Biography or History: Richard "Rick" Michael Aloysius Boland (1953-), actor, director and writer, was born at Petrie's Crossing, Curling, Newfoundland 7 August 1953 to Jean Brown and Michael Finton Boland. At age 3 Boland moved with his family to Stephenville and then, at age 9, back to Corner Brook. He attended St. Stephen's primary school in Stephenville, the Sacred Heart elementary school in Curling. Following graduation from Regina High School in Regina, Corner Brook Boland attended Memorial University in St. John's for 2 years. While in high school, Boland became involved in a group called Youtheatre, under the direction of Jim Boyles, an Irishman trained in improvisational theatre, who, had come to Corner Brook to teach school. Youtheatre had started out as the Junior Playmakers, a branch of the Playmakers theatre company. Boland's first tour was a trip with this group to Ottawa. Following high school, he stayed in Corner Brook for a year continuing his involvement in local theatre, including directing a production in Curling, until Youtheatre ceased operation. For the next few years, Boland attended Memorial University in St. John's, where he joined the MUN Drama Society (MUDS) and first met future local performers such as Mary Walsh, Jane Dingle, and Tommy Sexton. He found he was not suited to the academic life and returned to Corner Brook for a time, until Newfoundland Travelling Theatre Company asked him to take part in a January tour of Newfoundland of one of their productions. Boland moved on to take part in the Mummers Troupe's Gros Mourn where he met Donna Butt, who was to become a big influence in his life. He performed in the annual Mummers Christmas Play and several of their other productions during the mid-70s. Following the cross-Canada tour of "What's That Got To Do With the Price of Fish?" Boland and others of the Mummers Troupe became disillusioned with the management of the troupe. He and Donna Butt and two others left the company and formed Community Stage, which existed for a short time but did not produce anything. He appeared in several films during this time and spent most of 1978 working in various capacities on the film, The Adventures of Faustus Bidgood. Then, along with Donna Butt, David Ross and three other former Mummers, he helped form the Rising Tide Theatre Company. He co-writes, directs and performs in many of their productions and acts as the Co-Artistic Director for the theatre company CornerBoys Inc. with Mary Walsh. Boland has appeared in various television productions and, in 1985, he was nominated for an ACTRA award for best actor in a television leading role for his performance in an episode of Yarns From Pigeon Inlet. Boland has appeared in other television shows such as: Up at Ours, Tales from Pigeon Inlet, Yesterday's Heroes and Hatching, Matching and Dispatching. He has also starred in numerous feature films including: Finding Mary March, The Divine Ryans, Extraordinary Visitor, The Breadmaker, The Wall, Young Triffie's Been Made Away With, and Diverted. In 2009 Boland was inducted into the Newfoundland Labrador Arts Council's Hall of Honour.
