An Academy Award winning director, Denys Arcand's films have won over 100 prestigious awards around the world. In 2003, he wrote and directed which was nominated for Best Original Screenplay and won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. In , it won three César – Best Film, Best Screenplay and Best Director; in Italy, the Donatello for Best Foreign Language Film; at the , the Best Actress and Best Screenplay awards, amongst many. In 1989, Denys Arcand directed the powerful of (Jesus de Montréal) which won the Jury’s Grand Prize and the Ecumenical Prize in Cannes. The film also earned 12 in addition of being nominated for the Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category. In 2007, his film Days of Darkness (L’Âge Des ténèbres) was the Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival for Closing Night, a very special evening as it was the 60th birthday of the festival. His film The Decline of the American Empire (Le déclin de l’empire américain) won the International Critic’s Prize (FIPRESCI) (in Cannes) as well as an Oscar nomination as Best Foreign Language Film. In addition to his work as a filmmaker, Denys Arcand has published several articles and a book entitled Euchariste Moisan (2013). In 2011, he created, with artist Adad Hannah, an installation called SAFARI for the Big Bang Exposition celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

A lover of , he will direct in 2015 the Zémire and Azor, with Les Violons du Roy and the students of the school of Opera of Montreal. Denys Arcand is Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters (France); Companion of the Order of and Knight of the National Order of . He is also a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

ÉRIC BRUNEAU Luc ÉRIC BRUNEAU graduated from l'École nationale de théâtre du Canada in 2006. His career is already well started. We have seen him on TV in some popular series like Annie et ses hommes, Musée Éden and Tu m’aimes- tu ? Presently, we can see him in the new detective series Mensonges. His interpretation of Sylvain Régimbald in Toute la vérité has earned him several nominations for the Prix Artis du meilleur rôle masculin dans une télésérie québécoise. On stage, he was part of prestigious plays including Christine, la reine- garçon, Equus, Élisabeth, roi d’Angleterre, Un simple soldat, Tom à la ferme and more recently on Les liaisons dangereuses. On big screen, he played in films like Les Etats-Unis d’Albert and Coteau Rouge (A. Forcier), Les pieds dans le vide (M. Woolfe), Gerry (A. Desrochers) and Les Amours Imaginaires (X. Dolan).

MÉLANIE THIERRY Stéphanie Mélanie Thierry began on big screen in 's film called La légende du pianiste sur l'océan. The very same year, she will be recognized due to her role of Esmeralda in Patrick Timsit's Quasimodo d'el . Thereafter she will appear in several major projects both on big screen (15 août, Les écorchés, Pardonnez-moi, Chrysalis, Babylon AD...) and small screen (Merci, les enfants vont bien; Fête de famille). She also delivers impressive performances on stage in plays like Le vieux juif blonde (nominated to the Molières « Révélation théâtrale ») and ''Baby Doll'' which earned her nomination to the Molières «Meilleure Actrice». Her career took a new twist in Philipe Godeau's film Le Dernier pour la route: her performance is awarded the César for Most Promising Actress in 2010. Thereafter she played the inaccessible Charlotte Desrives in L'Autre Dumas and 's Princess of Montpensier. The film will be selected for the official competition at Cannes 2010. Another major figure of French Cinema, André Téchiné, placed her along with André Dussollier and Carole Bouquet in Impardonnables, presented at the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes in 2011. She invests herself in the first feature film of Stéphane Cazes (Ombline) and Hugo Gelin (Comme Des Frères). In 2013 she starred in Diane Kurys's last film called Pour une femme. Finally, she was on the Official Selection in Venice in September 2013 along with the mythic director Terry Gilliam for his latest film "The Zero Theorem" in which her main partner is Christoph Waltz.

MELANIE MERKOSKY Lindsay A true triple threat, Canadian actress Melanie Merkosky has been performing professionally as an actress, singer and dancer since the age of twelve in film, television and on stages around the world. Melanie is currently shooting a recurring role on The Strain, the new FX series from Guillermo De Toro. Residing in Los Angeles, and studying under master acting teacher Anthony Meindl, Melanie has developed a repertoire of work on both sides of the border. She continues to support and maintain strong ties to the film industry in Canada. Melanie grew up singing and dancing on scholarship with the Young Canadians School of Performing Arts. She trained classically as a singer and dancer through the Royal Conservatory of Music and the Royal Academy of Dance examinations, respectively. Ms. Merkosky has performed across in nationally acclaimed theaters and Festivals including Anne of Green Gables at the Charlottetown Festival and the First National Tour of the smash musical Mamma Mia!. Melanie has appeared in numerous film and television series including Runaway for the CW, the American Pie franchise and the award winning Canadian series Slings & Arrows. She's also caught significant attention and acclaim as a pioneer of the online entertainment movement as the star of notable web series including Lonelygirl15 and Harper's Globe for CBS. Melanie was nominated for Best Lead Actress in a drama at the second annual International Academy of Web Television (IAWTV) Awards for her work in the high profile American web series Continuum.

