View All Four Women Again, but with Another Purpose in Mind DEMYSTIFYING THE NOTION, “THE WEST IS BETTER”: A GERMAN ORAL HISTORY PROJECT Jennifer Stanek A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2011 Committee: Dr. Christina Guenther, Advisor Dr. Kristie Foell ii ABSTRACT Dr. Christina Guenther, Advisor I began my project in 2004 as an oral history project, involving four German women, with the purpose of finding out what motivated them either to flee East Germany before the construction of the Berlin Wall or stay. Five years later I wished to revive my project and interview all four women again, but with another purpose in mind. What had started out as a desire to understand my own family’s past turned into a desire to gain a better idea of the complexity of the notion, “the West is better,” and, therefore, an even better understanding of what moved a people across dangerous borders. In this thesis I examine what the idea, “the West is better,” meant to real individuals, who chose a life in the West either before the construction of the Wall on August 13, 1961 or in the 1980s before the fall of the Wall. I examine how this notion applied to their experiences specifically, the GDR-refugees’ contribution to the creation and perpetuation of this idea, and how this concept has affected the German people since 1949. The notion, “the West is better,” assumed much mythical character during the existence of the GDR, which it largely has not shed. This is apparent in the manner, in which it is still often expressed: as an idea whose origins can be found in nature, not in history, and one that often goes unexplained. Using Roland Barthes’ ideas on myth, I was able to spot mythical elements of the belief, “the West is better.” My interviewees’ narratives challenge many commonly perceived associations with this notion. A primary thread throughout this thesis is a discussion of the complexity of myth as well as the complexity of oral history. iii “Any life story, written or oral, more or less dramatically, is in one sense a personal mythology, a self-justification.” -- Raphael Samuel and Paul Thompson iv I dedicate this thesis to my German Großeltern for fleeing to West Germany and raising my mother there and to my American grandmother, who consistently encouraged me to finish this project while she was recovering from hip surgery. The plan was to fly out of West Berlin to West Germany. Whereas the preparations which had been carried out in the months prior to departure had had to be made secretly, for fleeing East Germany was dangerous and could lead to imprisonment,1 the journey itself was to any outsider a regular one. However, underneath my family’s stoic facial expressions lay a web of conflicting emotions: fear, hope, suspense and sadness. Just before boarding the train my mother said goodbye to her grandparents; she did not know if she would ever see them again. Not only did my mother and her parents leave all family members, friends, and personal belongings behind, they said goodbye to their entire past and the homeland (Heimat) of their ancestors. This is the story my mother told me as a child. My first conscious encounter with the subject

Domer's luscious – and I mean luscious – set design for the Drayton's swanky mid-century aerie home in the San Francisco hills, and I spent a great deal of time mentally rearranging my furniture from home to see where it might fit into these swell new digs. The place is stunning, and I'm moving in. If you're a fan of HGTV, you, too, will join me. An immense cantilevered skylight anchors the room, as does its opposite focal point, the stone hearth and open fireplace that separates living room from dining room. The floors are polished stonework or wood; I couldn't tell since they are covered by huge patterned rugs of artful design. The doors are paneled with horizontal panes of glass, an iron staircase winds up to the bedroom level, niches with tasteful objets d'art fill the walls, the light fixtures are those cool atomic chandeliers, classy modern art graces the walls, painted tile edges the bar counter. This place speaks power and money and class. Oh, there's a play going on inside it.

    Special CWIHP Research Report The Victims at the Berlin Wall, 1961-1989 By Hans-Hermann Hertle/Maria Nooke August 2011 Forty-four years after the Berlin Wall was built and 15 years after the East German archives were opened, reliable data on the number of people killed at the Wall were still lacking. Depending on the sources, purpose, and date of the studies, the figures varied between 78 (Central Registry of State Judicial Administrations in Salzgitter), 86 (Berlin Public Prosecution Service), 92 (Berlin Police President), 122 (Central Investigation Office for Government and Unification Criminality), and more than 200 deaths (Working Group 13 August). The names of many of the victims, their biographies and the circumstances in which they died were widely unknown.1 This special CWIHP report summarizes the findings of a research project by the Center for Research on Contemporary History Potsdam and the Berlin Wall Memorial Site and Documentation Center which sought to establish the number and identities of the individuals who died at the Berlin Wall between 1961 and 1989 and to document their lives and deaths through historical and biographical research.2 Definition In order to provide reliable figures, the project had to begin by developing clear criteria and a definition of what individuals are to be considered victims at the Berlin Wall. We regard the “provable causal and spatial connection of a death with an attempted escape or a direct or indirect cause or lack of action by the ‘border organs’ in the border territory” as the critical factor. In simpler terms: the criteria are either an attempted escape or a temporal and spatial link between the death and the border regime.

