JELASKA2, Aljoša PIRNAT3, Mladen KUČINIĆ1, Paula DURBEŠIĆ1 SUMMARY: The aim of this study was to investigate responses of ant and carabid assemblages and their morpho-ecological traits to habitat differences within natural temperate forests in Medvednica Nature Park. To quantify ha- bitat differences in examined areas, both structural heterogeneity of the vege- tation and taxonomic diversity of plants were measured on six plots. Habitat complexity was quantified using four habitat characteristics wit- hin the site: tree canopy cover; shrub canopy cover; ground herbs and leaf lit- ter cover. Ants and carabids were sampled using pitfall traps. Ant species richness and abundance, unlike carabid species richness were positively correlated with habitat complexity, especially with leaf litter cover on plots. The responses of insects morpho-ecological traits to habitat were recor- ded, with more large bodied carabids present in more complex site and higher abundance of opportunist ant species in more open sites with low complexity of vegetation. Higher dominance of certain carabid species at the lower plots then those on the top of the mountain, suggest competitive exclusion, confirming lower areas as more stable. Species adapted to colder climate, that inhabit hig- her elevations such as flightless forest specialist Cychrus caraboides and Cara- bus irregularis, and boreo-montane ant species Camponotus herculeanus, are less competent to colonize lower areas.

The available reports were dealing with different faunistic groups, presented by country. Effort was done to unify the available information and to identify the species of greatest conservation concern, for which site-conservation approach – in this sense, possible establishment of biosphere reserve - is considered appropriate. In total, presence of about 1300 animal species is known for the geographical border of Osogovo Mountain, with number of taxonomic groups bein insufficiently studied. From this total, 1030 are invertebrates, and 271 are vertebrates (plus 63 non-breeding bird species). The fauna of Invertebrates is a mixture of species characteristic for Central Europe, (sub)Mediterranean region, northern Europe and alpine belt. Only some groups are well studied, and major gaps exist for many others. 61 molusk species are recorded, 60 of which snails. Seven of them are Balkan endemics. Spiders are well studied, and 590 species are known so far. About 60 are Balkan endemics, and some sre endemic to Osogovo Mt. One species is of Europena importance. About 20 species of dragonflies are recorded, two of which are Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. One-hundred and five orthopterans are known, 17 of which are of conservation value, and 13 are endemic.

Introduction Ground beetles of Prespa National Park in Albania have not been surveyed so far. The research conducted in the Macedonian and Greek parts of Prespa watershed indicate presence of a rich fauna, number of endemic species as well as species of conservation importance ((Drovenik and Peks 1994) (Arndt et al. 2011). The main goal of the present survey is to establish: • A comprehensive list of the ground beetles in Prespa National Park • Evaluate the fauna of ground beetles on the basis of presence of endemic and rare species, as well as species of conservation importance (national and international) • Indicate the most important habitats and localities for ground beetles • Recommend conservation measures and management practices within Prespa National Park • Propose indicator species and monitoring scheme 1.1 Literature review (present knowledge) The fauna of ground beetles (Carabidae) of Albania counts up to 550 species (Guéorguiev 2007). However, there are no data for the Albanian part of Prespa. The Macedonian and Greek parts of Prespa have been surveyed to a certain (low) extent ((Drovenik and Peks 1994) (Guéorguiev and Hristovski 2010) (Arndt et al. 2011). The presence of several local endemic species on Galchica Mt. has been proved: Duvalius vignai, Trechus galicicaensis, Nebria macedonica galicica, as well as other subendemic species (Molops rufipes, Zabrus albanicus, Myas chalybaeus, Carabus neumeyeri, etc.). Pelister Mt. (part of the Prespa watershed) shelters many other endemic species, most of them unlikely to be recorded in Prespa National Park in Albania.
