At the same time, a growing appreciation of regional issues has raised interest in regional differences in each of these countries. This volume of the “Portrait of the Regions” series responds to this need and follows on in a tradition which has seen four volumes devoted to the current Member States, a fifth to Hungary, a sixth volume dedicated to the Czech Republic and Poland, a seventh to the Slovak Republic and the most recent volume covering the Baltic States, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Examining the 12 statistical regions of Slovenia, this ninth volume in the series has an almost identical structure to Volume 8, itself very similar to earlier publications.

  • Construction of Residental Buildings on Columns As an Alternative to Construction in Areas Exposed to Floods
10.1515/jbe-2014-0010 CONSTRUCTION OF RESIDENTAL BUILDINGS ON COLUMNS AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO CONSTRUCTION IN AREAS EXPOSED TO FLOODS DOM EN KUŠAR1 AND MATEJA VOLGEM U T2 1Faculty of Architecture, University of Ljubljana, Ljubljana, Slovenia [email protected] 2Faculty of Architecture, University of Ljubljana, Ljubljana, Slovenia [email protected] Abstract: Floods that have in recent years become a constant in developed areas are raising the issue of how to adapt to nature when constructing housing. The construction of retarding basins and high dikes are the most frequently used alternatives of protecting the urban environment. Such a practice is most commonly found in Europe where it however, has unfortunately shown itself on several times, not to be the most effective. People from North America who live in areas often affected by floods, build their housing on columns. In Slovenia, not much thought is given to this, which is probably the result of the traditional mentality that promotes the building of massive residential houses and the issue of structural engineering that involves the so-called soft ground floor. New materials and new structural principles make construction on columns possible, which has been proven by the example of the residential building on low bearing soil in the seismic and flood risk area of the Ljubljana Marshes. Keywords: Architecture, Residential Buildings, Flood, Columns. 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1. Flood risk of residental buildings and the problems of solving the issue with dikes A flood is a disaster that occurs when water flows over the limits of channels or banks.

And at that mo- ment, everything emerged that had waited right until the end: the best of everything! Enough to create another world. All this was brought together by the last, the most important element: a handful of love. This love had a special power. It connected the sea with mountains, forests with waters, fields with vine- yards, the specialties of the underground with the light of the sky, so the beauties touch each other in Slovenia. With this closeness, they changed the initial infatuation into a lasting green love; with their existence, they encouraged an active search for the good; with the experiences they enable, they boosted a healthy heart rate.
