Vista Dei Forti Porto Ercole, Tuscany Vista dei Forti Porto Ercole, Tuscany Sleeps 6 guests, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms DESCRIPTION Maritime pine and palm trees, tall cypresses, shrubs and colourful geraniums help create the perfect Mediterranean atmosphere of the lush, south facing garden surrounding Vista dei Forti, where gazebos and shaded terraces have been thoughtfully designed to maximize the outdoor living space for a relaxing holiday. Traditionally built and furnished with Italian country furniture, this villa will give you the real taste of Italy’s relaxing lifestyle and would make the ideal base to explore the entire Argentario peninsula. In fact, just 1.5 km away is Porto Ercole, one of the two harbour towns of the peninsula, (the other one being Porto Santo Stefano, with a regular ferry service to Isola del Giglio), offering a selection of small shops, restaurants, pavement cafes and a charming marina. All around Monte Argentario you have a wide range of beaches to choose from, as well as tennis courts, horse-riding and an 18-hole golf course. Recommended day trips may include the picturesque hilltop town of Capalbio and the splendid natural park of Uccellina, on the Tuscan mainland or the unique Etruscan heritage in Tarquinia, northern Lazio. INSIDER TIPS A small villa ideally placed to explore Tuscany, Lazio and Umbria, which enjoys the sea views from its elevated position. You will love the terracotta colour of this property which sits in a totally secluded setting. If you don't fancy eating at the villa, why not try Osteria dei Nobili Santi in Porto Ercole (incidentally, Porto Ercole is listed among the 'Borghi più belli d'Italia' = Italy's most beautiful villages)? The service is great and the food is even better; I never thought you could prepare so many delicious dishes with pumpkin flowers! The wine is also worth tasting and so are the chef's fresh pasta creations. The easy access to Isola del Giglio, and three of the most impressive regions of central Italy, namely Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio is only one of the reasons for staying at Vista dei Forti. SERVICES Included: 2 hours maid service 3 times per week. WiFi internet. Pool towels.Extras: Winter heating & air conditioning (for excessive use beyond 300 kw/h). Use of mobile phone at the villa, on request. A local tourist tax payable locally may apply. PHOTOS .

  • Southern Tuscany
© Lonely Planet SOUTHERN TUSCANY 3 PERFECT DAYS DAY 1 // MEDIEVAL ELBOW ROOM Although lacking in eye-popping sights, the atmospheric and compelling historic centres of Grosseto ( p220 ) and Massa Marittima ( p222 ) off er one of the rarest ameni- ties in Tuscany: personal space. Well guarded from extraneous vehicle traffi c, both are prime spots for the passeggiata (traditional evening stroll), and with tour buses roaring to higher-profi le cities up north, your quiet sit-down and medieval reverie on the steps of the respective cathedrals will be nigh undisturbed. Respectable museums and select eating options make either city worthy of a sleepover. DAY 2 // A COASTAL CALL The southern coast is relatively serene area, Monte Argentario in high season notwith- standing. All the nature and exercise you need can be found within Parco Regionale della Maremma ( p225 ). The towns of Orbetello ( p226 ), Porto Santo Stefano ( p226 ) and Porto Ercole ( p227 ) cumulatively contain seaside diversions, narrow lanes, outstanding eating and calf-blasting climbs to tenaciously located forts. The latter two bookend the some- times dangerously overcrowded Via Panoramica, a circular route off ering coastal views. DAY 3 // AN ETRUSCAN TOUR A number of arresting Etruscan sites pepper Tuscany’s southern extent. The extensive walls, foundations and roads at Roselle ( p220 ) are well worth the detour, and Satur- nia ( p229 ) and the Ghiaccio Forte abitato Etrusco ( p229 ) are powerful draws, but the strongest cluster of sites is in the area around Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano ( p230 ). There you can explore extensive tombs ( p232 ), vie cave (sunken roads; p232 ) and even the Vitozza rock caves ( p232 ), fi rst inhabited in prehistoric times.

Florence is beautiful, si- ena is effortlessly romantic and Pisa is breathtaking, but there is a whole other side of this region that embodies a simpler time. While tourists flock to the bright lights, italians take their leave in the medieval towns and villages that are strewn across the tuscan country- Eside. they explore the castles carved into rock by renaissance dukes, take a dip on the island where napoleon bonaparte spent his exile and enjoy a bite at a 100-years-old trattoria.
