(esp. 27-28 and 33), 4.10.99-100,Pont. 1.2.144-145, 1.6.21ff., 2.2.55-60, 2.9.71 ff. (esp. 72 est tarnenhù grauior noxaf atenda mihi), and 3.1.147 (neefactum defendemeum: mala causa silenda est, wherefactum seems to refer to the error),3.3.71 ff. (esp. 73 ff, where Cupid tells Ovid that the error,described as quidquid id est, should not be spoken of). Silence is a major motif of the exile corpus: cf., e.g., Tr.3.5.47 ff. (Ovid's offence was not connected with speech), Ovid's silence about the identity of the addressees of the Tristia (for which, see Casali 1997, 84), Pont. 4.3.1 (Conquerarantaceami) and possibly 416.35 ff, where Ovid falls silent about love eleg- ists working in Rome, ostensibly because their work is unpublished, but potentially for more sinister reasons. If we aeeept that the double Heroides are exilic (see, e.g., Reeve 1973,330, n. 1, Barchiesi 1995, 325, and 1996), and that thè first couplet of Her. 16 is spurious, they open with a question that resonates within the exile corpus:Eloquar, an flammae non est opus indice notte, I et plus quam uellem iam meus extat amorì Cf. too Her.16.63 (fas uidissefuit,fas sit mihi uisareferre).At Fast. 4.81-85laments on Ovid's exilic circumstances are broken off in mid-flow at 83-85thus: sed suppnme, Musa, querellas!I non tibi sunt maestàsacra canendalyra. I quonon liuoraditi (I follow Stephen Heyworth's suggestion that the opening of line 85 should be read with what précèdes as well as what follows it). 'Althoughtwo charges ruined me, a poem and a mistake, I must be silent on thè guilt of one deed: for I am too insignificantto renew your wounds, Caesar, to whom it is much too much to hâve caused grief once. The other part remains whereby, having composed a disgraceful poem, I am accused of being the teacher of obscène adultery/ (Tristia 2.207-212) The poem, as the end of this passage makes clear, is the Ars amatoria,a handbook on how to seduce members of the opposite sex, which, at least in spirit, contravened Augustus' anti-adultery législation of 18 bc. Much of Tristia2, a 'letter' addressedto Au- gustus which attempts a sustained apologiàfor the poet and his poetry, is concerned with defending the Ars from the charge that it encouraged adultery,thereby securing the identificationof it as the offending poem. The error,however, has proved more elusive than the carmen:Ovid never explicitly reveals what his mistake might have been.2 One ingenious way of 'solving' the mystery of the erroris to Interpretcarmen et error(2.207) as an instance of hendiadys («the mistake consisting of a poem»: i.e., the Ars);3the close association between arimenand carmenat Tr.2.207 and in the Ars itself (inque meonüilum carminé arimen erit = «in what I sing there will be no sin», Ars1.34) may provide some support for this interprétation,as may Tr.2.209-210, where the Statementthat it is too much to have Hollis' conjecturefacto as we probablyneed hère a référenceto Ovid'scomposition of the Ars. 1 obscenimay alludeto the adulterymimes performedon stage (cf. scaenica...adul- teria,Tr. 2.514), given the etymology ob-sc(a)enus(for which, see Maltby1991, 421, and Ars2.584). Ovid may therebyanticipate his later commenteon Augustus'promotion of the (adultery)mime, suggestingthat the Arsand Augustus'patronage of mimes have had similareffects: see below. 2 Ovid'scontradictory Statements about the relativeimportance of the carmenet errorin causinghis downfallare of little value: contrast,e.g., Pont.3.3.71-72 (Cupid, reproachedby Ovid for contributingto Ovid'sdownfall as patronof the Ars,daims thataliud [se. the error]harmed Ovid magis[se. thanthe Ars]with Tr.5.12.45-46 (where Ovid informs the Muses that uos estis nostraemaxima causa fiigae, 46). Tr.4.1.25-26 (where Ovid says of his Muse cummecum iuncti criminis acta rea est) is probablya référenceto Ovid and the Muse'sjoint responsibilityfor the Ars.Ovid's claim that he must hide the errorby talkingabout the Arsinstead (Pont. 2.9.71-76) is on a par with the tacticsof Tristia2, and need not that the errorwas the graveroffence. 3 imply Forthis view, see, e.g., Thibault1964, 36-37, and Nagle 1995,3 (who interpretethe carmenas the Met.; a perverseview, given the specificityof the chargeagainst the Ars at Tr. 2.211-112). Ovid,the error and thè thèmeof sightin Tristia2 65 offended Augustus semel («once» 210l) perhaps wittily 'corrects' duo crimina,alluding to the Ars as the sole cause of the pnnceps displeasure.2Nevertheless, duo (207), altenus (208) and alterapars (211)ail suggest two charges, and it is important for the rhetoric of Ovid's exile corpus that the Ars is not wholly responsible for Ovid's downfall. I prefer to keep the carmenet errordistinct, not least because, if Ovid was punished for his Ars alone, the interval of up to a decade between the time of the offence (the publica- tion of the offending carmen)and the punishment of that 'crime' looks inexplicable;3it seems likely that the errorwas the more ré- cent offence and thus thè immediate precipitatingfactor in Ovid's downfall.4 Despite never revealingdirectly what