Abstract The French Revolution of 1789 was instrumental in the emergence and growth of modern nationalism, the idea that a state should represent, and serve the interests of, a people, or "nation," that shares a common culture and history and feels as one. But national ideas, often with their source in the otherwise cosmopolitan world of the Enlightenment, were also an important cause of the Revolution itself. The rhetoric and documents of the Revolution demonstrate the importance of national ideas. -

Hardcover $39.95/£19.99 This is a new edition of the classic work first published in 1976. In a new preface written in 2000 the author explains that he has not rewritten it since nothing published in the interval has made this necessary, this may well be the case, but (to get minor criticism out of the way at the beginning) it is a pity the new work was not subjected to more rigorous proof reading: apart from minor typos there are peculiarities such as referring to General Bourriene, three different spellings of Beurnonville in one chapter and the mystifying condition affecting Napoleon at Borodino, 'uroedemo'. Whether these were present in the first edition I do not know: if they were, they should have been pointed out and corrected sometime in the intervening 25 years. This is a full-scale biography beginning with Louis Nicolas Davout's aristocratic ancestry and ending with his funeral; each episode of his life is covered in detail and supported by references. A considerable amount of political and general historical narrative is supplied to provide the background to Davout's career, which is considerate to any reader previously unfamiliar with Napoleonic history. Inevitably the central portion of his life is an account of Napoleon's campaigns since he played such a significant part in them but they are viewed from a slightly different angle to the standard Napoleon-centred narratives, which adds an extra dimension: not surprisingly, this is most noticeable in the Jena-Auerstädt chapter. -

Through the art that she both commissioned and purchased, she developed an identity as powerful politically, nurturing, educated, fashionable, and Italianate. Through this patronage, Caroline became influential on stylish, female patronage in both Italy and France. Caroline purchased and commissioned works from artists such as Jean-August-Domonique Ingres, François Gérard, Elizabeth Vigée LeBrun, Antonio Canova and other lesser-known artists of the nineteenth century. -

When Silence Reigns: Sexuality, Affect, and Space in Soldiers’ Memoirs of the Napoleonic Wars Marianne Blidon Centre de recherche de l’Institut de démographie de Paris Université Paris 1-Panthéon Sorbonne (CRIDUP) ABSTRACT: In this paper, I draw on a collection of war memoirs written by soldiers who survived the Napoleonic campaigns. I examine what was sayable or unsayable concerning affect and sexuality in order to better understand the role that these memoirs played in self-narrative within the highly particular context of war. If the present self- narrative is also a sexual and emotional account, these memoirs demonstrate such interpretations of the self that must be seen as a recent phenomenon. After describing the military context and discussing how their testimonies are constructed, I will analyze the traces they have left of their affect and the manner in which space and sexuality are incorporated into their accounts of the war. -

Interview with Frank Samson, Napoleon I By Benjamin Leclercq for Eriz Moreno 2014 In his spare time, Frank Samson, a 46 years old Parisian lawyer specializing in traffic law, becomes Napoleon I. This military uniforms enthusiast is now the official emperor at multiple history reenactments in France and across Europe. He arranged to meet us on a rainy June afternoon in his office based in the luxurious XVI district, five days after fighting the battle of Montmirail (Marne) and two weeks after that of Waterloo. How and when did you start to impersonate Napoleon Bonaparte? I first appeared as Napoleon around 10 years ago, in January 2005. The village of Dinard (Brittany) was celebrating the imperial year and the occasion involved all sorts of events, including reenactments. At that time, the reenactors remained orphaned: Armand Frascuratti, the Corsican who played Napoleon, had retired in 2003. So there was no emperor anymore... For my part, I had been collecting uniforms without being interested in reenactments. It was my costume maker, based in Dinard, precisely, who advised me to make a tour. I appeared as Napoleon on a soiree at the Dinard Casino, with my spouse as the empress, and so the Mayor of Dinard invited me to the big summer reenactment, which became my first encampment (the name given to reenactments): I got adopted. Why Napoleon? It is an extraordinary character, with an amazing life story. See for yourself: Napoleon arrives to France in 1779, when he is 9 and doesn’t know a single word of French; 30 years later, in 1810, he is a quasi-king of the world, having put his brothers and sisters on all the thrones. -

