Commencement represents an important academic milestone, and you deserve to celebrate. Today, we are honored to celebrate with you. While we cannot join you in person, I speak for everyone at University of Maryland Global Campus when I say that we are here with you in spirit—deeply proud of your every achievement and standing behind you as you continue to pursue your dreams and aspirations. When you succeed in your studies and in life, we succeed in our mission, and it is truly an honor to welcome you as UMGC alumni. Many of you are also active-duty servicemembers, veterans of the U.S. military, or medical personnel and first responders on the front lines in the fight against our global pandemic. We salute you and the many others who live lives of service, and we thank you for choosing UMGC to continue your education. As UMGC graduates, you are each better equipped to lead—in your family, your community, your place of work. Be brave, and know that we share your vision of a world that is better and brighter, safer and more secure, more peaceful, and more just. Embrace that vision and let it lead you. Sincerely, Gregory W. Fowler, PhD President University of Maryland Global Campus Spring 2021 Speaker Brigadier General Janeen L. Birckhead serves as the assistant adjutant general (Army) of Maryland and the commander of the Maryland Army National Guard. Birckhead received her commission as a distinguished military graduate of the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) at Hampton University. She has had several tours of duty in overseas locations, including Afghanistan. In 1994, she received an appointment to the Maryland Army National Guard. When she assumed command in 2018, she became BRIGADIER part of Maryland’s—and the country’s—first National Guard GENERAL JANEEN L. command to be composed entirely of women. BIRCKHEAD ’96 Recently, Birckhead headed the 59th presidential ASSISTANT ADJUTANT inauguration and security mission as Task Force Capitol GENERAL (ARMY) commander. She led the security efforts for Capitol Hill OF MARYLAND AND and the surrounding area, including the Supreme Court COMMANDER OF and Library of Congress, following the attack on the THE MARYLAND ARMY U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. NATIONAL GUARD In January 2021, Governor Larry Hogan appointed her to lead Maryland’s Vaccine Equity Task Force as part of the state’s effort to ensure equitable distribution of the COVID-19 vaccines. She works with the state and local health departments to reach underserved communities and those with vaccine hesitancy. Birckhead is also the deputy commanding general for Reserve Affairs at the U.S. Army War College. In her civilian capacity, she serves as a senior advisor in the Bureau of Trust Funds Administration in the Department of the Interior. Birckhead graduated magna cum laude from Hampton University with a bachelor’s degree in political science. She holds two master’s degrees, one in management from University of Maryland University College (now University of Maryland Global Campus) and the other in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College. Her military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and NATO Medal.