In his book about 1968 in East Germany, Der Traum von der Revolte [The Dream of Rebellion], Stefan Wolle, then an 18-year-old stu- dent, remembers the eerie quietness of East Berlin’s streets during that summer. As Soviet tanks were rolling into Prague, nothing seemed to be happening in the realm of East German state leader Walter Ulbricht. Yet it was precisely this stark and depressing contrast between the calm surface and inner revulsion that would linger in people’s memories for years. 1968 in East Germany does not evoke dramatic images of protesting students, angry crowds, and countercultural discourses about Vietnam or sexual revolution. Still, 1968 was a signifi cant turning point in East Germany’s history. While the small-scale protests against the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia never reached the larger public, the Prague crackdown destroyed whatever illusions people still harbored about “real existing” socialism.

    Chronik der Oberschützenmeister des SSV Sandhausen e. V. 1908/53 1908 wurde im Gasthaus zum Grünen Baum der Sandhäuser Schützenverein als “Flobertschützenverein“ gegründet. Bei der Gründungsversammlung wurde Heinrich Kippenhahn zum ersten OSM des neu gegründeten Vereins gewählt. Schriftführer war Christian Brandt. Vereinslokal war das Gasthaus zum “Grüne Baum“, wo auch eine Schießstätte für Luftdruckwaffen eingerichtet wurde. Gründungsmitglieder waren unter anderen Philipp Schütz sen., Karl Schütz sen., Heinrich Scheid, Philipp Baumann und Jakob Schmidt. Gründungsvorstand Heinrich Kippenhan OSM von 1908 bis 1914 und von 1920 bis 1923 Christian Schilling wurde 1889 auf dem ehemaligen Schilling-Hof in Leimen geboren. Er kam als Sattlergeselle nach Sandhausen, wo er seine spätere Frau aus dem Hause Schütz (Grüner Baum) kennen lernte. Im 1. Weltkrieg leistete er als Artillerist seinen Kriegsdienst in Russland ab, zu dem er mit einem Pferd von Philipp Schütz zog und mit dem er auch wieder unversehrt zurückkehrte. Nach dem Krieg machte er seine Meisterprüfung als Sattler und Polsterer und unterhielt danach in der Hauptstraße eine Sattlerei, Polsterei und Bettfedernreinigung. Er war 7 Jahre Oberschützenmeister. Von diesem Amt trat er als stets geradlinig Denkender wegen Schiebereien 1939 zurück und aus dem Schützenverein aus. Christian Schilling starb 1963, für ihn gab es zeitlebens nur ein Reich, das Kaiserreich. Christian Schilling OSM von 1923 bis 1930 1908 Sandhausen Albert Breiter war Bäckermeister und besaß in Sandhausen in der Augasse eine eigene Bäckerei, die heute nicht mehr besteht. Unter seiner Amtszeit setzte eine spürbare Aufwärtsentwicklung im Schießsport ein. Er führte auch zum alljährlichen Preisschießen Naturalien als Preise ein. Es wurde ein Schwein gekauft, das geschlachtet und in Portionen zerlegt wurde.

Timothy Laurie University of Sydney To borrow a phrase from a program that foreshadows much of Hamilton Carroll’s argument, Affirmative Reaction reads like a captain’s log of what stressed out, fed up, self-sacrificing white men are up to on America’s screens – and sometimes, on paper and CDs too. Drawing on films (Brokeback Mountain, Million Dollar Baby, Gran Torino, Traffic and Syriana), television programs (24, American Chopper), comics (The Call of Duty) and music (Eminem, including 8 Mile), Carroll argues that “appeals to injury... incorporate and mobilize failure as a constitutive force for the reorientation of posthegemonic forms of white masculinist privilege” (2). Rather than distancing itself from identity politics, associated here with “women’s rights, gay rights, and civil rights eras” (7), white masculinity now announces itself as a marginal identity: Clint Eastwood the reformed racist and conscientious hero in Gran Torino, Michael Douglas the troubled and transformed father in Traffic, and Eminem the ‘white trash’ upstart in 8 Mile. In other texts, notably Million Dollar Baby and a series of comics based on September 11 fire-fighters, the special status afforded to white ethnicity also serves as an alibi for familiar clichés of white male heroism.
