Como los caminos en la agreste geografía nacional, estos sorprendentes medios de comunicación llevan el bien y el mal; aún es temprano para saber si las bondades de estos mágicos adelantos conducirán a la sociedad a disfrutar de amplia cultura dentro de una mente y un cuerpo sano o vamos a la peor de las degradaciones sociales: más allá de Sodoma y Gomorra. Incuestionablemente que serán las autoridades, Gobernación y Educación, las responsables de la correcta regulación de la aplicación de esta maravilla del siglo XXI. Pero nosotros, el Patronato de Amigos del Patrimonio Histórico de Saltillo, el Colegio Coahuilense de Investigaciones Históricas, el Archivo Municipal de Saltillo y el Archivo General del Estado, llevamos adelante una tarea cultural iniciada hace más de seis años; a partir del 2007 estas instituciones, con el apoyo de los gobiernos estatal y 9 Revista Coahuilense de Historia municipal, cumplen cabalmente con la convocatoria lanzada oportunamente para dar vida, año con año, a las «Jornadas Culturales de Saltillo», foro abierto a favor de la sabiduría regional. Ahora, a los 435 años de la fundación de la vieja villa de Santiago del Satillo, se han de verificar la VI Jornadas del 19 al 21 de julio, dos mesas diarias, mañana y tarde; las matutinas en el Archivo Municipal y las vespertinas en el histórico Recinto de Juárez. Historiadores y cronistas participan en éstas con temas que están constreñidos a la cultura regional. Un reconocimiento a la maestra María Elena Santoscoy Flores, a Elsita de Valle, a Paty Gutiérrez, a Lucas Martínez, por el afán que interponen en favor de esta instancia; y, desde luego, un recuerdo fraterno a la memoria del maestro Jesús Alfonso Arreola Pérez. La Revista Coahuilense de Historia ha sido en estos años la memoria de dichos encuentros histórico-culturales. El presente número está dedicado a la recopilación de los temas que abordaron investigadores y cronistas que intervinieron en las Jornadas 2011. En las mesas de trabajo se abordaron los temas: Nómadas y peninsulares en el valle saltillense, con ponencias de Carlos Cárdenas Villarreal, M. Rodolfo Escobedo Díaz de León y Álvaro Canales Santos; Primeros asentamientos, ordenamientos y fundaciones en Saltillo y San Esteban, por Francisco Rodríguez Gutiérrez y Miguel Ángel Muñoz Borrego; Genealogía, imaginería y Reformas Borbónicas, tema abordado por Martha Durón Jiménez, Rodolfo Esparza Cárdenas, Arnoldo Hernández Torres, Arnoldo Ochoa Cortés y Luis Ricardo Díaz; Personajes e instituciones memorables y vida cotidiana, por Ricardo Raúl Palemrín Cordero, María Elena Santoscoy Flores, Santiago Rodríguez 10 Revista Coahuilense de Historia Martínez y Esperanza Dávila Sota; Insurgencia y Constitución, por Jorge Pedraza Salinas, Juana Gabriela Román Jáquez y por un servidor, y el tema Didáctica, economía y arte, comentado por Manuel H. Gil Vara, Jesús de León Montalvo y María Elena Santos Méndez de Huereca. El propósito de estas memorias a través de nuestra publicación es poner a disposición de los saltillenses y de los coahuilenses en general, interesantes temas sobre la historia de la región y despertar en ellos el interés por conocer el pasado de la tierra natal, ya que el presente que vivimos es precisamente fruto de aquél. Arturo Berrueto González Presidente del Colegio Coahuilense de Investigaciones Históricas 11 Revista Coahuilense de Historia 12 Nómadas y peninsulares en el valle saltillense (los orígenes) Revista Coahuilense de Historia Los guachichiles, primeros pobladores del valle de Saltillo –CARLOS CÁRDENAS VILLARREAL– Los guachichiles les pusieron el ejemplo a seguir a las demás etnias que poblaron el actual territorio de Coahuila desde hace diez o doce mil años, pues fueron los primeros en observar la llegada de los españoles en el 1575 y un poco más tarde a las familias tlaxcaltecas en 1590, traídas por los españoles para colonizar Saltillo. Por supuesto que fue una sorpresa conocer los primeros caballos. Los guachichiles, que poblaban en forma nomádica el sureste de Coahuila en donde se fundaría Saltillo y más tarde Arteaga y Ramos Arizpe, se opusieron desde un principio a los españoles y tlaxcaltecas al verse desplazados de los lugares donde cazaban, pescaban y recolectaban las frutas silvestres para completar su dieta alimenticia, entablándose una desigual lucha, pues los intrusos contaban con armas de fuego, armas de acero, tácticas de guerra modernas y la caballería; en contra del arco y la flecha, la lanza y el hacha, fueron eliminándolos poco a poco, matando hombres, mujeres y niños. La actitud guerrera de los guachichiles al defender lo que les pertenecía como primeros dueños del valle de Saltillo, fue 15 Revista Coahuilense de Historia seguida por los borrados y rayados de Ramos Arizpe, más tarde al llegar al centro de Coahuila, los coahuiltecos se enfrentan a españoles y tlaxcaltecas y en los cinco manantiales los lipanes también se oponen a los conquistadores. Al seguir las veredas de los grupos indígenas, los españoles fueron