the mistakewas, Ovid does revealcertain things about the nature of the error,the most tantalis- 5 ing of which is that it was something he saw. This has led to a flood of biographicalspéculation about what exactly it might hâve been that Ovid saw, which still shows no sign of abating.6To speculate about 'what Ovid saw' is to play thè poet's game: Ovid'spraetexitio of the errorserves to draw attention to, rather than minimize, it. 1 This is parallelto Ovid's question at Tr.2.4 (an semel est poenamcommeruisse parumi= «or is it too small a matterto hâve earnedpunishment once?»). Note how, at thè startof Tr.2 (e.g. 2.2 ingenioperii qui miser ipse meo = «I who perishedwretch- edly through my poetic talent»),Ovid states that his downfallwas due only to his poetry, with no mention of the erroruntil 103ff. I would attributethis concentration on the carmento the exclusionof the errorto the fact that the Arsis open for discus- sion and the erroris not, ratherthan seeing this as an indicationthat the erroris to be identifiedwith the carmen. 2 Similarly, Tr. 2.121-122(commit haec igitur Musis accepta sub uno I sed non exiguo criminelapsa domus - «Thereforethis house pleasingto the Museshas fallen,having collapsed/ throughone fault - but not a small one») may hint that Ovid'sonly of- fence was the three books of the Ars,which were far from a small matter.However, I preferto follow Luck1977 in readingsub uno ... criminein conjunctionwith the una proceUa(Tr. 2.100) which has overwhelmedOvid; Ovid daims, not altogethertruth- fully,that only his récentlapse has led to his house's collapse,with impliedcriticism of Augustus.

Phil. thesis at Oxford. She thanks her supervisors, Stephen Heyworth and Adrian Hollis, for their generosity and kindness. Dr Ingleheart has written an introduction, in which she explains the literary background to Ovid’s Tristia. She also adds a note on the manuscript tradition of the text: cf. page 28. The Latin text is then printed together with an English translation. I would now like to make the following observations on the text of the poem. On page 74 I. mentions Teuthras. Propertius refers to Teuthras at 1,11,11. I have recently argued that we should print the variant reading Titanis instead of the reading Teuthrantis in this passage. For the variant Titanis cf. Burman’s note ad loc. For Titanis = Circe cf. Ovid, Met. 14,14. Cf. moreover, my Studies in the Text of Propertius (Athens 2002), page 22. Burman used manuscripts in order to correct the text of Propertius: cf. my Studies, page 16 (note 3). On page 89 I. notes that Ovid “plays on the etymology of Augustus’ name.” Propertius was also interested in etymologies: cf. my Studies, page 78. At 2,34,53 Propertius mentions Stygias ... erumnas (“Stygian cares”, i.e. death). The variant reading erumnas was preserved for us by Burman.     ROBIN NISBET Robin George Murdoch Nisbet 1925–2013 ROBIN NISBET (known professionally as R. G. M. Nisbet), who was born in Glasgow on 21 May 1925, was one of the most distinguished and influential Latin scholars of his time. He studied at the University of Glasgow before going to Balliol College, Oxford, in 1947, for a second BA. On graduation in 1951, he moved at once as a Junior Research Fellow to Corpus Christi College (CCC), Oxford, where he became a Tutorial Fellow in 1952, and then moved across to the Corpus Christi Chair of Latin in 1970. He retired in 1992 and was (unusually) elected to an Honorary Fellowship at Corpus; other distinctions included an Honorary Fellowship at Balliol (1989), a Fellowship of the British Academy (1967) and its Kenyon Medal (1997). Nisbet himself composed an autobiographical memoir, a paper deliv- ered to the Oxford Philological Society at Corpus on 20 May 2005, the day before his eightieth birthday, entitled ‘A Retrospect’ (cited hereafter as AR). Its terse and witty texture, elegantly written with significant and often ironic asides on various issues, gives a good impression of its author’s style of public discourse.1 Its account of his family background is worth quotation: I had the good fortune to be born into a classical family, where in 1936 the death of Housman was mentioned at the breakfast-table, the first time I heard the name. GODZICH SUBMITTED TO SCRIPPS COLLEGE IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF ARTS PROFESSOR FINKELPEARL PROFESSOR CHINN APRIL 25, 2014 ABSTRACT: Augustan propaganda surrounding Apollo provided the perfect literary device through which Augustan poets could express their sentiments about the new regime. Augustus transformed Apollo from a relatively insignificant god in the Roman pantheon to his own multi- faceted god whose various attributes were meant to legitimize his new position within the Roman Empire. In this thesis I discuss how Ovid uses Augustus’ political affiliation with Apollo to comment on Augustan marriage legislation in two of his texts. In Ovid’s manual on seduction, the Ars Amatoria, he denies poetic inspiration from Apollo at the beginning of his work, preferring instead to draw from his own experiences.
