Vybranými díly jsou kniha od novozélandské autorky Ngaio Marsh Smrt za zimního slunovratu, film natočený formou dokumentu Morris: Life with Bells on podle scénáře Charlese Thomase Oldhama a dokument Tima Plestera Way of the Morris. Tato díla jsou analyzována a srovnávána zejména s teoretickými pracemi Erica Howsbawma a Nigela Watsona, které se zaměřují na význam tradice a životního stylu v současné době, popř. postmoderního životního stylu. Ve srovnání je patrný rozdíl mezi pojetí a vnímání tance Morris díly současnými, jmenované dva filmy (rok 2009 a 2010), a detektivním románem Smrt za zimního slunovratu (poprvé vyšla v roce 1957). V díle Ngiao Marsh je tanec Morris součástí každodenního života, i když je prezentován pouze v dané dny v roce. Toto pojetí reflektuje postavení tradice v tehdejší společnosti. Zatímco ve filmu Morris: Life with Bells on jsou patrné známky postmoderního pojetí tradice. Tanec Morris je životním stylem a kukátkem do minulosti, nikoli tradice v pravém slova smyslu. -

Ali Larkin 12/7/17 Shakespeare Forgotten Fairies: Traditional English Folklore in A Midsummer Night’s Dream One of the most popular sets of characters in Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream is the powerful and mysterious fairies, whose magical antics drive the action of the play. Based in traditional English folklore, the fairies stand in contrast to the upper class Athenians and the Athenian peasant players. The play, which is set in Athens, follows in part the marital discord of Oberon and Titania, King and Queen of the Fairies and their servants, which reflects the aristocratic tendencies both of the Athenian court and the patrons of Shakespeare’s work. The two fairies rule over the woods outside of Athens, and yet their lives are extremely intertwined with those within the city. -

Trish Bater 080207052 2 Abstract This thesis investigates the custom of white people blacking their faces and its continuation at a time when society is increasingly aware of accusations of racism. To provide a context, an overview of the long history of black people in England is offered, and issues about black stereotypes, including how ‘blackness’ has been perceived and represented, are considered. The historical use of blackface in England in various situations, including entertainment, social disorder, and tradition, is described in some detail. It is found that nowadays the practice has largely been rejected, but continues in folk activities, notably in some dance styles and in the performance of traditional (folk) drama. Research conducted through participant observation, interview, case study, and examination of web-based resources, drawing on my long familiarity with the folk world, found that participants overwhelmingly believe that blackface is a part of the tradition they are following and is connected to its past use as a disguise. However, although all are aware of the sensitivity of the subject, some performers are fiercely defensive of blackface, while others now question its application and amend their ‘disguise’ in different ways. -

Comparative Analysis Of Russian, English, Korean Fairy And Animalistic Tales 19 CoMparativE AnalySiS Of Russian, ENgliSh, Korean FAiRy ANd ANimalistiC TAles ANáliSiS CoMparativo dE loS cuentoS dE hAdas, rusoS, iNgleses y CoreanoS ABSTRACT The problem of this topic is reflected in the need for understanding and awareness of other cultures. The barrier of cultures becomes obvious only when the native culture collides (or compares) with others different from it. That is why we considered it necessary to research and compare different types of cultures, namely, their representatives are tales, since they are familiar to us from childhood and which reflect the soul of the people. In our research, we decided to consider folklore texts A.N. Afanas`eva [2014], N.E. Onchukova [2017] and other authors. Methodological and theoretic base of research compose fundamental studies for theory of text and folklore (A.N. Veselovsky [1939], V.I. Gusev [1995], I.I. Kravcov [1977], E.V. Pomeranceva [1975] etc). Main method is comparative analysis folkloristic texts. As a result of our research, we came to the conclusion that the religious, cultural and other preconceptions of nations are not a barrier for appreciation of the different cultures. Russian, English, Korean cultural mentality are different, but have common features. All tales connect advocacy of positive humanity, exposure of the evil, acculturate. We consider general national aspect in every tale, in particular educe national specific of folklore, and conclude that it has similar didactic tasks and there is cultural historical value for every nations, because this form of folklore factor influenced the cultural and social progress. -

