Leucophyllum langmaniae 'Rio Bravo' (Langman's Sage, Rio Bravo Texas Ranger) Langman's Sage is a hybrid of the native species of foothills and dry washes of the southwest and Mexico. It has small silver or green leaves, and violet blue flowers. Do not require pruning. To plant in well drained soil, in partial to full sun. Needs occationally watering. To some, one Leucophyllum looks like any other, while in reality Southern Arizona there are some key differences about these new ones that set them apart from Leucophyllum frutescens. These newly avail- Landscapes able species and cultivars deserve closer inspection. Generic Description Leucophyllum is a New World genus that has always been considered as a member of the family Scrophulariaceae. How- ever, its relative position has been a topic of debate among Greg Starr botanists. Some have even suggested that it belongs in the 3 340 W. Ruthann Rd. family Myoporaceae (Henrickson & Flyr, 1985). However, that is not the subject of this paper so we will leave the controversy Tucson, Arizona 85745 for others to settle. According to Henrickson & Flyr (1985), the genus consists of twelve species occurring in arid parts of Mexico, southern Texas, and one locality in extreme southern New Mexico. All species are woody shrubs growing to 0.5 -3 meters (1.6 -10 feet) high and nearly as wide. Stems may be upright or nearly horizontal. FIowers for all species occur singly in upper leafaxils. In nature, the best floral displays usually occur after a summer rain storm or during periods of high humidity.

Nature’s Notebook Phenophase Photo Guide Leucophyllum frutescens Texas barometer bush Why Observe? Species marked for inclusion in the Nature’s Notebook monitoring program have been identified by scientists or natural resource managers as ecologically important for the Sonoran Desert region. Many Sonoran Desert species have not been observed nor studied as closely as other species in the United States. They are the standard bearer of the Sonoran Desert Region. Tips for Identification Leucophyllum frutescens is an evergreen shrub in the figwort family, native to the state of Texas in the southwestern United States and the states of Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas in northern Mexico. Although commonly known as Texas sage, it is not a true sage and is distinct from the genus Salvia. The species is also called Texas Ranger, Texas rain sage, cenizo, Texas silverleaf, Texas Patty Guertin. The solitary axillary flowers are bell- or funnel- shaped, with five lobes and two lips. DRAEGER, Comanche Ranch, Carrizo Springs, TX 78834, USA ABSTRACT Density‐dependent behavior underpins white‐tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) theory and man- agement application in North America, but strength or frequency of the phenomenon has varied across the geographic range of the species. The modifying effect of stochastic environments and poor‐quality habitats on density‐dependent behavior has been recognized for ungulate populations around the world, including white‐ tailed deer populations in South Texas, USA. Despite the importance of understanding mechanisms influencing density dependence, researchers have concentrated on demographic and morphological implications of deer density. Researchers have not focused on linking vegetation dynamics, nutrition, and deer dynamics. We con- ducted a series of designed experiments during 2004–2012 to determine how strongly white‐tailed deer density, vegetation composition, and deer nutrition (natural and supplemented) are linked in a semi‐arid environment where the coefficient of variation of annual precipitation exceeds 30%. We replicated our study on 2 sites with thornshrub vegetation in Dimmit County, Texas. During late 2003, we constructed 6 81‐ha enclosures sur- rounded by 2.4‐m-tall woven wire fence on each study site.

The past and present members of the Simpson, Jansen, Linder, and Theriot labs have been wonderful friends and colleagues. From teaching me the ropes in lab and helping me to understand phylogenetic analyses, to exploring Austin together and traveling to meetings across the country, each of these people has helped me along the way.