MARIE-JOSÉE CROZE Isabelle In 1999, filmmaker decided to assign the lead role of Maelstöm to Marie-Josée Croze, a French- Canadian actress who has distinguished herself through some popular films and series. This film had a major impact on her career whether it is in the role of a rebellious young woman in 's Ararat or in the many interpretation awards that she won at various festivals across the world. Author Cinema now seems to be the path of the actress. Denys Arcand's fabulous film The Barbarian Invasions gives her the opportunity to play a drug addict character that the jury of The Cannes Film Festival noticed and for which she won Best Actress in 2003. She then succeeds in French Cinema with films such as ’s Ne le dis à personne, Zabou Breitman’s Je l'aimais, Tony Gatlif’s Liberté, Jean Becker’s Deux jours à tuer and Nicole Garcia’s Un balcon sur la mer. Across the Atlantic, who loved her in Steven Spielberg’s Munich offers her a very pretty speech pathologist role in Le Scaphandre et le papillon. At the end of 2013, we admired Marie- Josée Croze in Mensonges d’États, a Xavier Daugreilh’s creation, directed by Nicolas Briançon and produced in the Madelaine Theater in Paris. In 2014, we will see her in several films like John Mc Donagh’s Calvary (selected at Sundance & Berlin), Tala Hadid’s The Narrow Frame of Midnight, ’s Every Thing Wil Be Fine, and Mathieu Delaporte’s Un illustre Inconnu.

7 AN EYE FOR BEAUTY | PRESS KIT MATHIEU QUESNEL Nicolas Mathieu graduated from the Conservatory of Dramatic Art of Montreal in 2006. Since then he has accumulated projects. On stage he is part of various production such as Au Champ de Mars from Théâtre de la Manufacture, L'Assassinat du président from Théâtre du Futur, L'Obsession de la beauté from Lab87, and more recently Les Flâneurs célestes. On TV we saw him in 30 Vies, La Galère, Tout sur moi, Les Rescapés and Penthouse 5-0. He is also part of the SNL - Québec cast. In addition, he wrote and starred in several projects and therefore improved his acting abilities. On screen, he plays the leading role of Eric in Le vrai du faux from director Émile Gaudreault. Charismatic, he is, without a doubt, one of the multitask of the next generation with a bright future ahead of him.

GENEVIÈVE BOIVIN-ROUSSY Mélissa Since graduating in 2009 from the Lionel-Groulx College program specializing in performance, Geneviève Boivin-Roussy has accumulated many artistic experiences. An artist-painter that holds dear the multidisciplinary aspect of art, she is a founding member of Les Garçonnes, a company where performing arts, media arts, visual arts, music as well as literature all come together. On television, she can be seen as Gloria O’Hara in the series O’, directed by Éric Tessier and Frédérik D’Amours, which has been on the air since 2012 on TVA. We can also appreciate her painting skills on the series since it features many of her own paintings. She has also participated in multiple short films including Chef de meute, which was part of the Official Selection of Short Films in 2012 at the Cannes Film Festival. On the silver screen, it was hard not to notice her outstanding acting and presence last year in Sarah préfère la course by Chloé Robichaud, also seen at Cannes in the category. In 2011, among other parts, she played the role of a junkie in the latest Fuica brothers’ movie La Run. As the future seems very promising for Geneviève Boivin-Roussy, it will not be surprising to continue seeing her on screen in roles as interesting and diverse as ever.

MAGALIE LÉPINE-BLONDEAU Karine Graduated from the National Theater School of Canada in 2005, Magalie Lépine-Blondeau has distinguish herself as a host in Fan Club, a youth program for which she won the Gémeaux for best youth television host in 2011. Very versatile, she has no hesitation to participate in different projects from various artistic fields. Thus we can admire her on both television (for her roles in C.A., 19-2 and Tu m’aimes- tu?) and cinema (in films such as and Bo$$é). She also does a lot of dubbing, lending her voice to more than one hundred films and series. Loyal to her first love, she is on stage for several theatrical productions like Christine la reine-garçon, Le diable rouge, Les liaisons dangereuses and Cyrano de Bergerac. Magalie Lépine-Blondeau is, without a doubt, a rising star.

