The Monument Question in Late Habsburg Austria A Critical Introduction to Max Dvořák’s Denkmalpflege Jonathan Blower Doctor of Philosophy The University of Edinburgh 2012 Abstract The present thesis is a critical introduction to a body of writings on heritage conservation by the Czech-born art historian Max Dvořák (1874–1921). From 1905 onwards, Dvořák was both professor of art history at the University of Vienna and Conservator General at the state institution responsible for heritage conservation in Austria: the ‘Royal and Imperial Central Commission for the Research and Preservation of Artistic and Historical Monuments’ (est. 1850). His published and archival texts on the subject are presented here for the first time in English translation. In this sense, the thesis follows the model of existing scholarship on the visual arts in Vienna around 1900, namely the combined English translations and critical introductions to the writings of Camillo Sitte (Collins & Collins, 1986), Otto Wagner (Mallgrave, 1988) and Alois Riegl (Forster & Ghirardo, 1982).

Since the nineteenth century, Central Europe has been undergoing rapid changes in the political, social and cultural spheres, which was reflected in the self-definition of the nations living in this region, and in their definition by others. The Czech people, who until 1918 were a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, gave birth to a national revival movement in the nineteenth century and eventually emancipated themselves to create an independent Czechoslovakia. The idea of „national identity“ was, therefore, crucial and this was enhanced in many areas of human activity, including the construction of a historical legitimacy for the nation. The struggle for recognition of the historical existence of the Czech nation was also projected into the discourse adopted for historical and contemporary art writing and exhibition practice. In this thesis, I focus on the ways in which Czech national identity was constructed in the historiography of art. I shall argue that the various ideologies which influenced the writers led to an understanding of Czech art as epitomising certain qualities of the Czech nation. At the same time, the Czech nation was presented as highly advanced because of its artistic achievements.

Leipzig 2009, S. 218-234 Kunstgeschichte Thomas Topfstedt, Frank Zöllner Die Geschichte des Instituts für Kunstgeschichte der Universität Leipzig ist vor allem für den Zeitraum zwischen 1933 und 1989 weitgehend unerforscht. Auf Archivrecher- chen gestützte Vörarbeiten existieren hauptsächlich über die erste Entwicklungsphase des Instituts im späten 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert und zu den damaligen Lehrstuhl- inhabern. 1 Der hier folgende Abriß der Institutsgeschichte basiert auf diesen Vorarbeiten und auf den Ergebnissen einer 1997 von Frank Zöllner abgehaltenen Lehrveranstaltung zu den älteren Protagonisten der Leipziger Kunstgeschichte. Verdienstvoll ist des wei- teren die 2006 erschienene Studie von Christine Kratzke2 über das Kunsthistorische Institut der Universität Leipzig von 1945 bis 1958. Für weitere Projekte bietet das Universitätsarchiv Leipzig einen reichen Fundus bislang kaum genutzten Materials. Von der Gründung 1873 bis zur Zerstörung 1943 Die Gründung des Instituts für Kunstgeschichte an der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität Leipzig erfolgte im Jahre 1873. Es ist somit nach dem 1872 gegründeten Kunsthistorischen Institut der Bonner Universität das zweitälteste Institut dieser Art in Deutschland und zählt zu den weltweit wenigen kunsthistorischen Instituten, deren Gründungsdatum noch in das 19. Jahrhundert fällt. Der erste Lehrstuhlinhaber war der 1873 als Ordinarius für Geschichte der Mittleren und Neueren Kunst an die Philoso- phische Fakultät berufene Anton Heinrich Springer. 3 Er wurde 1825 in Prag geboren, wo er an der Universität von 1841 bis 1846 Philosophie und Geschichte studierte. Unter den Lehrern der ersten Generation des Faches Kunstgeschichte, das sich damals als univer- sitäre Disziplin zu etablieren begann, gehört er zu den herausragenden Persönlichkeiten.
