Next Meeting: MARCH 3, 2018 First Presbyterian Church, 412 W. Pioneer Avenue, Puyallup, WA 98371 S Spring 2018 Editor: Alene Reaugh The fall meeting was well attended by a more than 20 people including several newly discovered Cornish joining us for the first time. Our Spring Meeting to celebrate St. Piran’s day will be: March 3, 2018. We will put together a nominating committee and discuss the election to be held at our Annual Meeting in July. We will also ask for volunteers to at- tend and represent the Cornish at the Celtic Highland Games held throughout the summer. The games will be in Belfair, Enumclaw, Portland, Salem, Eugene, McMinnville (replacing the Newport Games). Many of us have done this and found it a lot of fun. People stop at the booth with the question, Am I Cornish? And it goes from there. We have met many Cornish and other people who LOVE Cornwall. I have met many people since joining this group. July 2018, we will be celebrating our 20th year as The Pacific Northwest Cornish Socie- ty, a group formed to promote our heritage, history, culture, and genealogy to discover just what it means to be Cornish and who our ancestors were. We are planning a big Anniversary Celebration and hope that we can interest past members and welcome all the newly discovered Cornish. So please put the date JULY 21, 2018 on your cal- endar and join us at Fort Borst Park for a fun party to include balloons and cake, Celtic entertainment, memories, photos of founding members and past events PLUS a lot of good food. -

Link to thesis website Chapter 6 Competing speech communities Chapter 6 Competing speech communities The final chapter of this section focuses on the evolution of folk tradition, and the new spaces created for performance, within the Celto-Cornish movement through the latter half of the twentieth century to the current era of festival culture and Pan- Celticism. It makes the case that the Celto-Cornish movement and the folk revival that arrived in Cornwall in the sixties represent different speech communities, which competed for ownership of oral folk tradition and the authenticity it represented. It must be also be recognised that there is a third speech community with a stake in the celebration of tradition, the local community within which it takes place. One outcome of these competing speech communities is the way in which the same folk phenomena will be used to express quite different identities. The Padstow May Day festivities for example are a celebration that firstly represents a sense of the towns community1 and secondly a Celto-Cornish tradition2 but at the same time is used as an icon by the English Folk Dance And Song Society.3 Underlying this discussion, however, must be the recognition that identity is chaotically unique for each individual and each group of individuals, all of which are at the centre of a “complex web of being”.4 In order to pursue this argument it is first necessary to revisit and examine more closely what is meant by a speech community and how this might affect performance and meaning within oral folk tradition. -

“It Just Belongs To Be” It Just belongs to be! Traditional Music and Cornish identity London Cornish Association Rosyer Lecture 11th July 2008 Merv Davey “It Just Belongs To Be” Abstract This presentation first explores the early roots of Cornish Folk Music, what is the significance the Cornish Carol tradition and who were the musicians and dancers represented on the 16th Century bench ends at Altarnon Church. Following on from this the activities of the late early 20th century British Folk Revivalists in relation to Cornish tradition are considered together with the quite different approach taken by the Celtic revivalists in Cornwall. Lastly we will look at the ongoing traditions of today and how they reflect both the past and modern Cornish identity. “It Just Belongs To Be” Folk A genre of music derived initially from a 19th C folkoric notion of a rural cultural idyll which embraced a broader “peoples music” mindset from the 1950s to include industrial songs and an increasing body of newly composed material in “folk Style”. In the past 40 years it has been increasingly driven by commercial and artistic interests so that it is useful to distinguish the term from “tradition “It Just Belongs To Be” Tradition The active process by which a phenomena such as a tune, song or custom changes and evolves within community usage as it is transmitted from one person to the next and one generation to the next. Although influenced by popular, commercial and art culture, it is ultimately driven by the experiences, perceptions and values of a community or an individual reflecting that community “It Just Belongs To Be” Cornish Identity Identity is a sense of being defined by an individual or groups perceptions and understanding of their relationship with other individuals or groups. -

Vliv nacionalismu na znovuobnovení kulturního povědomí v Cornwallu ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The influence of nationalism on cultural revival in Cornwall Souhrn Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá situací menšiny na území hrabství Cornwall, kde probíhá revitalizace původní keltské kultury. Cornwall, nejjižnější cíp Velké Británie, je jednou ze šesti oficiálně uznaných keltských oblastí spolu se Skotskem, Irskem, ostrovem Mann, Walesem a Bretaní. Tato menšina se v posledních čtyřiceti letech rozrůstá a dostává se do povědomí široké veřejnosti a to především díky vzrůstajícímu počtu mluvčích znovuobnoveného keltského jazyka, kornštině. Stejně jako u dalších minorit, tak i v Cornwallu existuje místní nacionalismus, který je hnací silou změn. Cornwallská identita, ke které se k roku 2011 hlásí necelých 14% obyvatel, je definována nejen jazykem, ale i dalšími kulturními aspekty. Protože tato kulturní revitalizace probíhá až od druhé poloviny minulého století, klade si práce za úkol zjistit a popsat klíčové události, které daly hnutí do pohybu. -

