This year also saw international experts being part of the judges’ panel as they vet the entries right from the start and picked the 10 finalists whose designs were transformed into prototypes for the final round of judging and display at MIFF, held at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) recently.

Promoting Youth Volunteerism @ This strategic collaboration will see the formation of the Hospitality, Tourism and Taylor’s University Culinary Arts School at the region’s first integrated luxury destination, Desaru Taylor’s University Receives MOHE’S Coast. Taylor’s University made history by obtaining the highly coveted ‘Tier 6: SPOTLIGHT Outstanding’ rating in the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education’s Discipline- World Class Graduates with an Edge Based Rating System (D-SETARA) recently. Food & Beverage lecturer, Mr. Justin Ho, also took home the ‘Coach of the Year’ award in this competition. “Winning the Nestlé Professional Culinary Arts Award for three consecutive years shows the quality of our academic staff in developing our students into high achievers. As we were also unbeatable in the Nescafé Milano Coffee Challenge this year, it is a proof that we are ready to take on the challenges thrown to us in both the culinary and F&B industry,” said Mr. Neethiahnanthan Ari Ragavan, Dean of Taylor’s University School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (TCHT).

Established in 2006, the Nestlé Professional Culinary Arts Award and the Nescafé Milano Coffee Challenge which started three years ago aimed at further lifting the standards of culinary arts and barista coffee and working with F&B associations to create awareness on food and personal hygiene for food and beverage handlers. Both are regarded as the only prominent awards in Malaysia to recognise young talents in culinary arts and F&B.

This year’s competitions saw participants from University, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Dungun, UiTM Penang, Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University College (KLMU), INTI University, Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNITAR), Legend International College of Hospitality and Tourism, Food Institute of Malaysia, Berjaya University College of Hospitality, Kolej Bandar Utama, Cybernatics International College of Technology, YTL College of Hotel Management Politeknik Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin and community colleges competing for the titles.

This year’s competitions are also recognised by the Department of Skills Development (Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran, JPK) established under the Ministry of Human Resources, for the purpose of promoting and coordinating skills training strategy and programmes in keeping with Malaysia’s development needs.

Taylor’s School of Computing and IT (SOCIT) students, Teoh Han Hui, and SPOTLIGHT Choong Jun Jin, showcased their strong knowledge and skills in computer World Class Graduates with an Edge programming by winning the grand prize and the Merit Award, respectively, at the eGenting Programming Competition 2012. Promoting Youth Volunteerism @ Taylor’s University Teoh Han Hui and Choong Jun Jin, students of the Bachelor of Computer Science Taylor’s University Receives MOHE’S (RMIT) degree programme at Taylor’s University, competed against over 100 Highest D-SETARA Rating participants from various institutions of higher learning in Malaysia. Han Hui walked ACHIEVEMENTS & away with RM6, 000 cash prize – emerging as the champion of the competition, RECOGNITION while Jun Jin received a merit award and a hotel voucher. The prize giving ceremony was held at Hotel Novotel, Kuala Lumpur in January this year. The annual eGenting Programming Competition is supported by Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) to provide great opportunities to students from institutions of higher learning in Malaysia. The competition is designed to demonstrate participants’ programming skills using any of the latest software platforms and programming languages. The first programming competition was held in 2002 and internally administered by eGenting.

The Big Kahuna Wins Rip Curl Window Creative Display Competition More than just a tuition programme, PACE combines academic support and mentoring to help academically low-performing students from disadvantaged RESEARCH & backgrounds. The academic support will be in the form of tuition classes in three COMMERCIALISATION core subjects – English, Bahasa Malaysia and Mathematics. The classes will be taught by teachers from the schools or retired teachers. “The collaboration with a non- profit organisation like The Edge Education Foundation is in line with Taylor’s University’s direction towards equipping students with the Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities, ensuring that they have the necessary life skills and value-added educational experience that go beyond merely obtaining discipline-specific knowledge,” said Pradeep Nair, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Taylor’s University.