A Reassessment of the British and Allied Economic and Military Mobilization in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (1792-1815) By Ioannis-Dionysios Salavrakos The Wars of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Era lasted from 1792 to 1815. During this period, seven Anti-French Coalitions were formed ; France managed to get the better of the first five of them. The First Coalition was formed between Austria and Prussia (26 June 1792) and was reinforced by the entry of Britain (January 1793) and Spain (March 1793). Minor participants were Tuscany, Naples, Holland and Russia. In February 1795, Tuscany left and was followed by Prussia (April); Holland (May), Spain (August). In 1796, two other Italian States (Piedmont and Sardinia) bowed out. In October 1797, Austria was forced to abandon the alliance : the First Coalition collapsed. The Second Coalition, between Great Britain, Austria, Russia, Naples and the Ottoman Empire (22 June 1799), was terminated on March 25, 1802. A Third Coalition, which comprised Great Britain, Austria, Russia, Sweden, and some small German principalities (April 1805), collapsed by December the same year. The Fourth Coalition, between Great Britain, Austria and Russia, came in October 1806 but was soon aborted (February 1807). The Fifth Coalition, established between Britain, Austria, Spain and Portugal (April 9th, 1809) suffered the same fate when, on October 14, 1809, Vienna surrendered to the French – although the Iberian Peninsula front remained active. Thus until 1810 France had faced five coalitions with immense success. The tide began to turn with the French campaign against Russia (June 1812), which precipitated the Sixth Coalition, formed by Russia and Britain, and soon joined by Spain, Portugal, Austria, Prussia, Sweden and other small German States. -
Joseph Bonaparte and the Crown Jewels
Joseph Bonaparte and the Crown Jewels José Flaugier created a portrait of Joseph Bonaparte, circa 1809. It is depicted in this image. As Napoleon Bonaparte's older brother, Joseph (1768-1844) was the King of Spain between 1808-1813. He was also the King of Naples between 1806-1808. Born in Corsica, like his famous brother, he died in Florence when he was 76 years old. In the meantime ... after Napoleon's second exile ... Joseph sailed to America. With him, allegedly, were some of Spain's crown jewels which he sold to raise funds for his new life. Joseph left the rest of his fortune safely buried in Switzerland, at least for a time, until he sent his trusted secretary to retrieve it all. The former king lived a life of luxury in New Jersey. He called his estate "Point Breeze." His two surviving daughters - Zenaïde and Charlotte - spent time with him there. Accumulating one of America's finest art collections, Joseph remained in the States until 1832. Moving to London, he returned to America once more for a brief visit. Never allowed to return to France, Joseph was given permission to visit his family in Italy. He traveled there, circa 1840. He had not seen his wife -Marie-Julie Bonaparte - for twenty-five years. He remained with his wife for the rest of his life and died, in her arms, on the 28th of July, 1844. Julie died eight months later. Click on the image for a better view. 162 CATHOLICISM AND BONAPARTISM: CATHOLICS AND THE COUP d'ETAT OF LOUIS NAPOLEON BONAPARTE AnIta M4y Deportment of History, CentroI State College, Edmond, Oklahoma This study examines the attitude of Catholics, represented by their newspapers lad bishops, towards the coup cfet2t of Louis Napoleon Bonaparte. An analysis is made of Catholic opinion before, during, and after the coup to determine its import ance to the success of authoritarianism. The evidence leads to the conclusion that Catholic: support only became important after the coup, and was obviously motivated by opportunism. This support was countered by the growth of an opposition move ment Jed by two CatholiC newspGlper5, which replaced the episcopate as the voice of Church independence.