trazando el Camino Real hasta San Antonio de Béjar. En el suroeste también los pobladores primitivos, los irritilas, los laguneros y los salineros, dueños de esta parte de Coahuila luchan en contra de los intrusos hasta ser aniquilados; por último los contóteres de Sacramento, los tobosos de Cuatro Ciénegas y Ocampo y los comanches de Sierra Mojada, imitarían a los guachichiles de Saltillo hasta ser exterminados. Los guachichiles tuvieron que buscar abrigo en la parte norte de las montañas que circundan el valle de Saltillo para protegerse de los tlaxcaltecas y los españoles; de esta forma hemos encontrado su mensaje, su crónica en pinturas rupestres en la parte más alta del cerro del Pedregoso en el sureste del municipio de Saltillo, en la sierra de Palma Gorda y en la meseta de la sierra de Guajardo al noroeste de Saltillo y en la Mesa de las Tablas en Arteaga. Los guachichiles dejaron aportaciones importantes como la escalera, para bajar por ésta los cuerpos de los que morían a las cuevas mortuorias y sus veredas servirían para el trazo de las vías de comunicación modernas, por los cuatro puntos cardinales. A los guachichiles hay que considerarlos como los primeros cronistas de Saltillo, por el mensaje que nos dejaron en las 16 Revista Coahuilense de Historia rocas y los abrigos en forma de petroglifos y pinturas, respectivamente. Los guachichiles mucho después de la llegada de los españoles y tlaxcaltecas tuvieron al más notable de sus caudillos llamado Zapalinamé que en náhuatl quiere decir jefe de jefes es decir jefe religioso y guerrero. Scholarship appearing in the last decade has revealed the aWesome scope of this participation—involving hundreds of thousands of Indian allies—and cast critical light on their motiVations and experiences. NeVertheless this Work has remained restricted to central Mexico and areas south, while the region known as the Greater SouthWest, encompassing northern Mexico and the U.S. Southwest, has been largely ignored. This dissertation traces the moVements of Indians from central Mexico, especially Nahuas, into this region during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and charts their experiences as diasporic peoples under colonialism using sources they Wrote in their oWn language (Nahuatl). Their activities as laborers, soldiers, settlers, and agents of acculturation largely enabled colonial expansion in the region. However their exploits are too frequently cast as contributions to an overarching Spanish colonial project.

The treatise is really a compendium and digest of everything which Father Pichardo could find to throw light upon the question. How comprehensive and exhaustive the result was is shown by the bulk of these two volumes. Hickerson Spanish withdrawal and retrenchment, 1694-1709 The first Spanish missionary effort in East Texa~ began in 1690 with the arrival of a small party that left among the Hasinai Indians three Franciscan priests, accompanied by three soldiers. L The missioniz.ation of the Hasinai was undertaken as a reaction to the occupation of the Texas Gulf coast by the French explorer Rene Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle during the 16ROs. Despite an optimistic beginning, the Spaniards were forced to abandon their mission only three years later when the hostility of the Hasinai compelled them to flee. The Hasinai, who initially welcomed the Europeans, had suffered a series of severe epidemics for which they correctly blamed the Spaniards. They were further angered by the priests' persistent attempts to convert them to Catholicism, as well as the failure of the Spanish soldiers to aid them in battles against the Apaches and other enemies.-' After the retreat from the East Texas mission in 1693, the Spanish had little direct documented contact with the Hasinai for more than two decades.

XXXIII JULY, 1958 NO.3 ADRIAN WOLL: FRENCHMAN IN THE MEXICAN MILITARY SERVICE By JOSEPH MILTON NANCE* HIS is a biographical sketch of a rather prominent and T influential "soldier of fortune" whose integrity, honesty, attention to duty, and gentlemanly conduct most Texans of the days of the Republic respected, even if they disliked the government he so often represented. Adrian Won was born a Frenchman on December 2, 1795, in St. Germain-en-Laye, near Paris, and educated for the military profession. He served under the First Empire as a lieutenant of a regiment of lancers of the imperial guard.1 Since his regiment was composed largely of Poles, won has sometimes mistakenly been represented as being of Polish nationality. In 1815 he was captain adjutant major in the 10th Legion of the National Guard of the Seine.2 Upon the restoration of the Bourbons in France, won went to New York, thence to Baltimore, Maryland, with letters of intro­ duction to General Winfield Scott who befriended him and, no doubt, pointed out to him the wonderful opportunities offered by the revolutionary disturbances in Mexico to a young man of energy, skilled in the arts of a soldier.
