ALLEN 1 www.cristoraul.org PREFACE THERE is no need to explain the origin of this attempt to write the history of Verona, the inherent fascination of the subject speaks for itself. But I cannot let this volume appear without expressing my sincere thanks to all who have assisted me during its preparation. First and foremost I desire to thank the cavaliere Gaetano da Re, of the Biblioteca Comunale at Verona, who, during my two visits to Verona, in 1904 and 1906, placed at my disposal the treasures both of the library and of his learning with the most generous kindness, and since then has settled more than one difficult point. From the other officials of this library, and those of the other libraries I visited, the Biblioteca Capitolare at Verona, the Biblioteca Marciana and the Archivio di Stato (in the Frari) at Venice, and the Archivio Gonzaga at Mantua, I met with the same unfailing and courteous assistance. Among modern works I have found Count Carlo Cipolla’s writings on Verona and his scholarly edition of the early Veronese chroniclers invaluable, while J. M. Gittermann’s Ezzelino III. da Romano, E. Salzer’s Ueber die Anfange der Signorie in Oberitalien, and H. Spangenberg’s Cangrande I are all of the first importance for various periods of Veronese history. La porzione inferiore del territorio padovano, invasa completamente dal mare, costituiva un’ ampia e profonda insenatura che lambiva le pendici delle Alpi occidentali. A causa delle ripetute sedimentazioni vennero poi a formarsi dei rilievi ricchi di vegetazione cui saranno conferiti i nomi di berici ed Euganei. Quest’ ultimi, vulcani sottomarini in piena attività, erano emersi a poco a poco dalle grandi eruzioni dell’ epoca eocenica, per cui le rocce vulcaniche: trachiti, dolerti e in minima parte basalti, avrebbero sollevato e in parecchi punti squarciato i sedimenti che formavano il suolo primitivo della regione. In mezzo ad essi , manifestazioni tipiche dell’ antica attività endogena e chiusasi col periodo miocenico, del vulcanesimo originario, i fumanti laghetti di Arquà e di lispida e le acque e i fanghi termali, per cui la zona e’ ancora famosa. I primi insediamenti umani nella zona oggi occupata dal centro cittadino si fanno risalire all’ XI sec. a.c. e riconducibili ai protovillanoviano padano, periodo preistorico anteriore di alcuni secoli alla civiltà paleoveneta. La classificazione usata per definire i periodi evolutivi della civiltà paleoveneta e’ stata disegnata dall’ archeologo Alessandro prosdocimi basandosi sulla sovrapposizione stratigrafica delle sepolture nella necropoli estense nonchè dalla morfologia e corredo delle tombe, per questo motivo tale partizione viene definita atestina e si basa principalmente su 4 periodi: 1. -

Uncovering The Sources: Historical Characters In Dante's Divine Comedy Abstract A lack of citation of Dante’s specific source material for historical characters who appear in the Divine Comedy is widespread throughout the commentary tradition. I performed a close textual analysis of the Divine Comedy’s historical characters, comparing them with the chronicles, annals and histories of Dante’s time, using both archival research and secondary histories to do so, and interpreted those primary historical texts as potential sources consulted by Dante. The historical characters I focused on fell into three categories: 1) characters involved in the battles of Montaperti and Colle Val d’Elsa, 2) characters belonging to or associated with the Norman, Swabian and Aragonese dynasties of Sicily, 3) characters embroiled in sensational or newsworthy events during Dante’s lifetime. The first two categories analyzed historical events that mostly occurred before Dante was born, and thus focused more heavily on written testimony, while the third category analyzed the news of Dante’s adulthood, and thus focused more on oral tradition. -

Part III The Renewal of Ancient Drama 7 The Reception of Ancient Drama in Renaissance Italy Francesca Schironi Introduction The first reception of Classical drama in a modern language occurred in sixteenth‐ century Italy. Italian neoclassical drama not only served as a basis for the development of European drama—as it provided the theoretical framework and models which were then perfected by the Elizabethan and French dramatists—but also represented a very rich cultural phenomenon in itself. Without aiming to offer a complete analy- sis of theater in Renaissance Italy, I will here give an overview of its most important characteristics, focusing on why neoclassical drama originated in Italy, on the theo- retical debates that this new genre ignited, and on the main trends and themes of Italian “neoclassical” tragedy and comedy as well as their place in the larger Italian cultural milieu. From this survey, I will omit tragedies and comedies written in Latin in the previous centuries, such as Albertino Mussato’s Ecerinis (1314), a tragedy based on Seneca as a model (especially Octavia) and depicting the cruel deeds of Ezzelino III da Romano (1194–1259) against Padua. Even if Latin humanist plays were important predecessors, Italian neoclassical drama was a new phenomenon, which stemmed mostly from the rediscovery of the Latin and Greek originals at the end of the fifteenth century. I will also omit discussing pastoral plays such as Angelo Poliziano’s Orfeo (c. 1472–1480) or Giovan Battista Guarini’s Il pastor fido (c. 1580), which are based on Classical myths and are the predecessors of Italian opera.1 The “Rediscovery” of the Classics in Italy The development of neoclassical drama in Europe was a consequence of the “rediscovery” of Classical literature in humanistic and early Renaissance Italy. -

B. Verci, Storia degli Ecelini, 1779) Introduzione Si è raccontato per secoli e fino a qualche decennio fa che dal castello superiore di Bassano partano della grandi gallerie, che si diramano sia sotto la città che per molti chilometri nel circondario e oltre. Sarebbero le gallerie che il “tiranno Ezzelino” usava per passare non visto e andare fino al castello di Romano, a quello di San Zenone, a Vicenza, a Onara, a Padova, al fiume Piave o al sottostante fiume Brenta per dissetare i suoi cavalli. Sarebbero dei passaggi pieni di trappole, di cadaveri, ma anche di tesori custoditi dallo spirito di Ezzelino che vi si sarebbe aggirato assieme al diavolo ogni notte. La sua anima dannata si sarebbe trovata però, custodita da due diavoli, anche in una misteriosa caverna piena di tesori scavata sotto i ruderi del castello di Romano, da dove sarebbe uscita nelle notti invernali per girare nel paese. Anche sotto lo scomparso castello di Onara ci sarebbero molti tesori e nella confinante palude una buca nascosta, da dove quell’uomo feroce sarebbe caduto direttamente nell’Inferno. A San Zenone poi il suo fantasma sarebbe stato letteralmente di casa, sempre indaffarato a uscire dal colle dove sorgeva il suo castello ogni notte a piedi o a cavallo, per cercare assieme al diavolo di fare del male a qualche sventurato che lo avesse incrociato. -
Mussato Medievale : Le Cronache Della Marca Trevigiana Come Supporto Ideologico All’Ecerinis
Chroniques italiennes web 25 (1-2/2013) MUSSATO MEDIEVALE : LE CRONACHE DELLA MARCA TREVIGIANA COME SUPPORTO IDEOLOGICO ALL’ECERINIS L’Ecerinis di Albertino Mussato, composta nel 1315, racconta il dominio su Padova di Ezzelino III da Romano (1237-1259), contraddistinto da nefandezze, crimini e soprusi. L’intima natura dell’opera viene svelata dall’autore stesso a conclusione dell’Epistola I (v. 136) : « in latiis oris nunc noua miles eris »1. Secondo tale definizione gli elementi formali di assoluta innovazione non vanno disgiunti dallo scopo contingente del testo. La tragedia, infatti, sprona il comune a reagire, perché insidiato dalle mire espansionistiche di Cangrande della Scala, signore di Verona e vera minaccia contro cui è rivolto il messaggio parenetico sotteso2. 1 A.