Anotace Tato diplomová práce s názvem One Hundred Years of the Morris Dance: The Role of Tradition pojednává o podobě tradičního anglického tance Morris ve vybraných dílech, na nichž je ukázané, jak se vyvíjel vztah k tradici a konkrétně k tanci Morris. Vybranými díly jsou kniha od novozélandské autorky Ngaio Marsh Smrt za zimního slunovratu, film natočený formou dokumentu Morris: Life with Bells on podle scénáře Charlese Thomase Oldhama a dokument Tima Plestera Way of the Morris. Tato díla jsou analyzována a srovnávána zejména s teoretickými pracemi Erica Howsbawma a Nigela Watsona, které se zaměřují na význam tradice a životního stylu v současné době, popř. postmoderního životního stylu. Ve srovnání je patrný rozdíl mezi pojetí a vnímání tance Morris díly současnými, jmenované dva filmy (rok 2009 a 2010), a detektivním románem Smrt za zimního slunovratu (poprvé vyšla v roce 1957). V díle Ngiao Marsh je tanec Morris součástí každodenního života, i když je prezentován pouze v dané dny v roce. Toto pojetí reflektuje postavení tradice v tehdejší společnosti. Zatímco ve filmu Morris: Life with Bells on jsou patrné známky postmoderního pojetí tradice. Tanec Morris je životním stylem a kukátkem do minulosti, nikoli tradice v pravém slova smyslu. -

Ali Larkin 12/7/17 Shakespeare Forgotten Fairies: Traditional English Folklore in A Midsummer Night’s Dream One of the most popular sets of characters in Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream is the powerful and mysterious fairies, whose magical antics drive the action of the play. Based in traditional English folklore, the fairies stand in contrast to the upper class Athenians and the Athenian peasant players. The play, which is set in Athens, follows in part the marital discord of Oberon and Titania, King and Queen of the Fairies and their servants, which reflects the aristocratic tendencies both of the Athenian court and the patrons of Shakespeare’s work. The two fairies rule over the woods outside of Athens, and yet their lives are extremely intertwined with those within the city. -

Trish Bater 080207052 2 Abstract This thesis investigates the custom of white people blacking their faces and its continuation at a time when society is increasingly aware of accusations of racism. To provide a context, an overview of the long history of black people in England is offered, and issues about black stereotypes, including how ‘blackness’ has been perceived and represented, are considered. The historical use of blackface in England in various situations, including entertainment, social disorder, and tradition, is described in some detail. It is found that nowadays the practice has largely been rejected, but continues in folk activities, notably in some dance styles and in the performance of traditional (folk) drama. Research conducted through participant observation, interview, case study, and examination of web-based resources, drawing on my long familiarity with the folk world, found that participants overwhelmingly believe that blackface is a part of the tradition they are following and is connected to its past use as a disguise. However, although all are aware of the sensitivity of the subject, some performers are fiercely defensive of blackface, while others now question its application and amend their ‘disguise’ in different ways. -

The barrier of cultures becomes obvious only when the native culture collides (or compares) with others different from it. That is why we considered it necessary to research and compare different types of cultures, namely, their representatives are tales, since they are familiar to us from childhood and which reflect the soul of the people. In our research, we decided to consider folklore texts A.N. Afanas`eva [2014], N.E. Onchukova [2017] and other authors. Methodological and theoretic base of research compose fundamental studies for theory of text and folklore (A.N. Veselovsky [1939], V.I. Gusev [1995], I.I. Kravcov [1977], E.V. Pomeranceva [1975] etc). Main method is comparative analysis folkloristic texts. As a result of our research, we came to the conclusion that the religious, cultural and other preconceptions of nations are not a barrier for appreciation of the different cultures. Russian, English, Korean cultural mentality are different, but have common features. All tales connect advocacy of positive humanity, exposure of the evil, acculturate. We consider general national aspect in every tale, in particular educe national specific of folklore, and conclude that it has similar didactic tasks and there is cultural historical value for every nations, because this form of folklore factor influenced the cultural and social progress. -
