Indigenous Conservation. Intangibles. Otavalo. Ecuador. Andes ABSTRACT Indigenous communities around the world face pressures from ecotourism practices and conservation. Otavalo, Ecuador, is an example of how local spiritual values can add to the conservation efforts of ecotourism. The Imbakucha watershed includes mountain landscapes with natural and cultural values of numerous indigenous communities where most residents associate their livelihood with iconic, sacred, natural features. Because this region has been conserved with a vibrant artisan economy, it is a well-known cultural landscape in Latin America, and therefore, the increased pressure of globalization affects its preservation as it undergoes a shift from traditional towards contemporary ecotourism practices. We investigate the relationship between the indigenous people and their intangible spiritual environment by local understanding of identity and cultural values, using ethnographic and qualitative research to analyze the influence of spirituality on environmental actions and intersections that reify the native sacred translated into Christianity, to define synchronisms of modernity and the ancestral influence on the Andean culture in the Kichwa Otavalo living in the valley. This study concludes that there is an outlook among indigenous leaders, politicians, researchers, and scholars that a stronger influence of environmental ideals and ecofriendly lifestyles should and can be instilled into the livelihood that exists in indigenous communities to favor sacred sites conservation with development.

Here we bring radiometric evidence (14C, 39Ar–40Ar) of previously unrecognized but significant magmatic activity at partly eroded Imbabura volcano (Ecuador) in late Pleistocene to early Holocene times, on whose perimeter live more than 300,000 persons. Following an effusive stage from 50 to 30 ka with the emplacement of andesitic lava flows on different flanks of its edifice, the activity became explosive with the generation of andesitic block-and-ash flows on its eastern side, beginning at ~ 35 ka cal BP. Subsequently a flank collapse associated with a volcanic blast occurred on the volcano's SW flank at ~ 30 ka cal BP. The resulting debris avalanche and blast breccias cover an area now heavily populated around San Pablo Lake and its source was later concealed by successive dome building episodes at Huarmi which produced ~ 2.8 km3 of silicic andesite.

Riddick Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Cornell University, Snee Hall, Ithaca, New York 14853, USA ([email protected]) [1] We combine new observations of volcano deformation in Latin America with more than 100 previous deformation studies in other areas of the world to constrain the frequency, magnitude, and duration of subaerial volcano deformation events. We discuss implications for eruptive hazards from a given deformation event and the optimum repeat interval for proposed InSAR satellite missions. We use L band (23.6 cm wavelength) satellite-based interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) to make the first systematic search for deformation in all volcanic arcs of Latin America (including Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and the northern and southern Andes), spanning 2006–2008. We combine L and C band (5.6 cm wavelength) InSAR observations over the southern Andes volcanoes to extend the time series from 2002 to 2008 and assess the capabilities of the different radars: L band gives superior results in highly vegetated areas. Our observations reveal 11 areas of volcano deformation, some of them in areas that were thought to be dormant. There is a lack of observed deformation at several erupting volcanoes, probably due to temporal aliasing.

    Connecting: the Aspiring Imbabura Geopark, Ecuador MARGARET HART ROBERTSON - (Prometeo) on behalf of the Provincial Government of Imbabura EP Fábrica Imbabura <[email protected]> The Provincial Government of Imbabura together with other State bodies is backing the bid for a Geopark in the region of Imbabura, Ecuador. Ecuador covers an area roughly equivalent to the State of Arizona and is the smallest of the Earth’s mega-diverse countries, occupying only 0.19% of the world’s surface area. The region is named after the Imbabura volcano, an inactive stratovolcano in North Ecuador that is not considered extinct, although it has not erupted in 14,000 years. Taita Imbabura (Father Imbabura) is considered to be the sacred protector of the region which is rich in geological features such as the Mojando volcano and inter-caldera, (according to myth, Imbabura’s rival for the favours of the nearby Cotacachi volcano, the only female volcano in the region according to the Andean cosmovision), the thermal springs at Yanayacu, Nangulvi and Chachimbiro, the Valle del Chota (home to Ecuadorian football prodigies and part of theAfro-descendent population) and the Lakes and Lagoons of Yaguarcocha, San Pablo, Cuicocha and the waterfalls at Peguche. Imbabura as a region is home to the Otavolo, Natabuela, Zuleta, Cayambe, Caranqui and Awa people, together with the significant Afro-descendent population in the Valle del Chota, with the language of Quichua the only survivor of the original existing native languages. It is an area of cloud forests and outstanding orchid families, plus significant flora and fauna reserves, including the ecological park of Cotacachi/Cayapas.
