4 One of the great privileges of this office comes in recognizing the outstanding achievements of Canadian performers and arts volunteers through the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards. These awards were established 20 years ago by my predecessor, the late Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn, and his wife, Gerda. In so doing, the Hnatyshyns were expressing their belief in the central importance of the performing arts to our lives. Our finest performing artists continually delight and entertain us, challenging our assumptions, reflecting the times in which we live, and inspiring our imaginations with a sense of possibility. Many things are possible onstage and onscreen, and this sense stays with us long after the curtain falls or the credits roll. Canada is renowned the world over as a truly great arts nation, and tonight’s gala reminds us why. My wife, Sharon, and I offer our congratulations to this year’s laureates. We are delighted to join you as we celebrate the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards’ milestone 20th anniversary. Bravo and encore to you all!
