A Retrospective of Preservation Practice and the New York City Subway System
Under the Big Apple: a Retrospective of Preservation Practice and the New York City Subway System by Emma Marie Waterloo This thesis/dissertation document has been electronically approved by the following individuals: Tomlan,Michael Andrew (Chairperson) Chusid,Jeffrey M. (Minor Member) UNDER THE BIG APPLE: A RETROSPECTIVE OF PRESERVATION PRACTICE AND THE NEW YORK CITY SUBWAY SYSTEM A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Emma Marie Waterloo August 2010 © 2010 Emma Marie Waterloo ABSTRACT The New York City Subway system is one of the most iconic, most extensive, and most influential train networks in America. In operation for over 100 years, this engineering marvel dictated development patterns in upper Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. The interior station designs of the different lines chronicle the changing architectural fashion of the aboveground world from the turn of the century through the 1940s. Many prominent architects have designed the stations over the years, including the earliest stations by Heins and LaFarge. However, the conversation about preservation surrounding the historic resource has only begun in earnest in the past twenty years. It is the system’s very heritage that creates its preservation controversies. After World War II, the rapid transit system suffered from several decades of neglect and deferred maintenance as ridership fell and violent crime rose. At the height of the subway’s degradation in 1979, the decision to celebrate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the opening of the subway with a local landmark designation was unusual. -

Cubic Partners with Dexda to Deliver Next-Generation Event Management for Customers in New York and London
Cubic partners with Dexda to deliver next-generation event management for customers in New York and London. The Dexda solution enables predictive event management for transport authorities managed by Cubic in New York and London. Background The New York City (NYC) subway and bus system is one of the most efficient public transportation systems in the world. Ridership across both is approximately eight million daily and more than 2.5 billion journeys annually. Cubic Transportation Systems (Cubic) has worked with (MTA) for nearly three decades now, starting with the implementation of the entire subway system accepting MetroCard, a magnetic swipe card allowing customers to load fares electronically. Today, more than 90 per cent of trips taken on NYC subways and buses Cubic was selected by the (MTA) to deliver and manage this major project are made with MetroCard. based on the success of Oyster. Boclair-Academy-School-Handbook
Boclair Academy School Handbook 2019-2020 January 2019 Dear Parent Welcome to the Boclair Academy handbook for session 2019-2020. Boclair Academy is a six-year comprehensive which serves its catchment area of South Bearsden and the village of Torrance (full details of the delineated catchment area can be accessed from Education Services, Southbank House, 1 Strathkelvin Place, Kirkintilloch). The totality of life in a large secondary school cannot be captured in a book such as this, but it does contain much information which I hope you will find useful. We offer pupils a wide range of educational experiences at Boclair, from the traditional range of subjects to the extensive programme of extra-curricular activities, school trips and visits. We hope that by offering these formal and informal learning experiences all of our pupils will have opportunities to maximise their potential, whatever their aptitudes, interests or aspirations. Session 2010-2011 saw the first steps in the formal introduction of Curriculum for Excellence, and staff have been engaged in ensuring the best possible educational experience is available for new pupils over the last seven years. Every school requires to produce an annual Improvement Plan. For Session 2018-2019 the focus is on improving the experience for all learners both in terms of attainment and achievement. Over the past 5-6 years, we have seen a steady improvement in the examination performance of our pupils, and over the past three sessions we have seen some of the best SQA results in the school’s history. Staff and pupils will be striving to maintain the high standards which have been set. -

Statement on the Proposed Renovation of Gare Du Nord, Paris
H Statement on The Proposed Renovation of Gare du Nord, Paris Society of Architectural Historians Heritage Conservation Committee Background As Paris prepares for the 2024 Summer Olympics, Gare du Nord is slated to become a major conduit of visitors travelling from the Charles de Gaulle airport to the city of Paris. As well, the station serves as the terminus of the international high-speed Eurostar rail service. The station strains under the burden of its current passenger load, and that load will increase substantially during the Olympics. An expansion and modernization of this essential Parisian transportation hub is certainly in order. Work is scheduled to begin in 2020. Issue Gare du Nord is also one of the most significant rail stations in the Western world. Designed by Jacques I. Hittorff and constructed between 1861 and 1864, Gare du Nord serves rail destinations in northern France and Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Some 222 million passengers pass through Gare du Nord in a given year, over 700,000 passengers daily, making it the busiest rail station in Europe. While functional improvements are necessary, its preservation is essential. The current renovation proposal, designed by S.N.C.F. Gares & Connextions, goes far beyond functional improvements. S.N.C.F. proposes an additional 164,000 square feet of space, and reimagines Gare du Nord as a commercial center, including a co-working space, fitness amenities, and an abundance of retail facilities. The proposed renovation focuses on R.E.R commuters, and creates a mall-like commercial development that threatens to overwhelm the historic rail station. -
Paris: Capital of Cultural Theory and Postmodernism
Paris: Capital of Cultural Theory and Postmodernism Matt Evans, Comp. Lit. Major ’08 Paris is most astounding in the early morning, when the daily clamor sleeps and one is left alone with the city’s monumental architecture and relentlessly inspiring occidental design. It is at these moments when you are left gaping at the most stunning testimony of the fatter portion of modern civilization’s aesthetic achievements. As the bakers knead away and the markets prop their first tents, you can seamlessly recall all the pre-war homage to the City of Lights: Hemmingway’s A Movable Feast, Orwell’s Down and Out, or Stein’s salon utopias. Words no longer seem necessary, for it all seems to make sense on a proto-linguistic level, which appropriately enough was one of the artistic visions of that particular time. There were countless times when I had this early morning to myself, and they remain beyond worth. However, if this is the Paris you except and desire when you go there to study, you will be disappointed. Because although Paris is most astounding in the early morning—especially for those curious travelers who despise the constant chatter of snap shots and wailing tour guides—it is only “morning” for so long. The rest of the day is quite different. For so long Paris has been a destination to consume culture and history. After all, the Parisians play their roles well if it means that they can take advantage of eager travelers and study-abroad students. But much of the city, if approached in this manner, will dishearten, and furthermore consume the countless visitors it receives daily.