Michel Forget Roger Awesome , director accumulating success, Michel Forget succeeds in everything he undertakes. His career began in theaters in 1973. Very versatile, he quickly became a must, performing on the stages of major theater companies to the delight of audiences and critics. Thereafter, television offers him unforgettable roles in cult series such as Du Tac au Tac (Mario Duquette), Lance et Compte (Gilles Guilbeault), Sous un Ciel Variable (Clément Rousseau), Emma (Maurice Michel), Les Machos (Julien Bordeleau), Le Dernier Chapitre (Bill Guénette), Virginie (René Ouellette) and lately Unité 9 (Adrien Petit). 9 AN EYE FOR BEAUTY | PRESS KIT Yves Jacques Museum Director His professional journey led him from his native to Montreal, and then drove him to Paris, where he’s been playing since, on stage as well as in movies. The Decline of the American Empire (D. Arcand) confirmed his talent, and his renown grew steadily with movies and theatrical productions in France and in Quebec. He met again with his fellow actors of The Decline in The Barbarian Invasions (D. Arcand) and he played in La petite Lily (C. Miller), Un homme et son péché (C. Binamé), the historical epic by , Napoléon, La veuve de Saint-Pierre (P. Leconte), La dernière fugue (L. Pool), Cabotins (A. Desrochers), Voyez comme ils dansent (C.Miller) and French Immersion (K. Tierney), among others. He is touring the world with ’s play The Far Side of the Moon and The Andersen Project, in its French and English versions, with which he’s charming European, North- American, Japanese and Asian audiences. The Montreal audience welcomed is performance in May 2003 at the TNM. More recently in Paris Odéon Theatre and European tour, he played the role of Dubois in Marivaux's Fausses Confidences. In 2008, he was Samuel de Champlain as he took part of the Québec City's 400th anniversary celebration. He is distributing the film by , Laurence Anyways and he is playing alongside of Nicole Kidman and Tim Roth in the Olivier Dahan’s recent film Grace of Monaco. Yves Jacques was appointed Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters, as awarded by the Ministry of Culture and Communication of France, in February 2001 and is an Officer of the since the end of 2009 for its achievements as an actor in theater, television and film, here and abroad.

Juana Acosta Juana Juana Acosta was born in Cali (Colombia) in 1976. After college, she joined the University of the Andes in Bogota, where she studied fine arts. In 2000, she decided to go to Madrid to complete her training at the School of Dramatic Art Juan Carlos Corazza. She moved there to complete his studies in interpretation and slowly start her acting career in Spain. Her first role was in the Spanish TV series Javier ya no live solo. She then played in several series such as El comisario, Policias, Genesis, Central Hospital, and Hispania. Juana was rewarded for her role in Crematorium and received the award for Best Supporting Actress by the "Unión de Actores". In 2010, she took part of the cast of Carlos by , an award-winning mini-series that won numerous awards including the Golden Globe for Best TV Drama. Her film career took off and she had many roles on the big screen between Colombia, France and Spain. She took part, among others, in the movie Slam by Miguel Martí, Bienvenido a casa by David Trueba, A golpes by Juan Vicente Córdoba and Una hora más en Canarias by David Serrano. In 2011, she obtained a leading role in the Colombian movie El cartel de los Sapos by Carlos Moreno, which has a great success with critics and Box office. In 2013, Juana played in the series Familia and La Dama Velata (Italian coproduction) as

Johanne-Marie Tremblay Élise Johanne-Marie Tremblay is a well-known actress in the province of Quebec. Her career reflects many collaborations with great directors to whom she is very loyal. She played for the first time in 1988 in Lea Pool's À corps perdu. In 1989, she started to collaborate with Denys Arcand in as Constance, for which she earned a nomination to the Genie Awards. She subsequently did many projects with the same director such as Les lettres de la Religieuse Portugaise (on stage), The Barbarian Invasions and Days of Darkness (on big screen). She was also part of Denis Villeneuve's Polytechnique, Robin Aubert's L’origine d’un cri and Sebastien Pilote's Le Démantèlement. On small screen she distinguished herself with 's classics such as Les filles de Caleb, Ces enfants d’ailleurs, Nouvelle-France and Sans elle. Johanne-Marie Tremblay was also part of soap like Mon meilleur ennemi, Le volcan tranquille and Asbetos. Lately she played in La Galère and Toute la vérité. Johanne-Marie Tremblay was also in the distribution of the successfull Tu te souviendras de moi played at La Licorne this year.

