2017 Abstracts
Abstracts for the Annual SECAC Meeting in Columbus, Ohio October 25th-28th, 2017 Conference Chair, Aaron Petten, Columbus College of Art & Design Emma Abercrombie, SCAD Savannah The Millennial and the Millennial Female: Amalia Ulman and ORLAN This paper focuses on Amalia Ulman’s digital performance Excellences and Perfections and places it within the theoretical framework of ORLAN’s surgical performance series The Reincarnation of Saint Orlan. Ulman’s performance occurred over a twenty-one week period on the artist’s Instagram page. She posted a total of 184 photographs over twenty-one weeks. When viewed in their entirety and in relation to one another, the photographs reveal a narrative that can be separated into three distinct episodes in which Ulman performs three different female Instagram archetypes through the use of selfies and common Instagram image tropes. This paper pushes beyond the casual connection that has been suggested, but not explored, by art historians between the two artists and takes the comparison to task. Issues of postmodern identity are explored as they relate to the Internet culture of the 1990s when ORLAN began her surgery series and within the digital landscape of the Web 2.0 age that Ulman works in, where Instagram is the site of her performance and the selfie is a medium of choice. Abercrombie situates Ulman’s “image-body” performance within the critical framework of feminist performance practice, using the postmodern performance of ORLAN as a point of departure. J. Bradley Adams, Berry College Controlled Nature Focused on gardens, Adams’s work takes a range of forms and operates on different scales. -

Painting by Joseph Anton Koch Returns to the Städel
AiA news-service Painting by Joseph Anton Koch returns to the Städel Joseph Anton Koch (1768–1839), Landscape with the Prophet Balaam and his donkey, ca. 1832. Oil on canvas, 74 x 102 cm. Photo: Städel Museum. FRANKFURT.- The painting Landscape with the Prophet Balaam and his donkey (ca. 1832) by the artist Joseph Anton Koch (1768–1839) is returning to the Städel Museum. The work from the museum’s collection was considered lost in 1945 and was recently rediscovered in a private collection. Thanks to the generous gesture of returning the work from private ownership, it is now once again on view in the Städel. For its presentation within the collection of nineteenth century art, the painting was carefully restored and newly framed by the museum. It is thus once again part of the Städel’s extensive collection of works by Joseph Anton Koch. A total of three paintings, thirteen drawings and forty-nine prints provide profound insight into the oeuvre of the artist, whose impact on German art in the nineteenth century cannot be overestimated. “We are indebted to the former owner for the extraordinary gesture and generosity in returning the painting to the Städel Museum. Since the founding of the Städel in 1815, this work has been one of the early, impressive acquisitions of contemporary art. With the return of the work, it will once again be possible to show the full spectrum of Joseph Anton Koch’s oeuvre in the museum”, says Philipp Demandt, Director of the Städel Museum. “Joseph Anton Koch was one of the outstanding landscape painters of the early nineteenth century. -

ACTA UNIVERSITATIS UPSALIENSIS Uppsala Studies in History of Ideas 50
ACTA UNIVERSITATIS UPSALIENSIS Uppsala Studies in History of Ideas 50 Cover designed by Annelie Drakman and Camilla Eriksson. Life mask of Benjamin Robert Haydon, by unknown artist (c. 1820). Plaster cast. © National Portrait Gallery, London. Every Man His Own Monument Self-Monumentalizing in Romantic Britain Chris Haffenden Dissertation presented at Uppsala University to be publicly examined in Auditorium minus, Gustavianum, Uppsala universitetsmuseum, Akademigatan 3, Uppsala, Friday, 9 November 2018 at 10:15 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The examination will be conducted in English. Faculty examiner: Dr. Samantha Matthews (Bristol University, UK). Abstract Haffenden, C. 2018. Every Man His Own Monument. Self-Monumentalizing in Romantic Britain. Uppsala Studies in History of Ideas 50. 263 pp. Uppsala: Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis. ISBN 978-91-513-0451-9. From framing private homes as museums, to sitting for life masks and appointing biographers, new forms of self-monumentalizing emerged in the early nineteenth century. In this study I investigate the emergence and configuration of such practices in Romantic Britain. Positioning these practices at the intersection of emergent national pantheons, a modern conception of history, and a newly-formed celebrity culture, I argue that this period witnessed the birth of distinctively modern ways for the individual to make immortality. Faced with a visceral fear of being forgotten, public figures began borrowing from celebrity culture to make their own monuments. Concentrated upon early nineteenth-century London, I characterize these practices as attempts at self-made immortality. I do so by analyzing the legacy projects of three well-known but seldom connected individuals: the Auto-Icon by the philosopher Jeremy Bentham (1748– 1832), the Soane Museum by the architect Sir John Soane (1753–1837), and the life-writing efforts of the painter Benjamin Robert Haydon (1786–1846). -
From an American Childhood Annie Dillard Some Boys Taught Me to Play Football
from An American Childhood Annie Dillard Some boys taught me to play football. This was fine sport. You thought up a new strategy for every play Tell about a time when you have and whispered it to the others. You went out for a thrown yourself completely into pass, fooling everyone. Best, you got to throw an activity. yourself mightily at someone’s running legs. Either you brought him down or you hit the ground flat out on your chin, with your arms empty before you. It was all or nothing. If you hesitated in fear, you would miss and get hurt: you would take a hard fall while the kid got away, or you would get kicked in the face while the kid got away. But if you flung yourself wholeheartedly at the back of his knees—if you gathered and joined body and soul and pointed them diving fearlessly—then you likely wouldn’t get hurt, and you’d stop the ball. Your fate, and your team’s score, depended on your concentration and courage. Nothing girls did could compare with it. Point of view is Boys welcomed me at baseball, too, for I had, through the perspective enthusiastic practice, what was weirdly known as a from which a boy’s arm. In winter, in the snow, there was neither story is told. In first-person baseball nor football, so the boys and I threw snowballs point of view, the author tells at passing cars. I got in trouble throwing snowballs, the story from his or her own and have seldom been happier since.
