Opening Remarks Lawrence Adams was Amy Bowring’s revered mentor; his example has guided and encouraged her to tackle, with determination and purpose, assorted pursuits in dance. As Research Co-ordinator at Dance Collection Danse, Amy has been working with the organization, on contract, for five years. Many of you may know Amy through some of the projects in which she has been involved, and also as founder of the Society for Canadian Dance Studies which can boast a solid and active membership under her direction. First introduced to Dance Collection Danse in 1993 as a student undertaking research through York University’s dance programme, Amy’s passion for dance history triggered her interest in becoming seriously involved with DCD. After completing her BA in Fine Arts, Amy earned an MA in journalism from the University of Western Ontario. She is copy editor for The Dance Current magazine, has written various dance articles and encyclo- pedia entries, and is researching and writing a book on the 1948-1954 Canadian Ballet Festival phenomenon. And, to add more ingredients to the mix, she is a whiz at the computer! As Dance Collection Danse undergoes its planning process for upcoming and future activities, you can expect to see Amy’s involvement with DCD increase. To work with someone who is dedicated and skilled is a blessing, but to have someone on board who is also mindful and gracious is the best. RÉSUMÉ Lorsque l'on parle du mouvement automatiste, on pense surtout aux moyens d'expression artistique reliés à la peinture et à la littérature. La danse trop long temps oubliée par les historiens, tint pourtant une place importante dans l'univers automatiste. Françoise Sullivan, Françoise Riopelle et Jeanne Renaud, toutes trois si gnataires du Refus global, sont les noms que l'on associe à la danse dite automatiste. Ce mémoire traite de l'activité d'une de ces trois danseuses, Françoise Sul livan, qui fut l'une des pionnières de la danse moderne du Québec. Nous avons tenté de brosser un tableau de l'activité artistique, dans le do maine de la danse, de Françoise Sullivan entre 1940 et 1950. Cette reconstitution est fondée sur les témoignages recueillis auprès de Françoise Sullivan elle-même ainsi que sur ceux de Jeanne Renaud et de jeunes dan seurs qui ont interprété les oeuvres présentes et passées de l'artiste. Notre travail se divise en deux parties. La première traite du mouvement automatiste, et la deuxième de l'activité chorégraphique de Françoise Sullivan pen dant la période qui fait l'objet de notre étude. History of the Company
I am trying to develop dance that is anchored in everyday life, without losing its poetry. I want to concentrate on what is at the very heart of life in our society. HISTORY OF THE COMPANY “Since dance has such great evocative and expressive power, creating a new work always requires much reflection and a thorough development of ideas. As a form of expression, dance may have a long history—yet each performance is necessarily of the moment. It follows that dance must be constantly renewed. To meet this challenge, I enter into a dialogue with the body. The more it speaks to me, the more I understand the full scope of what it has to say. This is how a vocabulary of movement can be developed, and it is precisely what I love most about choreography: being able to develop a language that allows me to investigate the body and reveal some of its deepest secrets.” Sylvain Émard Sylvain Émard first distinguished himself as a dancer working with renowned choreographers such as Jean- Pierre Perreault, Jo Lechay, Jeanne Renaud, Louise Bédard and Daniel Léveillé before he formed his own company in 1990. Here his signature style soon emerged. Émard is recognized for his complex and refined choreographic vocabulary. His approach draws on the kinaesthetic power of dance by highlighting the inherent intelligence of the body. His repertoire now includes over thirty original pieces that have had a resounding impact all over the world. Since its foundation, Sylvain Émard Danse has continually evolved. During its first years, artistic director and choreographer Sylvain Émard created mainly solo works such as Ozone, Ozone (1987) and L’Imposture des sens (1988). -

2013 KEYNOTE PANELS & WORKSHOPS KEYNOTE ADDRESS - MICHAEL CALDWELL Michael Caldwell is a Toronto-based choreographer/performer. A graduate of The School of Toronto Dance Theatre, he has interpreted roles for many of Canada’s esteemed dance creators and companies, including Peggy Baker, Sylvie Bouchard, Danny Grossman, Guillaume Côté, Maxine Heppner, Sasha Ivanoch- ko, James Kudelka, Tedd Robinson, Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie, Corpus Dance Projects, Dusk Dances, and Kahawi Dance Theatre, among others, and has performed across Canada and the United States, in Europe, Asia, and Australia. Michael was an interpreter at Le Group Dance Lab, studying with the iconic Peter Boneham. He has also initiated a solo-commissioning project, performing in the work of established choreographers – Conrad Alexandrowicz, Danny Grossman, and Karen Jamieson. Michael is quickly emerging as a skilled, and critically acclaimed choreographer. His recent works include: Ash Unravel, an acclaimed solo based on his journey to Vietnam, The Horologium, a whimsical group piece created for Dusk Dances, Boogie Back, a community work for non-dancers in Porch View Dances, and Mary, a dynamic new solo for Stéphanie Tremblay Abudo. With a bachelor’s degree in film and art history from Syracuse University, Michael seeks to incorporate cinematic sensibilities in all his work. Upcoming, Michael will begin creation on a new group choreography, based on loneliness and isolation. Michael’s teaching experience varies from professional level contemporary technique classes to inten- sive workshops for youth, the elderly, and the disabled. He has taught at various locations in Toronto, and across Ontario. He currently sits on the board of The School of Toronto Dance Theatre, is the chair of the Canadian Alli- ance of Dance Artists - Ontario Chapter, and is a Metcalf Foundation Performing Arts Intern for Moon- horse Dance Theatre/Claudia Moore, specifically for Older & Reckless.
