Railroad Paint Color Reference RAILROAD PAINT AND COLOR REFERENCE Compiled by: Eric Schlentner Big E Productions, LLC The following data has been compiled from many sources including online, user submissions and di- rect inquiry. This information has been edited, corrected and compiled into the reference list that fol- lows. Currently, the list is divided into the following sections: • Diesel & Passenger Cars • Pullman Company • Steam • Freight Cars • Structures More sections will be added as necessary. Where information is available, interior colors are included. We encourage all users of this list to submit corrections if needed as well as new information on current formulations and colors to be added to the list. Including provenance is especially appreciated, almost mandatory. We can be contacted through our website contact page at: https://bigeprod.com/contact/contact.html Other Contact Information: Big E Productions, LLC PO Box 19176 New Franklin, OH 44319 (234) 542-7754 Please note that this list is formatted to print on 8-1/2” X 14” legal size paper. Disclaimer: The list is “Use at your own risk”, not everything has been verified. This is also a “living” document subject to change without notice. Notes: E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. Prefixes and Suffixes DuPont was the preeminent paint and coatings supplier to the railroad industry. We’re slowly build- ing a list of DuPont prefixes and suffixes to help decipher the older product lines. We’ll add more as we learn more. Additions and corrections would be welcome. Original DuPont Products: Duco - nitrocellulose lacquer Dulux - alkyd enamel Lucite - acrylic lacquer Centari - acrylic enamel Imron - polyurethane Note: In most cases, the same color number could be used with the different product lines. Some common Prefixes: Duco: 202, 241, 243, 246, 254, 259 Dulux: 83, 88, 93, 166, 234 Primer: 63 Interior Color: 68 Lucite: 890 Some later DuPont Codes, no prefix, suffix denotes: A=Centari D=Dulux J=Cronar K=Chromabase L=Lucite U=Imron Current Applicability of Historic DuPont Codes DuPont started changing their product line in the ’90s. The higher VOC and heavy metal pigment products were discontinued and were replaced by new formulations with a new coding system that did not correlate to the old system. In 2014 DuPont sold their industrial coatings division to Axalta. Axalta has their own code system. The only way reliable to get a color match to historic Du- Pont colors is to send a color sample to your supplier for scanning. Ditzler and PPG Codes: The old color codes are still valid and can be used by the PPG Industrial Coatings lab to make cur- rent formulations. Be aware that the sheen would likely be different which may affect the color’s appearance in varying light. They’ll work to get as close of a color match as possible. These differ- ences are due to current VOC requirements and the lack of heavy metal pigments. It’s best to also send a sample if you have one. Other Manufacturers’ Codes: We’ve not yet investigated on whether other manufacturers’ codes are still valid. If you have any information on the validity of other codes, please feel free to contact us and let us know. Pantone Colors: Pantone is best known for its Pantone Matching System (PMS), a proprietary color space used in a variety of industries, such as graphic design, fashion design, product design, printing and manu- facturing and supporting the management of color from design to production, in physical and digital formats, among coated and uncoated materials, cotton, polyester, nylon and plastics. Pan- tone and paint color formulations do not cross as they are different systems for different processes. However, if you want your paint to match a specific Pantone color card, send the card to the coat- ings manufacturer’s lab to have it scanned and formulated. Where we do have a match to a specific Pantone color, the Pantone color number is provided. Munsell Color System: Munsell is an international color defining standard based on Hue (color), Value (light or dark), and Chroma (intensity). When available, we’ve added Munsell notation. These can be used by your sup- plier to help determine the color. Credits: Where large amounts of data have been supplied and confirmed by others, “footnote” numbers have been added to provide credit where credit is due. 1 Data supplied and confirmed by Dennis Storzek 2 Data supplied and confirmed by Fred Heilich 3 Data supplied and confirmed by Eric Schlentner, 4 Data supplied and confirmed by Bob Webber, Pullman Library 5 Data supplied and confirmed by Alan Maples, Everett Railroad Susan Yosten has provided a large amount of PRR color data by PRR account reference numbers some of which have been included here. CHICAGO — Three suburban Chicago members of Metra’s board of directors have taken the unusual move of penning a newspaper opinion- editorial expressing their concern about the commuter railroad's “dire” capital funding crisis and warning of potential service cuts. “Without a large infusion of funding from the state of Illinois, we likely will have to shrink the Metra system to match our shrinking resources. If that happens, it will impact our communities and scores of others all across northeast Illinois,” said the op-ed, published Friday in the suburban Daily Herald. The three directors include Rodney Craig, mayor of Hanover Park; Timothy Baldermann, mayor of New Lenox, and Don De Graff, mayor of South Holland. Their op-ed is part of a campaign by Metra to urge passengers and the public to press legislators in Illinois' capital city, Springfield, to approve a state infrastructure bond program. The mayors cited a recent white paper commissioned by Metra and prepared by the Rail Transportation and Engineering Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This paper says the failure to spend $1 in preventive maintenance now can cost $4 in deferred maintenance later.

Tillitson collection on railroads creator: Tillitson, George E. Identifier/Call Number: M0165 Physical Description: 50.5 Linear Feet(9 cartons and 99 manuscript storage boxes) Date (inclusive): 1880-1959 Abstract: Notes on the history of railroads in the United States and Canada. Tillitson, 1955. Special Notes One very useful feature of the material is further described in the two attached pages. This is the carefully annotated study of a good many of the important large railroads of the United States complete within their own files, these to be found within the official state of incorporation. Here will be included page references to the frequently huge number of small short-line roads that usually wound up by being “taken in” to the larger and expending Class II and I roads. Some of these files, such as the New York Central or the Pennsylvania Railroad are very big themselves. Michigan, Wisconsin, Oregon, and Washington are large because the many lumber railroads have been extensively studied out.

It is hoped that railfans, researchers and historians will find these indexes to be of use in obtaining information about all aspects of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, affectionately known as The ‘Katy’. NOTE: This document is available only as a pdf download; the practice of producing cds has been discontinued. Also, the ‘major articles’ master index has been discontinued; It is redundant with the superior search capability of Adobe®. ‘Major’ articles may be identified in the annual indexes by their (usually mulitiple) page length. Created in 1965, the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) is an interstate, intercounty and intercity agency which provides continuing, comprehensive and coordinated planning for the orderly growth and development of the Delaware Valley region. The region includes Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties as well as the City of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania and Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, and Mercer counties in New Jersey. The Commission is an advisory agency which divides its planning and service functions between the Office of the Executive Director, the Office of Public Affairs, and three line Divisions: Transportation Planning, Regional Planning, and Administration. DVRPC's mission for the 1990s is to emphasize technical assistance and services and to conduct high priority studies for member state and local governments, while determining and meeting the needs of the private sector. The DVRPC logo is adapted from the official seal of the Commission and is designed as a stylized image of the Delaware Valley. The outer ring symbolizes the region as a whole while the diagonal bar signifies the Delaware River flowing through it.