Folklore, Loss, and Social Change in Nineteenth Century Cornwall BRENDAN McMAHON Introduction: the historical context The nineteenth century was a period of unprecedented social and economic change, at least in France and England. From France emerged the possibility of political transformation, which was to have profound historical consequences, and from England the no less momentous possibility of industrial transformation, forces which combined to create a triumphant liberal capitalism, which consolidated and extended its power in the latter half of the century.1 Britain, where much of this process began, was of course a scene of unprecedented social and industrial change at this time. Between 1831 and 1901 the population increased by ten percent in each decade, and cities grew disproportionately: when Victoria came to the throne only five towns in England and Wales had a population of more than 100,000; by the end of the reign, there were twenty three.2 Cornwall too was transformed: the population increased from 192,000 to 322,000, though it fell during the last three decades of the century due to recession and emigration, as we shall see.3 Cornish people played a big part in the transformation of Britain, and the wider world, and it would be hard to imagine the Industrial Revolution without Humphry Davy, Richard Trevithick, and the countless Cornish engineers and miners who made the wheels turn, everywhere from Mexico to South Australia.4 The landscape itself was changed forever. At the beginning of the century Cornwall was the world’s biggest copper producer, and technological innovation caused both copper and tin production to soar; old mines were re-opened and between 1800 and 1837 the number of workings rose from seventy five to over 200. -

Cole A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the School of English in the University of St Andrews 17 December 2013 i ABSTRACT My thesis, ‘Fairy in Middle English romance’, aims to contribute to the recent resurgence of interest in the literary medieval supernatural by studying the concept of ‘fairy’ as it is presented in fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Middle English romances. This thesis is particularly interested in how the use of ‘fairy’ in Middle English romances serves as an arena in which to play out ‘thought-experiments’ that test anxieties about faith, gender, power, and death. My first chapter considers the concept of fairy in its medieval Christian context by using the romance Melusine as a case study to examine fairies alongside medieval theological explorations of the nature of demons. I then examine the power dynamic of fairy/human relationships and the extent to which having one partner be a fairy affects these explorations of medieval attitudes toward gender relations and hierarchy. The third chapter investigates ‘fairy-like’ women enchantresses in romance and the extent to which fairy is ‘performed’ in romance. -

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 3 Abstract This thesis explores the folk revival phenomenon in England, through an original examination of its place in the social and political history of the country after the Second World War. Although its roots stretched back to the early twentieth century, the post- war English folk revival significantly occurred in the context of the nation’s de- industrialisation, and exposed tensions between, on the one hand, a nostalgic lament for a fast-disappearing working class life, and a ‘forward-looking’ socialist vision of working-class culture. The original contribution to knowledge of this project lies in its analytic approach to the English folk revival as an important part of the post-war political culture. It looks at the revival from the outside in, and contextualizes the movement in the social and political story of post-war England, while also placing it within a dynamic transnational framework, a complex cross-Atlantic cultural exchange with its more well-known American contemporary. In so doing, this thesis contributes to the existing historiographies of folk revivalism in England, as well as the social and political historiographical discourses of the postwar period: the continued salience of class in English society; the transformation of the nation’s economic infrastructures; the social and political influence of the Welfare State – the folk revival tapped into all of these overlapping strands, and helped to magnify them. -

This must be taught from early childhood. Unfortunately, many modern films and computer games, which schoolchildren are so fond of, are not able to teach them either kindness, good taste or creativity. At the beginning of the new century, there is an increased interest in national culture, ethnic processes, traditional artistic creativity, and folklore. The preservation and development of the national culture, its roots is a major task that requires a careful attitude towards the monuments of history and culture, towards traditional folk art. The revival of folklore, folk customs, rituals and holidays is an urgent problem of our time. Folklore reveals the soul of the people, their dignity and characteristics. From the point of view of science, folklore is a phenomenon that deserves special study and careful evaluation. The term is accepted in international science and in translation means - the wisdom of the people. Folklore is the life of the people, its history, its gradual development.
