HIV TREATMENT WORKS

I refuse to let HIV get in the way of my busy schedule. I even have a cell phone app that reminds me to take my HIV meds. When I’m not working, I keep busy with boot camp, swimming, weight lifting, meditation, traveling and — oh yeah — karaoke. I know that the more control I have over my HIV, the less power I give to the virus. I take control by taking my HIV medication every day.

he 30th Annual AIDS Walk Miami will take place on April 22, and part of its success comes from the grassroots efforts of local community leaders and organizations. Olympic Medalist GUS KENWORTHY From Top Freeskier to Miami Beach Gay Pride Grand Marshal By Rafa Carvajal

s a proud sponsor of the 10th anniversary Miami Beach Gay Pride, Wire Magazine sat down with Olympic silver medalist Gus Kenworthy, this year's Pride Grand Marshal, to chat about his life, career, be- ing gay, and leading this year's Pride parade.

Gus frst represented the United States in the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia as a 23-year-old athlete, and proudly won the silver medal in slopestyle. Gus and his boyfriend Mat- thew Wilkas also made headlines around the world during the recent 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, when Matthew gave Gus a good-luck kiss before a qualifying run that was caught on camera by NBC and carried the world over. Besides his Olympic success, Gus has reached the top of his sport and earned seven World titles and fve X Games Medals. He is indeed one of the top freeskiers in the world, and one of a handful of athletes to reg- ularly earn top honors in slopestyle, halfpipe and big air events. In 2015, Gus came out as a proud gay man on the cover of ESPN The Magazine, garnering enthusiastic support glob- ally, and making him even more marketable for endorsement deals than before.

Rafa Carvajal: What are you most looking forward to about being the 10-year anniversa- ry Miami Beach Gay Pride Grand Marshal? RC: What does Pride mean to you, and why do - GUS KENWORTHY you think it is so important to celebrate Pride? GK: Pride means owning who you are and wanting to share yourself with the world. I think it's important to celebrate Pride because for so long, and still today in many parts of the world, LGBTQ people have been forced to live in fear for their safety and being "out" and "proud" weren't even options.

RC: Were you ever worried that being openly gay would have a negative effect on your ca- reer, and why? GK: Yes. Unlike other sports, I don't get paid to ski by a team or federation. My income is based off endorsement deals and those are gotten based off my "image" and presence in the sport. I was worried that being out would isolate me or make me less marketable. In fact, it's done just the opposite.

RC: Why do you think it is so important to live your life as an openly gay athlete? GK: Because that is who I am. I am gay. I am an athlete. I shouldn't have to hide any part of OF NBC 6 PHOTO COURTESY my identity.

Take time to recognize who you are and the things that make you that person. Embrace those facts about yourself and then share them with the world! any of us know Roxanne Vargas from both her television work and her pas- sionate support of the LGBTQ community for many years. Roxanne is an EMMY Award winner, the host of NBC 6's "6 in the Mix," an NBC 6 weekend anchor, a fre- quent Spanish contributor for NBC 6's sister station Telemundo 51, and a beloved Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade emcee.

Wire Magazine sat down with Roxanne to dis- cuss her advocacy for the LGBTQ community and what it means to be the 10th anniversary Miami Beach Gay Pride Ally Grand Marshal.

Rafa Carvajal: What do you enjoy the most about working on TV and NBC 6? Roxanne Vargas: It's all about the people. TOP TRAX By DJ FR8-O TAYLOR DAYNE TELLS IT TO MIAMI BEACH PRIDE

nytime I hear Taylor Dayne belt out one of her legendary dance hits like "Tell It To My Heart" or "Prove Your Love," it's not un- usual to catch me singing along, moving to the beat or both. And don't even get me started on her heart-wrenching slow jams, "Love Will Lead You Back" and "I'll Always Love You!" Whether its beat or ballads, there's no doubt that this diva can command any room – large or small.

Ever since she exploded onto the scene in 1987 with her big hair, big attitude and even bigger voice, the Grammy-nominated singer has been one of the LGBTQ community's most loyal supporters; unleashing addictive club an- thems, headlining at Pride events around the globe and even performing the offcial theme song of the 2010 Gay Games, "Facing a Miracle." This weekend the unstoppable artist will be proving her love for us on the shores of Miami Beach as we celebrate our communi- ty's most anticipated event of the year – Miami Beach Gay Pride.

Having met her backstage in the mid-90's just before she took the stage at my favorite gay club, my teenage self was once again feeling giddy at the thought of having a more in-depth convo with one of my all-time favorite idols; and she did not disappoint. Here's what she had to say about her Miami Beach Pride debut, what surprises she has in store for us, and what she is most proud of.

DJ FR8-O: You've performed at quite a few Pride events throughout your career. How does it feel to fnally be doing Miami Pride for the frst time and for its 10th anniversary? Taylor Dayne: I'm excited to be a part of this year's Miami Beach Pride. I have had many a fun and lovely time in Miami over the last 25 years, watching the city grow.
