The alphabetical nickname means Multidimensional Luxury. According to Honda, the MDX is the best-selling three-way luxury crossover of all time, with total sales in the U.S. expected to exceed 700,000 units by the end of 2014. It came in second place in the luxury crossover sales after the Lexus RX, which offers only two rows of seats. The MDX was the first crossover that has a third row of seats, and shares the platform with the Honda Pilot. The pilot seats eight, while the MDX seats seven, with two seats in the third row. The MDX was introduced on October 5, 2000 as a 2001 model, replacing the slow-selling American body-on-frame SLX based on the Isuzu Trooper. In Japan, it filled the gap when Honda Horizon (also based on Trooper) was discontinued in 1999. In 2003, Honda MDX went on sale in Japan and Australia. The MDX was the most expensive crossover in the Acura lineup, with the exception of the 2009-13 model years, when Acura added a crossover to the slot over the MDX, called THED. The 2001-2002 3.5 V6 models produce 240 hp (180 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. 2003-2006 3471 cc (3.5 in x 3.6 in) the engine model produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The weight of the kerb is 4,451 pounds (2019 kg), with 106.3 in (2700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) ground clearance. The cargo floor can roll over to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed for 7 passengers, The third row seats are small and only have two seats, unlike Odysseus and the pilot, whose third row accommodates three passengers. The car is equipped with an automatic all-wheel drive system (named VTM-4), which is activated during the acceleration of the line, as well as when the wheels slip. In addition, the system offers a lock mode that can be activated and operate at low speeds and provides a permanent 4wd and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; Designed to climb steep hills and get out of stuck situations. To reduce transmission noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system works like a front wheel drive during a normal cruise. The VTM-4 AWD system in MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in The Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It differs from the real-time AWD system in the Honda CR-V in that it can block, and it tries to predict when the thrust will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slipping occurs (by monitoring the throttle of the entrances). The Honda CR-V system waits for slippage and then sends power back. The navigation system and dvd entertainment options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both can be ordered at the same time with the 2003 model. The navigational version comes with a rear-view video camera from the 2003 model. Since 2005, the navigation system has included information from zagat about restaurants and other points of interest. The 2003 model was rated As Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates 23 mpg-U.S. (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg-im) highways and 17 mpg-U.S. (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg-im) cities. Honda MDX (Australia) In the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the 2002 model and the design wheels were updated. The 2004 model received an additional 5 hp (4 kW). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and 0-60 time 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features double tail tubes instead of a single pipe in earlier models, side airbags, new headlights and taillights, as well as new wheels. Some of the chrome finishes on the 2004 model use a matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finishes on earlier models. Little has changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor changes to the car's chrome and artificial wood interior trim, which can now be with dark gray wood (as opposed to the reddish wood on previous models), as well as a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors. The second-generation MDX was released on October 17, 2006 in the United States. The body of the second-generation model has a wider track and a longer wheelbase than the previous MDX, but rear visibility has deteriorated relative to the previous generation. The redesigned Acura MDX unit body was designed with the Honda Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body design, designed to absorb power in a collision. The suspension was set up on the German race track Nurburgring. The engine was upgraded to a 3.7- liter V6 tuned to 300 hp (224 kW) at 6000 rpm and 270 lb⋅ft (366 N⋅mm) of torque at 5000 rpm. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds and is estimated by the EPA to consume 16 mpg U.S. (15 L/100 km; 19 mpg) in the city and 21 mpg U.S. (11 L/100 km; 25 mpg) on the highway. It is one of the most powerful engines Honda has released to date. The previous generation's VTM-4 was replaced with the new SH-AWD Super Handling All-Wheel Drive before debuting on the 2005 Acura RL. This AWD system is one of the most advanced in its class, featuring an active rear differential often found on high performance cars. The MDX is capable of towing 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg). Like all Acuras, the MDX comes with high-standard equipment including a moon hatch, leather interior and high-intensity bit (xenon) low-beam headlights. For the 2007 to 2009 model years, three version packages were available: Sports, Technology and Entertainment. The technology package includes the Acura/Alpine DVD- based satellite GPS navigation system with AcuraLink satellite communication with real-time motion reporting satellite (XM NavTraffic), 410-watt Acura/ELS DTS Surround audio system with XM Satellite Radio, rear-view camera, and remote-powered liftgate, running either from the remote control key, or from the remote control of the key. The sports pack featured active suspension shock absorbers (jointly developed by Honda and Beijing West Industries) that dynamically improves handling according to road conditions with a button in the center of the stack to on Sports/Comfort modes. This Comfort/Sport mode uses magneto-reological shock absorbers that change when the magnetic field is injected (usually in milliseconds). The Sport package also includes unique 5-spoke aluminium-alloy wheels, perforated leather seats and items in a Technology package. The entertainment package offers a flip-down 9-inch (230 mm) LCD screen with 2 Dolby Digital wireless headphones, a second row of heated outboard seats, and a unique center stack of silver trim. The entertainment package is only available on Sport or Technology Package models compared to the 1st generation MDX, where the entertainment package was available as a standalone package on Touring Models. All Canadian Acura MDX models, in addition to the heated front seats, also get a second row of heated outboard seats as standard equipment as well.
