(Lamiaceae) is a perennial aromatic herb, which is widespread in the high altitude areas of the central and eastern parts of South Africa and also occurs in southwest Botswana and central Namibia. It is closely related to Salvia runcinata L. f. and Salvia repens Burch, ex Benth., with which it forms a species complex. The most recent revision of southern African Salvia species is that by Codd (1985). In this revision, the most important characters used in delimiting the three taxa were corolla size, calyx size and trichome density. As a result of intergrading morphological characters, the specific limits between the three taxa are not clear and positive identification of typical material is often difficult. Taxonomic delimitation through use of chemical characters was therefore the principle objective of this study. The taxa represented in this species complex are known in folk medicine and plant extracts have been used in the treatment of urticaria, body sores, and stomach ailments and as a disinfectant. -

ANUALLY-constructed keys to many groups of the Egyptian flora are in urgent Mneed of improvement and updating. To construct a conventional substitute of the key to representatives of the Lamiaceae, a data matrix was compiled to include 48 characters recorded for each of the 52 species (with three subspecies and one variety) belonging to 24 genera which represent this family in the flora of Egypt. The 48 characters were accurately defined to cover as much of the easily observable aspects of vegetative and floral variation in the plants as possible. The data matrix was analyzed using the key-generating package of programs DELTA. The analysis produced a conventional key with a detailed description of every species in terms of the 48 characters. The key is decidedly a marked improvement over its predecessors in that it is strictly comparative. Amazingly, more than 80% of the global populations nowadays adopt phytotherapy as a basic source of maintaining good healthy conditions, owing to the pronounced side effects, non-availability, and expensive nature of conventional treatment options. A number of medicinal plants had been resourceful (effective) against a range of diseases, with few developed into drugs based on the available phytotherapeutics, quite a large number of them are yet to scale through clinical trials to determine their safety and efficacy. The origin of the medicinal plants use had been since time immemorial and traced back to Europe and Egypt many centuries ago. The first records of knowledge documentation were, however, produced by Shen Nung (a Chinese emperor) 2500 BC ago, describing different recipes of drug preparation from 300 medicinal plants for the management of numerous human diseases (1). Labiatae Family Labiatae (Lamiacea) Family contain about 200 genera and 3000 species one of the largest genus of the family Salvia L., is wide distributed in a lot of regions of world(2). This family is widely distributed in temperate places of the world such as the Mediterranean and Irano- Turanian biogeographic zones of Jordan (3). There are many representatives of this family and each one of these representatives have various pharmacological activities among these are analgesic, anti-inflammatory (4), anti- oxidant, anti-bacterial (5), anti-tumour and central nervous system depressant activities (6). -

EL-NAGGAR 1 The Herbarium, Faculty of Science, Cairo University, Giza 12613, Egypt *author for correspondence; Email: [email protected] 2 Botany Department, Faculty of Science, Assiut University, Egypt ABSTRACT The species distribution and biogeography of the Egyptian Tubiflorae were examined in detail. We found 284 species of vascular plants belonging to 96 genera and 12 families, making the Egyptian Tubiflorae richer in species than that of other arid region floras: Libya and Saudi Arabia. The most species rich families were Scrophulariaceae, Boraginaceae, Labitae, Convolvulaceae and Solanaceae, constituting more than 85% of the total species in the order. The generic spectrum dominated by a suite of species-rich genera (Convolvulus, Heliotropium, Veronica, Solanum, Salvia, Cuscuta, Echium, Ipomoea and Orobanche). Therophytes were the most dominant life forms among the families, followed by chamaephytes and hemicryptophytes. Boraginaceae and Scrophulariaceae had the highest share of annuals. Remarkable distribution patterns of the life forms in the seven studied biogeographic zones were noticed. Trees were dominant in the Mediterranean zone, while shrubs, perennial herbs and therophytes were dominant in the Sinai. Altogether 8 endemic species and 14 near-endemics were included in the Tubiflorae of Egypt; mostly from southern Sinai. We found that Labiatae and Scrophulariaceae were the families with higher concentration of endemics. Notably, Teucrium was among the genera of the Mediterranean Africa with highest endemism. -

Gates, Co-Advisor Professor Siobhan Fennessy Professor Dawn Gibas Ferris Professor Richard Moore c Copyright by Katie Hossler 2010 ABSTRACT This dissertation details a comprehensive study of the ecology and development of the soil and carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycles in freshwater marshes. Beyond broadening our understanding of wetland development and ecology, this work intents to enlighten evaluation of wetland mitigation policy, as well as facilitate the success of wetland creation projects. Ten created and five natural freshwater marshes of central Ohio are the focus throughout the study. One of the central chapters (Ch. 3) compares structure and function between created and natural wetlands. The most important finding is that there are significant differences between created and natural wetland soils; this leads to smaller nutrient stocks and slower nutrient cycles in the created wetlands. Time-to-equilibrium estimates for the development of soil and nutrient-related functions are explored in Ch. 4. It is determined that overcoming these differences will require more time than is acceptable for most mitigation policies. The final two chapters explore the habit and ecology of arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) in created and natural marshes. The presence of AM was high in both created and natural wetlands and across created wetland age. -

Taeckholmia 34: 101-127. Nutlet morphology of 28 taxa belonging to 15 genera of Lamiaceae were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. The taxa included representatives of the three subfamilies Ajugoideae, Lamioideae and Nepetoideae which all collected especially from Sinai, Egypt. Morphological characters, including nutlet shape, color, size; hilum (shape, length x width and position); epidermal cell shape; anticlinal walls (level, undulation, thickness and secondary sculpture); outer periclinal cell walls (level and secondary sculpture) are presented. The reticulate type was the most common among the studied taxa. Four types of basic anticlinal cell wall boundaries were recognized and many different shapes of the outer periclinal cell wall were described. Nutlet ornamentation, shape, size, colour and particularly hilum characters proved to be good taxonomic characters for the Egyptian Lamiaceae taxa. A key for the identification of the investigated taxa based on nutlet characters is provided. Key words: Lamiaceae, nutlet morphology, SEM, Egypt. Introduction Lamiaceae (Labiatae) is one of the largest angiospermic families, includes 236 genera and about 7173 species. They are almost cosmopolitan but absent from the coldest regions of high altitude or latitude, including many well-known plants, herbs, shrubs and trees of horticultural, economic and medicinal significance (Harley et al. 2004). Hedge (1992) recognized six regions of high Labiatae diversity.