President of Cinémaginaire that she founded in 1988 with Daniel Louis, Denise Robert has made her mark in the Quebec and Canadian film industry. She produced numerous world-renowned films, including Denys Arcand’s The Barbarian Invasions, which won the Oscar for Best Film in a Foreign Language, three Césars and more than forty other awards around the world, Robert Lepage’s , which opened the Director’s Fortnight in Cannes; Paul Arcand’s Driving to the Edge about young adults who live their life in the fast lane, as well as many others. She also co-produced the play Les 39 marches, adapted from the novel piece The 39 Steps by John Buchan and the eponymous film of by Patrick Barlow. She also produced the 3 seasons of Le petit Monde de Laura Cadieux, directed by and inspired from one of ’s book. Denise Robert is currently working on the next Emile Gaudreault’s film Le vrai du faux, Léa Pool's documentary Waiting for Mommy and another one by Anne-Dauphine Julliand, author of Deux petits pas sur le sable mouillé. Several other projects are also in development. She is producing a new TV series, La théorie du K.O., that will be her first collaboration with Guillaume Lespérance.

Denise Robert is a member of the prestigious Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and the Académie des arts et techniques du cinéma (César). Her work was recognized with the grade of Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters given to her by the Minister of Cultural Affairs of France for her influential role in the promotion of French culture throughout the world. NATHALIE MOLIAVKO-VISOTZKY Director of Photography Initiated in her adolescence to the New Wave cinema, she discovered her passion for image and light through John Casavetes’s films. Her first film as a Director of Photography (Guylaine Dionne’s Les fantômes des 3 Madeleine) was selected for the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes in 2000(shot on 35mmm black and white !). She was nominated for the Jutra as Best Director of Photography for this film and for Nathalie Saint-Pierre’s Catimini and Ma voisine dans le ska. She was the second unit DOP for Denys Arcand’s The Barbarian Invasions. She won the Gémeaux for Best Director of Photography for the series Nos étés. Helen Doyle’s Dans un océan d’images…, her last documentary as a Director of Photography, won the Best Canadian Film at FIFA 2013.

PATRICE BENGLE Production Designer Working in the film industry since 1976, Patrice Bengle is an art director and a highly talented Visual Designer. He made his debut as a props man on several productions on both small and big screen before taking control of the Artistic Direction. During his career, he has worked on over 90 feature films and prestigious television series which include L'âge de la machine, Au clair de la lune, Maria Chapdelaine, Jésus de Montréal, Le violon rouge, The Barbarian Invasions, L'audition, Maman est chez le coiffeur and Coteau rouge.

MARIE-CHANTALE VAILLANCOURT Costumes For the past 25 years Marie-Chantale Vaillancourt has designed costumes for a large number of theatre, dance, opera and film productions. Her work, which harmoniously combines the two diciplines she has specialized in, fashion design as well as costume design, has been seen around the world. Since her beginnings, she has collaborated closely with many talented directors; Claude Poissant, Alice Ronfard, Brigitte Haentjens, René Richard Cyr, Serge Denoncourt, Lorraine Pintal, Michel Laprise… Since 1989 she has worked particularly closely with world-renowned writer, actor and director Robert Lepage, creating the costumes for many of his productions. Her work in dance includes collaborations with renowned artists such as Estelle Clareton, Lydia Wagerer, Jocelyne Montpetit and Harold Rhéaume. As a versatile designer she collaborated on projects in different performance areas bringing her creative flair to Kooza for Cirque du Soleil, Paradis Perdu by Dominic Champagne, Mutantes by and Safari, a video installation by Adad Hannah and Denys Arcand for Big Bang an innovating multidisciplinary exhibition organized by Montreal Museum of Fine Arts for his 150e anniversary. For Cirque du Soleil she brings her collaboration on many special events such as Microsoft Kinnect launch in Los Angeles, Les Chemins invisibles/Le Royaume de tôle in Quebec City and The Light at Mandalay bay in Las Vegas. Through the years Marie Chantale has won many major Canadian awards for her work, including two Masques de la Conception des Costumes, in 1995 and 2005. In 2012, she also received the achievement in costume design/meilleurs costumes for the movie Funkytown at the 32nd Genies Awards. Marie-Chantale is a costume design and character consultant with Ubisoft on Child of Light a new digital game which is due in 2014. In the last part of 2013 she signed the costumes for « Le Balcon » a theatreplay by Jean Genêt, directed by René-Richard Cyr for Le Théâtre du Nouveau Monde in Montreal. She is currently creating « Signature Characters » for the opening of newly refresh Casino of Montreal.

