Scientific paper Creation and Analysis of the Yugoslav Rock Song Lyrics Corpus from 1967 to 20031 UDC 811.163.41’322 DOI 10.18485/infotheca.2019.19.1.1 Ljudmila Petković ABSTRACT: The paper analyses the pro- [email protected] cess of creation and processing of the Yu- University of Belgrade goslav rock song lyrics corpus from 1967 to Belgrade, Serbia 2003, from the theoretical and practical per- spective. The data have been obtained and XML-annotated using the Python program- ming language and the libraries lyricsmas- ter/yattag. The corpus has been preprocessed and basic statistical data have been gener- ated by the XSL transformation. The diacritic restoration has been carried out in the Slovo Majstor and LeXimir tools (the latter appli- cation has also been used for generating the frequency analysis). The extraction of socio- cultural topics has been performed using the Unitex software, whereas the prevailing top- ics have been visualised with the TreeCloud software. KEYWORDS: corpus linguistics, Yugoslav rock and roll, web scraping, natural language processing, text mining. The thesis was conducted under the supervision of the Prof. Dr Ranka Stanković,who contributed to the topic’s formulation, with the remark that the year of 1945 was replaced by the year of 1967 in this paper.

Akto is a regional festival for contemporary art which includes visual arts, performing arts, music and theory of culture. The main objective of Akto Festival is to open the cultural frameworks of a modern society through “recomposing” and redifning them in a new context. The programme of the festival is based on two concepts. The frst concept is space/location_ Locations have been transformed in terms of their previous meanings. The basic idea of the festival is art pieces to come out of the standard location (galleries, museums, theatres) used for presenting art, and their setting up in new location. Re-moving of the pieces into new location transforms the piece itself (according to the parameter space). The second concept is the topic of the festival_ The topic of Akto_4 festival is Generations. The artistic pieces (according to the parameter Generations) are going to be presented in two categories: artistic pieces that have generations as a basic starting point and pieces that are transformation of an already fnished artistic forms (also according to the parameter Generations). The “new” piece is transformed from its basic form. It has new statics and dynamics. Fortified by huge meat-kebab dinners and Turkish coffees from Belgrade's myriad cafes, crowds of night owls line up to partake variously of Gypsy bands, electronic mixes, rock 'n' roll and a distinctly Serbian hybrid known as Turbofolk. As a parade of Puma-clad feet files down the metal gangway to a club called Exile, the night's marquee D.J., the New York City-based techno producer John Selway, prepares for his 2-to-6 a.m. set. "The most fun places to play are here, South America and Japan!" he shouts over rapid-fire industrial beats, praising the energy of the night life in the capital of Serbia and Montenegro, the name for what is left of Yugoslavia after its unraveling in the early 90's. "They're interested in new music and in building a scene!" Across the water, the lighted dome of St. Sava Church and illuminated stone walls of the centuries-old Kalemegdan Fortress hover over the capital's skyline. Watching as border control checks turn into improvised snapshot sessions, admiring mutant iron-curtain Disney toys, buying souvenir grenade shell handicrafts and discovering sniper art in blown-out apartments, they find that truth may indeed be stranger than fiction. A combination of stop-motion animation and documentary scenes, the film turns into a roller coaster ride through a parallel universe where all borders are disintegrating - simultaneously tragic, poetic and bleakly funny. The dictator is an archetype growing in popularity in the media as well as within popular culture. Follow- ing the high demand and the lack of specimens with proper qualities, the term is increasingly applied to candidates that hardly fit the qualifications but rather appear as bland and uninspired copies. Max Andersson and Lars Sjunnesson make their own very personal copy of a true dictator of the old school, and also the most genuine of Yugoslav products - Tito; made out of styrofoam and papier-mâché and sporting Swedish swimming school medals on his second-hand East German uniform.

Music as a weapon of ethnopolitical violence and conflict: processes of ethnic separation during and after the break-up of Yugoslavia1 Catherine Baker Abstract: Using illustrations from the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s and their aftermath, this paper argues that understanding popular music and public discourses about it can help to understand the dynamics of ethnopolitical conflict. Studies of war and conflict have approached music as political communication, as an object of securitization, as a means of violence, and as a symbol of ethnic difference, while international law in the context of another case of collective violence, Rwanda, has even begun to question whether performing or broadcasting certain music could constitute incitement to genocide. Drawing on post- structuralist perspectives on the media and ethnicization in conflicts, this paper explores and interrogates the discourse of popular music as a weapon of war that was in use during and after the violent break-up of Yugoslavia. Music during the Yugoslav wars was used as a tool of humiliation and violence in prison camps, was used to provoke fear of the ethnic Other in line with a strategy of ethnic cleansing and was conceptualized as a morale asset for the troops of one’s own side. A discourse of music as a weapon of war was also in use and persisted after the war, when its referent was shifted to associate music-as-a-weapon not to the brave and defiant in-group so much as the aggressive Other. This was then turned against a wider range of signifiers than those who had directly supported the Other’s troops and had the effect of perpetuating ethnic separation and obstructing the re-formation of a (post- )Yugoslav cultural space.

1 Novosadska alternativna rok scena XX veka Bogomir Mijatović Ljudi će doživeti šok kada shvate da su napredne misli današnjice nedovoljno napredne za sutra. Misliti misli sutrašnjice je oblik budućeg života. (Kristofer Morli, 1890–1957) Nepoznavanje, ili površno poznavanje, jedne epohe, jedne zemlje, jednog naroda i njegove kulture, umetnosti uopšte, često nas vodi u pogrešnom pravcu čiji su krajnji ishodi predrasude a jedini mogući zaključak, ukoliko smo skloni svemu navedenom, je, najblaže rečeno, da nismo svesni svog neznanja, odnosno da uživamo u samouverenom neznanju. S obzirom na to da smo o novostvorenoj slovenskoj državi po okončanju Prvog svetskog rata veoma malo učili u školama, čak i sami smo imali mnogobrojne predrasude o tom vremenu previđajući pritom nesporne činjenice da su u toj državi pokrenuti Radio Zagreb, Radio Ljubljana i Radio Beograd, da su se u njoj pojavile i prve prodavnice muzikalija (kako su ih zvali), u kojima su pored instrumenata mogle da se kupe originalne šelak ploče (krte bakelitne singl ploče formata kasnijeg LP-ja, koje su imale 78 obrtaja u minutu) poznatih svetskih diskografskih kuća His Master's Voice, Polydor, Columbia, RCA i drugih, ali i jedine domaće izdavačke kuće Edison Bell Penkala Ltd, koju je 1926. osnovala izdavačka kuća Edison Bell s naslednicima Eduarda Penkale, izumitelja nalivpera i vlasnika fabrike za izradu istih, note u to vreme popularnih svetskih, bolje rečeno američkih šlagera, note popularnih dela iz klasične muzike i prvih domaćih šlagera, udžbenici, publikacije... Otvorena su mnogobrojna pozorišta, izgrađene bioskopske sale, snimljeni prvi jugoslovenski filmovi... Mnoge građevine koje danas krase Beograd, Zagreb, Ljubljanu, Novi Sad, Suboticu i druge varoši, podignute su između dva svetska rata.
