19-10 Morlot Avenue Andrew Markowitz, Rabbi Fair Lawn, NJ 07410 Benjamin Yudin, Rabbi Emeritus 201.791.7910/shomrei-torah.org T HE WEEKLY BRIEF: PARSHAT MATOT-MASEI / SHABBAT MEVARCHIM Tammuz 26, 5780 / July 17-8, 2020 Parsha/Haftorah: Artscroll: 900/1193; Hertz: 702/725; Living Torah: 822/1217 Pirkei Avot: Chapter 1 From the Desk of the new President of Shomrei Torah, Danny Pickett Dear Shomrei Torah Member, I am honored and humbled to be chosen to serve as the next president of Shomrei Torah. As this is my first opportunity to address the general membership, I would first like to share a little about myself and then briefly discuss some thoughts regarding the present and future of Shomrei Torah. About Me Many of you know me well, some not so well and others may not know me at all (but have probably heard my booming voice). I was born in Haifa in December 1976. In 1980, my parents, who were olim for 12 years, moved back to the United States. I grew up the youngest of four boys in Passaic, where we davened at the Young Israel. My parents gave their time and energy to the synagogue and we were expected to help as well. I attended Hillel Academy until fifth grade when I switched into Yavneh. I attended Frisch for high school and then spent a year studying at the Israeli yeshiva Machon Meir. Following my year in Israel I went to the University of Maryland, College Park where I majored in Government and Politics and was active in the Hillel. Lisa and I actually met at the Hillel and got married shortly after graduation. We first lived in Silver Spring and then in the Midwood section of Brooklyn. After living there for three years, we knew we were not city folks and were looking to move. We came to check out Fair Lawn and stopped in front of Shomrei Torah. The building was closed, but Deena Jarshow saw us outside. She stopped, spoke with us and gave our contact information to Renee Zimbalist. We soon spent a Shabbat at the Fogelmans, never checked out another town and moved to Fair Lawn in May 2005. We have three children – Micah (16), Atara (13) and Jonah (9). Lisa is a clinical social worker with the Department of Veterans Affairs. I work in Basking Ridge as an attorney for a law firm that almost exclusively serves the insurance industry. Coming Back Together These last few months have been difficult for the entire Shomrei Torah community. Unfortunately, our community, like Jewish communities the world over, was not spared suffering. More generally, the distance we felt as a community was palpable. However, with the start of “pod” minyanim and now larger outdoor services and, most recently, the resumption of in person group learning, we can see the return to some form of normalcy on the horizon. Therefore, the first task for the leadership team will be prepare our Shul for reopening when the state and local health authorities grant permission to do so and when our rabbinic and lay leadership determine it is appropriate. Towards that end, we have formed a reopening task force made up of medical professionals, HVAC specialists, and management professionals. The task force has already met to discuss some of the basic issues that will need to be addressed including capacity, ventilation and cleaning with the foremost priority being the safety of our congregants. Additionally, there is a team preparing for the High Holidays services, which we hope we will be able to hold in our building, but which will no doubt look different then they have in previous years (more information about this will be forthcoming in the next month). There remains much work to be done, but rest assured that the planning for reopening the synagogue and High Holidays has begun. Preparing for the future Looking forward, we are also preparing for the future of our Shul. As president, one of my goals is to expand our membership and the many important roles the Shul has in the lives of our members. To effectively achieve these objectives, I will be working with our leadership team and with Rabbi and Sara Markowitz to examine all aspects of our Shul operations and generate strategic plans for our anticipated growth over the next three to five years. I will also be working with Rabbi and Shevi Yudin to get their input and direction to ensure that the Shul continues to embody the mesorah and values they worked so diligently to instill into the Shul. We are excited about our opportunities to meaningfully grow Shomrei Torah. With this bold objective, we know we can not do this alone and we need the full engagement of every member of our Kehilah. So, I am personally asking all members to volunteer your talents and join us in the enriching experience of building the bright future of Shomrei Torah. Please feel free to reach out to me regarding any comments, questions, volunteer opportunities or ideas for our Shul at [email protected].
