    H Statement on The Proposed Renovation of Gare du Nord, Paris Society of Architectural Historians Heritage Conservation Committee Background As Paris prepares for the 2024 Summer Olympics, Gare du Nord is slated to become a major conduit of visitors travelling from the Charles de Gaulle airport to the city of Paris. As well, the station serves as the terminus of the international high-speed Eurostar rail service. The station strains under the burden of its current passenger load, and that load will increase substantially during the Olympics. An expansion and modernization of this essential Parisian transportation hub is certainly in order. Work is scheduled to begin in 2020. Issue Gare du Nord is also one of the most significant rail stations in the Western world. Designed by Jacques I. Hittorff and constructed between 1861 and 1864, Gare du Nord serves rail destinations in northern France and Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Some 222 million passengers pass through Gare du Nord in a given year, over 700,000 passengers daily, making it the busiest rail station in Europe. While functional improvements are necessary, its preservation is essential. The current renovation proposal, designed by S.N.C.F. Gares & Connextions, goes far beyond functional improvements. S.N.C.F. proposes an additional 164,000 square feet of space, and reimagines Gare du Nord as a commercial center, including a co-working space, fitness amenities, and an abundance of retail facilities. The proposed renovation focuses on R.E.R commuters, and creates a mall-like commercial development that threatens to overwhelm the historic rail station.

Over the decades, it has managed to adapt to the modernisation of the rail network, preparing for the arrival of Eurostar and opening new lines towards Northern Europe. With more than 700 000 people going through the station each day (i.e. 200 million travellers per year), the long-term increase in numbers of visitors has affected the quality of its facilities. Providing a solution to crowded traveller spaces is a priority for SNCF Gares & Connexions and necessitates a large-scale redevelopment. Metrokaartjes (ook geldig in de RER) zijn te koop in het barrijtuig van Thalys (rijtuig 4, 14, 24). Kosten per persoon per enkele reis: € 1,70. Het is aan te raden het kaartje hier alvast aan te schaffen, omdat het bij de loketten in Paris Nord zeer druk kan zijn. NB: er is geen verschil in prijs tussen de aankoop aan boord van Thalys en aan het loket in Paris Nord. Loop na aankomst van de trein het perron helemaal af tot in de stationshal. Volg daar de bordjes (RER) (M) en neem de trap naar beneden Blijf onderaan de trap de bordjes (RER) volgen. Zodra de lijnnummers worden weergegeven volg je: (RER) (D) (groen) Ga door de poortjes (bewaar je metrokaartje) en volg: (RER) (D2) (D4) (richting: Melun, Malesherbes). Je gaat nog 2 roltrappen af. Op het perron hangen computerschermen waarop de eerstvolgende treinen naar bovengenoemde bestemmingen staan aangegeven. Bovendien hangen er grote borden met daarop alle tussengelegen haltes weergegeven. Op dit bord geeft een gele kleur / lampje links van de haltenaam aan dat de eerstvolgende trein daar zal stoppen. Neem de trein naar de tweede halte (10 min. reistijd): Gare de Lyon. Alle treinen naar Melun, Malesherbes stoppen bij deze halte. Gebruik je bewaarde metrokaartje om weer door de poortjes te komen. Volg daarna de bordjes: Sortie, Gare SNCF – TGV – Grandes Lignes. Je gaat weer 2 verdiepingen naar boven, totdat je in het station terecht komt.

Stoop Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands Abstract The high-speed railway Amsterdam (The Netherlands)-Antwerp (Belgium) is nearly completed. As part of a TEN-T priority project it will connect to major metropolitan areas in Northwest Europe. High-speed railways have been built in many (European) countries. So, at first sight, the development of this particular high-speed railway should be relatively straightforward, but the situation seems to be more complicated. Full interoperability is necessary in order to run direct international services. However, there turned out to be compatibility problems that are mainly caused by the way decision making has taken place, in particular with respect to the choice and implementation of ERTMS, the new European railway signalling system. In this contribution major technical and institutional choices, as well as the choice of system borders, that have all been made by decision makers involved in the development of the high-speed railway Amsterdam-Antwerp will be analyzed. This will make it possible to draw some lessons that might be used for future railway projects in Europe and other parts of the world.
