Už patarimus pinigų istorijos klausimais esu dėkingas Lietuvos nacionalinio muziejaus Numizmatikos skyriaus vedėjai Daliai Grimalauskaitei, už kon- sultacijas ankstyvųjų lietuviškų pinigų istorijos klausimais – šio muziejaus numizmatui Eduardui Remecui, buvusiam kolegai numizmatui Vytautui Aleksiejūnui, už patarimus ir nesavanaudišką pagalbą fotografuojant monetas – numizmatui Eugenijui Ivanauskui, už pagalbą – kolegoms iš Lietuvos banko. Autorius 6 Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės monetos / Coins of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania During the several hundred years of its existence from the 13th to the end of the 18th c., the Grand Duchy of Lithuania has left inexhaustible layers of material and spiritual culture. The cultural heritage of the GDL has been gaining increasingly more attention from archaeologists, historians, art investigators, museologists and numismatics specialists. Studying this historical period not only brings closer an already distant epoch, enables finding and learning the historical, artistic or writing artefacts characteristic of it, but enriches today’s culture in every possible way as well. The importance of such studying in contemporary works of scientists is suggested by the increasing number of publications of a different nature, restoration of historical and architectural monuments, creation by sculptors and artists. Over the 220 years following the end of the existence of the GDL the Lithuanian nation has survived through ups and downs. However, the present-day Republic of Lithuania is still related to the old Duchy through our coat of arms, Vytis. Heraldic symbols, historical personalities, architectural and writing heritage of the GDL are revived in the collectors coins issued by the Bank of Lithuania as well. One of the most interesting marks of a state’s historical, economic and cultural heritage is money. The Money Museum of the Bank of Lithuania, the first among the museums in Lithuania, is issuing a Catalogue of the Collection of Money of the GDL. This Catalogue publishes all money from this period accumulated at the Money Museum, from the first Lithuanian bars to the last coins, minted at the Vilnius Mint in 1666. At the same time the reader is introduced to separate historical periods; an overview of the development of Lithuanian money is given. The Catalogue also publishes Lithuanian counters of treasurers, minted at the Vilnius Mint, other museum material illustrating the history of the money of the GDL. I wish to express my sincere appreciation to Vidmantas Laurinavičius, Head of the Money Museum, for his valuable advice in preparing this publication; Linas Dikavičius, Head of the Publication and Translation Division, for his benevolent care; editor Ramutė Macienė for her patience and professionalism; Dalia Šatienė and Gabriella Anelauskaite, for translating this work into English; photographer Rolandas Ginaitis; designer Romanas Tumėnas. For advice on issues of the history of money, I wish to thank Dalia Grimalauskaitė, Head of the Numismatics Division at the National Museum of Lithuania; for consultations on the issues of the history of early Lithuanian money — Eduardas Remecas, numismatist of this Museum, and Vytautas Aleksiejūnas, my former colleague; for advice and unselfish assistance in photographing the coins — numismatist Eugenijus Ivanauskas; for their assistance — my colleagues at the Bank of Lithuania. The author Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės monetos / Coins of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania 7 Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės pinigų kolekcija Lietuvos banko Pinigų muziejuje / Collection of Coins of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania at the Money Museum of the Bank of Lithuania 1996–2014 Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės (LDK) pinigų kolekcijos kūrimo laikotarpis, kaip ir muziejaus istorija, labai trumpas. šilingai ir 1664 m. or- tas. Beveik visa kolekcija eksponuota

WHITEWHITE EAGLEEAGLE Journal OF THE POLISH NOBILITY ASSOCIATION Foundation Published semi-annually, provided to libraries in over 30 countries worldwide Spring/Summer 2007 Website: pnaf.us/ MILWAUKEE’S BAL MOSKOWY RECALLS POLAND’S GLORIOUS PAST AND A CELEBRATION OF ITS COLORFUL TRADITIONS The Polish Bal Moskowy, a formal costume dinner-ball and one of the highlights of Milwaukee’s social calendar took place February 3, 2007. As usual it was held at the elegant Wisconsin Club in downtown Milwaukee with monies raised going to support the Syrena Polish Dancers of Milwaukee. Attending the ball was Dr. Felix W. V.L. Holewinski, President of the Polish Nobility Association Foundation who has represented the Foundation at this event for several years. The highlight of the ball was the performance of the Syrena Dancers who danced the very popular Lancers Suit. Wearing the colorful uniforms of Napoleon’s Polish Lancers of the Imperial Guard, the dancers reenacted a typical formal ball held in Poland during the Napoleonic Wars. The dance medley consisted mostly of various mazurs (a dance popular with the Polish nobility) and ended with the sound of a bugle that signaled the Lancers to mount their horses and go to battle. As the Lancers march off with their sabers drawn, their elegantly gowned ladies bid them farewell. A sumptuous dinner was served before the dancing commenced and later during the ball the Grand Polonaise was danced, with everyone invited to join in, as pictured above. The colorful costumes and feathered masks were reminiscent of such balls which were popular with the Polish nobility during the 18th century and while a variety of period costumes were worn, a number of individuals wore period costumes of the Polish Nobility.