ISABELLE DEDIEU Editor ISABELLE DEDIEU is an experienced film editor who has made her mark in the industry. Beginning her career with the film Thérèse, for which she won the César Award for Best Editing in 1987, she made a lot of successful projects on both small and big screen. She collaborated with filmmakers from around the world. We therefore find her name behind films like Jésus de Montréal, Un été après l'autre, Terminales, Mauvais genres, The Barbarian Invasions, Aurore, Days of Darkness, Le temps de la kermesse, Il a plu sur le grand paysage and soon behind Manuel Pradal’s Tom le cancre. She also participated in several television projects including Le Miroir de l'eau, Notable donc coupable, Le repaire de la vouivre and, recently, Edwin Baily’s Coups sur coups and Le silence des églises, two films for television.

15 AN EYE FOR BEAUTY | PRESS KIT MARIE-CLAUDE GAGNÉ Sound Creation Marie-Claude Gagné began as an Assistant Sound Editor in 1985, working on films such as Jean Beaudin’s Le Matou and Yves Simoneau’s Pouvoir Intime. The very next year, she takes care of sound editing of a few films. Her talent was quickly noticed and she became a popular Sound Designer. Her most popular achievements as a Sound Designer included Denys Arcand’s Joyeux Calvaire, Philippe Baylaucq’s Mystère B, Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby’s When the Day Breaks, Dan Bigras’s Le ring intérieur, Émile Gaudreault’s Mambo Italiano and Denys Arcand’s The Barbarian Invasions. She won the Jutra for Best Sound in 2005 for Ma vie en cinémascope and in 2007 for Un dimanche à Kigali. The very same year she won the Gémeaux and Gemini for Best Sound for the documentary called La Grande traversé. In 2007-2008, in addition of achieving Yves Desgagnés’s Idole instantanée soundtrack, Marie-Claude focused on two projects: Émile Gaudreault’s Surviving my Mother and Denys Arcand’s Days of Darkness. In 2009, she worked on Émile Gaudreault’s Father and Guns and Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt’s Oscar et la dame rose. In 2010 she participated in Luc Dionne’s The Child Prodigy, Yves Simoneau’s Assassin’s creed Lineage, Louis Bélanger’s Route 132, Stephen Hopkins’s Thorne : Sleepyhead, Alain Desrosiers’s Gerry, Émile Gaudreault’s A Sens of Humour and Cédric Kahn’s Une vie meilleure. In 2012, she did the sound design of Paul Arcand’s last documentary called Driving to the Edge and she worked on Luc Dionne’s Omertà. In 2013, she worked on Guillaume Sylvestre’ 1er Amour. Wherever she goes, Marie-Claude knows how to create an atmosphere!

PIERRE-PHILIPPE CÔTÉ Music Pierre-Philippe Côté studied bass at the Conservatory of Music in Montreal. The musician accompanied several artists such as Jorane, Elisapie, Navet Confit, Ariane Moffatt, Tomas Jensen, and Lewis Furey. Pilou, surname given to him by his peers, is also a singer-songwriter. As a member of Mimosa, the group won first place at Les Francouvertes in 2007. Since then, he worked with the band Elektrik Bones as a songwriter, composer, musician and singer. In addition to his multiple collaborations, Pilou has also been recruited by Maxime Morin, DJ Champion for this second and third albums, Resistance and °1. Pierre-Philippe has participated in the recording of several tracks on both albums and continues touring with the artist around the world, singing loud and clear that he’s “Alive Again”… ". While creatively exploring with colleagues on various projects, Pilou discovered his fascination for producing. Pilou has since then produced many albums such as Mammifères/Moran, Chasing Lydie/Marie-Jo Thério, Boarding Gate/Ines Talbi, Hisser Haut/David Giguère, Territoires/Sébastien Lacombe and Philippe Brach’s latest album coming out in 2014. The young producer is also working on his solo project, by the name of Peter Henry Phillips, also coming out in 2014.

PIERRE THIBAULT Architect Through environmentally incisive responses to the needs of clients in urban, regional and Wilder Ness settings, Pierre Thibault’s practice has been distinguishing itself since 1988.
