    FEDERATION INTERNATIONALE DE L' AUTOMOBILE World Motor Sport Council Decision Re: Article 151(c) International Sporting Code – Vodafone McLaren Mercedes 13 September 2007 The World Motor Sport Council (“WMSC”) met on 13th September 2007 to consider a charge that Vodafone McLaren Mercedes (“McLaren”) had breached Article 151(c) of the International Sporting Code. 1 Background 1.1 Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro ("Ferrari") has submitted that it received information on 24 June 2007 suggesting that unauthorised use may have been made of certain of its confidential information. Ferrari has submitted that it subsequently learned that certain of its confidential information had come into possession of Mr. Michael Coughlan (“Coughlan”), the then Chief Designer of McLaren. 1.2 On 3 July 2007, in the context of litigation in the High Court of England and Wales ("High Court Proceedings") between Ferrari and Coughlan, a search was undertaken at the private residence of Coughlan under the authority of that Court. According to the evidence before the WMSC, during that search, a dossier of some 780 pages of confidential information belonging to Ferrari was recovered. 1.3 In light of the results of the search, Ferrari wrote to the FIA late on 3 July 2007 inviting it to consider whether the FIA should launch an investigation into the matter. 1.4 After preliminary investigations, on 12 July 2007 the FIA wrote to McLaren requesting it to appear at an extraordinary meeting of the WMSC in Paris on 26 July 2007 (“the 26 July WMSC meeting”). McLaren was informed that, at the 26 July WMSC meeting, it would be asked to answer the charge that between March and July 2007, in breach of Article 151(c) of the International Sporting Code, it had unauthorised possession of documents and confidential information belonging to Ferrari.

We’re looking at those teams who deserve a place in the history books, whether it is for greatness, or mediocrity. Today we’re getting right up to date with our fifth team – Spyker F1. The roots of current Formula One team Force India F1 start way back in 1991 with Jordan Grand Prix. They have been through several iterations in recent times, and today we’re going to talk about just one of them. Jordan was bought by Midland F1 who were bought by Spyker. Spyker Cars are a relatively new Dutch automotive company, although the name dates back to the early 1900s. This new, modern version of Spyker was founded in 1999, and they build high performance sports cars. They did have a little motorsport experience, building and running GT cars. The key to their entrance into Formula 1 seems to be with Michiel Mol, a wealthy internet entrepreneur. He had previously sponsored Jos Verstappen, and wanted to further his involvement with the sport. His new deal saw him invest in Spyker Cars, to help them invest in F1, to the tune of over $100 million. He became their Director of F1 Racing. The deal with Midland was completed mid‐way through the 2006 season. Current drivers Christijan Albers and Tiego Monteiro were kept on, whilst the team set about trying to change their name. The regulations frown upon mid‐ season name changes, though, so Spyker stuck to being a title sponsor – Spyker MF1 Racing.

    Bernard Rey, Präsident des ING Renault F1 Team Die Ziele für 2009 Die Saison 2008 hat bestätigt, dass Renault an der Spitze der Königsklasse zu Hause ist. Nach einem enttäuschenden Start in die Saison bündelte das Team alle Kräfte, bewies in der zweiten Saisonhälfte beispiellosen Kampfeswillen und feierte in Singapur und Japan zwei Siege. Diese Ergebnisse unterstreichen den Erfolgshunger des ING Renault F1 Teams, der in der Vorbereitungsphase auf die neue Saison als unerschöpflicher Motivationsquell diente. Unsere beiden Fahrer für 2009 stehen fest und erst jüngst haben wir in neue, hochmoderne Fertigungs- und Entwicklungsstätten investiert – und damit eine deutliche Aussage hinsichtlich unserer Ambitionen für die kommende Saison getätigt: Wir wollen ganz vorne mitfahren und ein Auto auf die Strecke bringen, das um Podiumsplätze und Siege kämpfen kann. Smith Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University, Nottingham NG1 4BU, United Kingdom Abstract Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine how and why outsiders, rather than incumbents, are able to take advantage of technological discontinuities. Design/ methodology/approach – The paper employs a case study of a single innovation that transformed the technology of Formula 1 motor racing. Findings – The findings show how social capital made up of ‘weak ties’ in the form of informal personal networks, enabled an outsider to successfully make the leap to a new technological regime. Practical implications – The findings show that where new product development involves a shift to new technologies, social capital can have an important part to play. Originality/value – It is widely accepted that radical innovations are often competence destroying, making it difficult for incumbents to make the transition to a new technology. The findings show how the social capital of outsiders can place them at a particular advantage in utilizing new technologies.