Rów- nież literaci ówczesnej doby, jak i późniejsi piśmiennicy uczynili ostatnią z Olel- kowiczów główną bohaterką utworów, nakreślając jej sylwetkę zgodnie z indywi- dualizmem swej twórczej fantazji; uczyniło to literackie wyobrażenia o księżnej interesującymi i intrygującymi zarazem .

  • The Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the Beginning of the 15Th
THE GRAND DUCHY OF LITHUANIA IN THE BEGINNING OF THE 15 TH CENTURY A er the death of Grand Duke Algirdas (1345–1377), his son Jogaila became the leader. In order to divert all a ention to the East, Jogaila signed a secret agreement with the Order, known as the Treaty of Dovydiškės, according to which the Order was free to a ack the lands belonging to Algirdas’ brother Kęstutis and his son, Vytautas. e Order informed Kęstutis of this agreement and in so doing initiated a civil war in Lithuania. At + rst, Kęstutis removed Jogaila from his seat of power, however, in 1382, Jogaila conquered Vilnius and imprisoned Kęstutis and Vytautas. Kęstutis was held prisoner in Krėva Castle, and was strangled by Jogaila’s servants. Vytautas managed to escape and sought protection with the Crusaders. Vytautas and Jogaila made peace in 1384, yet Jogaila once again failed to keep his promise to return Vytautas his fatherland, the Duchy of Trakai. In 1390–1392 Vytautas again appealed to the Order for assistance to go to war against Jogaila. Jogaila, who by now spent most of his time in Poland, could see that his appointed vicegerent, his brother Skirgaila, was unable to manage the internal opposition and so, once again made peace with Vytautas in 1392. at same year Vytautas became the actual leader of Lithuania, and o6 cially assumed this position in 1401. Wishing to reinforce Lithuania’s supremacy in the East – in the Ruzen and Tatars’ lands, Vytautas and the Order agreed on the Treaty of Salynas. According to this agreement, Vytautas relinquished Samogitia as far as Nevėžis and Kaunas as far as Rumšiškės to the Order.

  • History of the Crusades. Episode 290. the Baltic Crusades. the Samogitian Crusade Part XXII
History of the Crusades. Episode 290. The Baltic Crusades. The Samogitian Crusade Part XXII. Grand Master Konrad von Wallenrode. Hello again. Last week we followed the Crusaders on campaign to Lithuania, where the Crusaders attacked the Lithuanian town of Vilnius with the ultimate aim of securing the town, defeating Jogaila and Skirgaila, and elevating their man Vytautas to the position of ruler of Lithuania. None of these events came to pass, but it did result in one crusader, Henry Bolingbroke, the future King of England, drinking a lot of beer with his men. We also saw last week the death of Grand Master Konrad Zollner von Rothenstein and his replacement by another Konrad: Konrad von Wallenrode. Now, William Urban points out in his book "The Samogitian Crusade" that, as the current Grand Commander of the Teutonic Order, Konrad von Wallenrode was the obvious standout candidate to be elected as the next Grand Master. The Wallenrode family had played prominent roles inside the Teutonic Order for some time, and Konrad von Wallenrode had enjoyed success as Grand Commander. Despite this though, there were apparently significant misgivings inside the Teutonic Order about the appointment of Konrad von Wallenrode are to the position of Grand Master. Why? Well, because Konrad von Wallenrode was a military man, through and through. In fact, to say that Konrad von Wallenrode had little or no interest in religion wasn't too much of an exaggeration, and William Urban reports that Konrad took so little notice of priests and God that he was once accused of heresy. The worst fears of the religious men of the Order seemed to have been realised when, after being elected as Grand Master, one of Konrad von Wallenrode first acts was to reform the command structure inside the Order to increase his authority.

Dezember 2005 Gutachter: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Hans Hecker Univ.-Prof. Robert A. Friedl 2 INHALTSVERZEICHNIS Seite 1. EINLEITUNG 4 1.1.