He added that Taylor’s Business School is paving the way within the university in developing graduates through a holistic education that focuses on values. The introduction of the Pradeep Nair, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Taylor’s new Community Service Module University delivering his welcome address. in the school will encourage students to play an informed and active role in sharing their knowledge and expertise with underprivileged communities, and mould the students into becoming highly-employable graduates with a conscience, he added.

“A lot of people want to help top-performing students. But TEEF and its partners, Ernst & Young and Taylor’s University, have decided to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are not meeting the grade in school. We recognise that it’s going to be a huge challenge. But we believe that by combining academic support and mentoring, and by equipping these students with life skills, we will be able to help change lives, one student at a time,” said Dorothy Teoh, Chief Executive Officer of The Edge Education Foundation. Teoh was the foundation’s signatory for the MOUs with the two partners.

She added that Boston Consulting Group’s analysis found that community-based education which encompasses academic support, mentoring, and parental support and involvement can re-engage students and create the conditions needed for them to succeed.

The Malaysia Education Blueprint also noted international research showing that schools which engage with businesses, civic organisations, and higher education institutions enjoy benefits that include higher grades and lower student absenteeism. PACE has also received the support of Performance Management and Delivery Unit (PEMANDU).

“We are supportive of this effort as every bit helps to improve our public education system. The Government recognises and encourages the contribution and value of public-private partnerships, to achieve the common goal of improving student outcomes,” said Tengku Nurul Azian Tengku Shahriman, Director of the Education area for both the National Key Results Areas (NKRA) and National Key Economic Areas (NKEA) under PEMANDU.

The signed MOUs which are for a period of three years will see the three partners working with two schools in a pilot project that will involve about 40 students from low-income homes. PACE will kick start in April 2013 in two schools, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Methodist Sentul and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Convent Sentul in Kuala Lumpur.

Recognising the need for dialogue in the field of student affairs governance locally, SPOTLIGHT University of Malaya and Taylor’s University jointly organised the first ever national World Class Graduates with an Edge conference on Student Affairs Governance. The four-day conference, launched by the Ministry of Higher Education’s chief secretary, Datuk Ab. Rahim Md. Noor on Promoting Youth Volunteerism @ Taylor’s University 26 February, was rife with discussions on issues central to today’s youth, including social media, volunteerism, entrepreneurship and the role of student affairs. Taylor’s University Vice Chancellor and President, Professor Dato’ Dr. Hassan Said, also a session panellist, said one of the aims of the conference is identifying areas of administrative reform for student affairs departments at all higher education institutions within the country.

“Education institutions should embrace and move with advancements in technology, even in their core practices. We should also place more emphasis on the development of soft skills in our graduates as employers these days look for a well-rounded graduate and not just an academically-sound graduate,” he said.

The event, held at One World Hotel, Petaling Jaya, was supported by the Ministry of Higher Education and Asia Pacific Student Services Association.

World Class Graduates with an Edge A creative and colourful surfboards-based window display did wonders for The Big Promoting Youth Volunteerism @ Kahuna, a group of students in their second year of the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Taylor’s University Graphic Communication Design at Taylor’s University as they won the Rip Curl Taylor’s University Receives MOHE’S Window Creative Display Competition, beating their fellow seniors who were also Highest D-SETARA Rating in the final four. “They had the opportunity to obtain briefs from their ‘clients’, think out-of-the-box and work within tight timeline to create a window display when the stores are closed at night.”

“I am really proud of the students’ work and attitude throughout the process and I congratulate them for a job very well done,” said Mr. Tan.

The Rip Curl Window Creative Display Competition was opened to all TDS students where four groups were shortlisted to proceed to the finals where they were able to bring their designs into real life window displays at Rip Curl stores around Klang Valley. Winners were then picked through numbers of ‘likes’ received on Rip Curl’s Facebook page.
