSA Scot “B’e a’Ghaidhlig an canan na h’Albanaich” – “Gaelic was the language of the Scottish people.” The McCrackens are originally Scottish and speakers of the Scottish Gaelic language, a cousin to Irish Gaelic. While today, Gaelic is only spoken by a few thousands, it was the language of most of the people of the north and west of Scotland until after 1900. The McCracken history comes from a long tradition passed from generation to generation by the “seannachies”, the oral historians, of the Gaelic speaking peoples. According to tradition, the family is named for Nachten, Lord of Moray, a district in the northeast of Scotland. Nachten supposedly lived in the 9th century. In the course of time a number of his descendants moved southwest across Scotland and settled in Argyll. The family multiplied and prospered. The Gaelic word for “son” is “mac” and that for “children” is “clann” The descendants of Nachten were called by their neighbors, the Campbells, MacDougalls, and others the “Children of the Son of Nachten”, in Gaelic “Cloinne MacNachtain”, “Clan MacNachtan”. Spelling was not regularized in either Scotland or America until well after 1800. Two spellings alternate for the guttural /k/-like sound common in many Gaelic words, -ch and –gh. /ch/ is the most common Scottish spelling but the sound may be spelled –gh. The Scottish word for “lake” is “loch” while in Northern England and Ireland the same word is spelled “lough”. “MacLachlan” and “Mac Loughlin” are the same name as are “Docherty” and “Dougherty”. -

SNAKES LURKING IN THE GRASS: LINCOLN AND THE COPPERHEADS IN THE CIVIL WAR In January 1863, Abraham Lincoln was confronted with a threat more dangerous than that of the Confederate Army. The Union Army was visibly struggling toward victory with each passing battle and it seemed as if the war was far from concluding. Lincoln’s problems were not just limited to the battlefield, but the president was also burdened in dealing with intense opposition toward his government on the homefront. The threat was the Copperhead movement: Congressional Democrats were banning together in opposition to the war and proposing immediate peace through negotiations with the Confederacy. The Copperhead challenge came at an uneasy period in Lincoln’s presidency as the American public became more hostile towards the war effort. Numerous setbacks for the Union troops and the hardships of the war at home wore at the patience of many Americans and the President himself. The Copperheads took advantage of the public agitation by attacking Lincoln’s actions and character while deeming his expansion of power as unconstitutional and dangerous. Lincoln’s suspension of habeas corpus and use of martial law agitated this political opposition. The Copperheads were successful in gaining support before the election of 1864 through their attacks on Lincoln’s perceived abuse of civil liberties and expansion of power; however, Lincoln’s ability to lead the nation in troubling times, as well as a turn in the tide of the war, prevented the election of a Copperhead president and exposed the weaknesses of the movement. The supporters of the Copperhead movement were quite varied and diverse. -

Jones This project explores the central importance of captivity and revenge to four novels in the genre of frontier romance: Charles Brockden Brown‘s Edgar Huntly (1799), James Fenimore Cooper‘s Last of the Mohicans (1826), Catharine Maria Sedgwick‘s Hope Leslie (1827), and Robert Montgomery Bird‘s Nick of the Woods (1837). Although a fundamental plot aspect of nearly every work in the genre, the threat of captivity and the necessity of revenge are rarely approached as topics of inquiry, despite their deep connection to the structure and action of the texts. Perhaps most importantly, as critics Jeremy Engels and Greg Goodale note, these twin tropes serve as a way of unifying disparate social groups and creating order; in essence, such depictions function as a form of what Michel Foucault terms ―governmentality,‖ logics of control that originate from non-governmental sources but promote systems of governance. -

Suzanne Akbari IMAGINING ISLAM: The Role of Images in Medieval Depictions of Muslims On the edges of medieval Europe, there was real contact between Chris tians and Muslims. Multicultural, multi-religious societies existed in al-Andalus and Sicily, while cultural contact of a more contentious sort took place in the Near East. In most parts of medieval Europe, how ever, Muslims were seen rarely or not at all, and Islam was known only at second - or third-hand. Western European accounts written during the Middle Ages invariably misrepresent Islam; they vary only to the degree with which they parody the religion and its adherents. One might imagine that such misrepresentation is simply due to the limited information available to the medieval European curious about Islam and the Prophet. If such were the case, one would expect to find a linear progression in medieval accounts of Islam, moving from extremely fanci ful depictions to more straightforward, factual chronicles. Instead, one finds accurate, even rather compassionate accounts of Islamic theology side by side with bizarre, antagonistic, and even hateful depictions of Muslims and their belief. During the twelfth century, the French abbot of Cluny, Peter the Venerable, engaged several translators and went to Muslim Spain to produce a translation of the Qur'an and to learn about Islam in order to effect the conversion of Muslims to Christianity by means of rational persuasion, approaching them, as Peter himself put it, "not in hatred, but in love."1 During the same century, however, the chanson de geste tradition flourished in France and began to be exported into the literatures of England and Germany.2 In these twelfth-century epics glorifying war and chivalric heroism, Muslims are depicted as basically similar to Christians: the structure of their armies, their kings, and their martial techniques are essentially the same.
