JANA PAWŁA II E –mail: [email protected] www.zzsp.miasto.zgierz.p l S t r . 2 11 listopada 2015 Droga do niepodległej Polski 11 listopada stał się datą symboliczną oznaczającą odzyskanie przez Polskę niepodległości w 1918 roku po 123 latach niewoli. Przyjazd Józefa Piłsudskiego do Warszawy i przekazanie mu pełni władzy wojskowej i cywilnej przez Radę Regencyjną zbiegło się przypadkowo w czasie z podpisaniem rozejmu w Compiegne , kończącego działania militarne na frontach I wojny świato- wej. 10 listopada 1918 r. zwolniony z więzienia w Magdeburgu został Józef Piłsudski . Na dworcu w Warszawie, dokąd przyjechał ok. 7 rano, nie było tłumów, bo jego przyjazd nie był pu- blicznie zapowiedziany. Piłsudskiego witali: regent, ks. Zdzisław Lubomirski, komendant naczel- ny POW Adam Koc i kilka innych osobistości. Piłsudski pojechał od razu, w towarzystwie Koca, na "herbatę" do księcia Lubomirskiego w jego domu przy Frascati. Według wspomnień księżny Marii Lubomirskiej jej mąż przekonywał Piłsudskiego, że "on jeden Polskę zbawić potrafi w tym historycznym momencie". Według relacji księcia (jednej z dwóch) Piłsudski chciał od razu jechać do Lublina, gdzie 6-7 listopada powstał wybitnie lewicowy Tymczasowy Rząd Ludowy Republiki Polskiej z Ignacym Daszyńskim na czele i Rydzem-Śmigłym jako ministrem wojny. Piłsudski mó- wił: "Jest to rząd mój, rząd moich przyjaciół". Wysłuchał argumentacji Lubomirskiego, że rząd ten jest partyjny, a nie ogólnonarodowy i powiedział: "Tak, ale jest on na wolnej ziemi". Na to Lubo- mirski wyraził przekonanie, że lada dzień cała ziemia będzie wolna. Piłsudski mruknął: "No, ja zobaczę". 11 listopada o godzinie 11, w wagonie kolejowym w Compiegne we Francji podpisano za- wieszenie broni na froncie zachodnim. -

Jagiellonska 57-59, 03-301 Warsaw, Poland a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c t JEL Codes: Traditional wisdom in economics holds that institutional change runs from political institutions E42 to economic ones, with the distribution of political power affecting the creation of property rights E52 and rule of law. This hierarchy of institutions has been observed in macroeconomic policy, where N14 it has long been understood that there are political incentives for economic mismanagement, E02 namely the creation of inflation. But are there longer-term effects of currency manipulation on Keywords: the rule of law in a country? That is, does the hierarchy not always hold? This paper answers this Poland question by focusing on a specific case of monetary instability, the newly-independent Second Inflation Polish Republic of 1918 to 1939. Using appropriate econometric techniques on a new database of Institutions historical data, I find that monetary profligacy correlates strongly with significantly lower levels Rule of law of the rule of law. This result is robust to several tests and most specifications, including the use Monetary policy of a new variable for measuring access to the political system. -

Poles and Jews: The Quest For Self-Determination 1919- 1934 By Feigue Cieplinski Poland became an independent nation against all odds in the interwar period and retained her sovereignty from 1919 to 1939; hence the concept “interwar Poland.” The vicissitudes of her existence earned her the name of “God’s Playground.” [1] The Jews within her borders shared her history since 1240 C.E. Their freedoms during this period, unequaled in other places of Western Europe, earned Poland the Biblical allusion of “New Canaan.” [2] In contrast, some scholars have described Poland’s Jewry in the interwar Republic as being “On the Edge Of Destruction.” [3] That Polish Jewry was in distress is attested by the urgent visit of Mr. Neville Laski, a member of the British Joint Foreign Committee closely associated with the American Jewish Committee (AJC) and the Joint Distribution Committee, in 1934. [4] His August visit fell between two historical events framing Polish Jewry’s status: seven months before, in January of that year, Poland and Germany signed a bilateral non- aggression declaration and in September Colonel Josef Beck, as Foreign Minister, announced in Geneva, his country’s unilateral abrogation of the Minorities Treaty in force since 1919. The scholars listed below have studied separately either the birth of Poland and the imposition of the Minorities Protection Treaty, the rapprochement between Poland and Germany, or the situation of the Jews in Poland. However, they have paid scant attention to the nexus between the rise of Hitler, the rapprochement between Poland and Germany, the demise of the Minorities Protection Treaty, and the consequent worsening situation of Polish Jewry. -

PRZEGLĄD ZACHODNI II, 2017 STANISŁAW ŻERKO Poznań THE SOVIET THREAT IN STANISŁAW CAT-MACKIEWICZ’S JOURNALISTIC WRITINGS DURING WORLD WAR II Stanisław Mackiewicz, known as Cat-Mackiewicz – the pseudonym1 he assumed in the 1920s – is still recognised as one of the most prominent Polish political journal- ists and historical essayists. He also wrote about literary history, and was particularly well known as a specialist in and admirer of Russian literature. He was a prolific writer. He wrote “21 books, 55 pamphlets, and over 300 papers which were a page or column long.”2 His recently published Selected Writings, edited by Jan Sadkiewicz, already comprise 19 volumes, and more are to be published. Mackiewicz’s writings have not ceased to be of great interest, and younger readers are enthusiastic when they discover them, which is to be expected. One of the youngest reviewers of Mac- kiewicz’s Selected Writings wrote: “I do not hesitate to call Stanisław Mackiewicz the most outstanding Polish journalist of the last century.”3 Mackiewicz was a conservative, a monarchist, a supporter of Piłsudski and a lead- ing Polish Germanophile, and a writer and journalist with an extraordinarily colourful personality. His biography by Jerzy Jaruzelski4 is an excellent account of the above. Between World Wars I and II the Słowo [Word] daily was published in Vilnius, and Cat-Mackiewicz was its editor-in-chief. Various aspects of his and his colleagues’ political writings published there are also analysed in his biography. Słowo was not a provincial daily, but was available and read in all major Polish cities. -

Nordisk Østforum | 34, 2020: 103–124 | ISSN 1891-1773 Fagfellevurdert Den galiziska mångfaldens tragedi: professorsmorden i krigstidens Lviv och åminnelsen av dem Eleonora Narvselius* Lunds universitet, Sverige Abstract: A tragedy of the Galician diversity: Murder and commemoration of Polish professors killed in Lviv during WWII In popular imagery, the former Habsburg province of Galicia and its capital city Lemberg/ Lwów/Lviv have been acclaimed for their unique mixture of religions, cultures and national- ities. However, there are also darker sides of this Galician diversity, as became evident during the wars and crises of the first half of the twentieth century. It is instructive to explore how the entanglements between collective and individual choices, cultural genealogies and political aspirations looked in practice in this part of Europe, and how historical events of the twentieth century have reflected this complexity. This article explores one such event: the murder of a group of eminent Polish academics during the Nazi occupation of Lviv/Lwów. After the war, this tragic episode was commemorated quite independently in the two parts of Galicia now divided by the redrawn Polish–(Soviet)Ukrainian border. The episode remains controversial due to the contradictory interpretative frameworks and agenda-setting of various actors involved into the memorialization. The author draws on Michael Rothberg’s concept of multidirectional memory to highlight how reverberations of Galician diversity can be approached from an anthropological perspective, focusing on meaning-making and agency.
