    NATAN OPHIR Rav Kook and Dr. Revel: A Shared Vision for a Central Universal Yeshiva? his article examines a little known episode in the history of two famous schools, Yeshivat Mercaz HaRav-Central Universal TYeshiva (CUY) 1 and the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS). Specifically, it examines several exchanges between R. Abraham Isaac Kook and R. Dr. Bernard Revel. Their discussion began in 1918, continued when R. Kook visited New York in 1924, and culminated in a written proposal by Dr. Revel on May 17, 1927. The proposal would have meant uniting what we now call the Torah u- Madda 2 ideology developed in New York with Torat Ere z. Yisrael of Jerusalem. There are lacunae in this story that leave room for speculation. Nevertheless, the main plot will, I believe, be of special interest to read - ers of this journal, and may give rise to interesting observations about the protagonists. Besides adding a chapter to the history of Torah u- Madda in the twentieth century, this story provides a glimpse into a rel - atively unknown phase in the early development of both Yeshiva College and CUY. NATAN OPHIR (O FFENBACHER ) directs Meorot, a center in Jerusalem for Jewish Meditation and Neuro-Psychology. An alumnus of Yeshiva College, he received ordination from Yeshivat Mercaz HaRav and a Ph.D in Jewish Philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he served as rabbi of the campus for sixteen years.     Shabbat-B'Shabbato – Parshat Vayeira No 1596: 18 Cheshvan 5776 (31 October 2015) AS SHABBAT APPROACHES The Binding of Yitzchak - by Esti Rosenberg, Head of the Midrasha for Women, Migdal Oz "He suppressed his pity in order to perform Your will with a complete heart. So let Your mercy suppress Your anger against us." These words from the "Memories" section of the prayers for Rosh Hashanah are an expression of an abstract of the Binding of Yitzchak – the human ability to overpower our natural mercy and our desires when they come up against the obligations and the commands of the Creator of the World. The Holy One, Blessed be He, demands that man must be willing to abandon some of his own inclinations, and sometimes even be willing to give up his life and to overcome his natural feelings of mercy as part of our acceptance of the yoke of heaven. This main element of the link between the Creator and His creatures first appeared in the way that G-d tested Avraham. In the end Yitzchak was not offered as a sacrifice, but the essence of personal sacrifice in response to a command and to the will of the Creator was born on Mount Moriah, and it remains the basis of our religious lives. What did Avraham feel at the time when he began to understand this very significant point? What emotions did he experience when he climbed Mount Moriah? Two world giants tried to describe Avraham's emotions at this point. Giustiniani; the Sixteenth-Century Origins of the Jewish Law of Copyright Neil Weinstock Netanel* Copyright scholars are almost universally unaware of Jewish copyright law, a rich body of copyright doctrine and jurisprudence that developed in parallel with Anglo- American and Continental European copyright laws and the printers’ privileges that preceded them. Jewish copyright law traces its origins to a dispute adjudicated some 150 years before modern copyright law is typically said to have emerged with the Statute of Anne of 1709. This essay, the beginning of a book project about Jewish copyright law, examines that dispute, the case of the Maharam of Padua v. Giustiniani. In 1550, Rabbi Meir ben Isaac Katzenellenbogen of Padua (known by the Hebrew acronym, the “Maharam” of Padua) published a new edition of Moses Maimonides’ seminal code of Jewish law, the Mishneh Torah. Katzenellenbogen invested significant time, effort, and money in producing the edition. He and his son also added their own commentary on Maimonides’ text. Since Jews were forbidden to print books in sixteenth- century Italy, Katzenellenbogen arranged to have his edition printed by a Christian printer, Alvise Bragadini. Bragadini’s chief rival, Marc Antonio Giustiniani, responded by issuing a cheaper edition that both copied the Maharam’s annotations and included an introduction criticizing them. Katzenellenbogen then asked Rabbi Moses Isserles, European Jewry’s leading juridical authority of the day, to forbid distribution of the Giustiniani edition. Isserles had to grapple with first principles. At this early stage of print, an author- editor’s claim to have an exclusive right to publish a given book was a case of first impression.

On From a Parent Tuesday night, the Yeshiva marked the yartzeit of one of the greatest Chasidic Rebbes, the famed Noam Elimelech Spotlight on Yeshiva: Purim Weekend Zt"l. The Rosh HaYeshiva often refers to his teaching to always look for positive traits in other people. New Rav of the Old City The theme of the night was "Vayakhel Moshe", and Moshe gathered -the greatness of a true tzadik is his ability to love all Jews and bring them together. Here is a video clip of a story Rav Bina told about how the zchut of the Noam Elimelech Z"tl helped Israel win the Six-Day War. Spotlight on Yeshiva: Shabbat at the homes of Alumni in Israel Dear graduates living in Israel, On behalf of Yeshivat Netiv Aryeh and myself, I want to thank all the families who hosted our students last Shabbat Parshat Vayakhel. Getting a sample of the homes of our alumni serves as an inspiration to our students. Although the Yeshiva puts a lot of effort in instilling the love of Torah, love of Eretz Yisrael and love of Am Yisrael in each of our students, the visit in the home of our graduates can make a greater impact on their future as It presents them with a sample of the religious family life, the role of the Jewish wife, as well as a positive impression of life in Israel.

Vertientes del Judaismo • LA ORTODOXIA MODERNA • En este punto de vista, el judaísmo ortodoxo puede "ser enriquecido" por su intersección con la modernidad. • Además, "la sociedad moderna crea oportunidades para ser ciudadanos productivos que participan en la obra divina de la transformación del mundo en beneficio de la humanidad". • Al mismo tiempo, con el fin de preservar la integridad de la Halajá, cualquier área de “fuerte inconsistencia y conflicto" entre la Torá y la cultura moderna debe ser evitada.     Rabbi Yosef Zvi Rimon Rabbi Yosef Zvi Rimon is an Israeli talmid chachom, who serves today as the rav of the Lev Academic Center of The Jerusalem College of Technology (JCT), an academic program combined with Jewish studies. He teaches in the Herzog College and the Migdal Oz Midrasha, serves as a synagogue rabbi in south Alon Shvut and founded an Employment Center for the Gush Katif residents. For many years Rav Rimon was a rosh mesivta in a yeshiva, and taught, researched and published many articles and books on halachic topics and their application to modern life, including: Jewish laws of military service, Shmittah, Shabbat and a series of books: Halacha miMekorah, Mekorot Hilchos Chaggai Israel, and more. The mishna in Avot, Chapter 3 mishna 9, relates: One whose deeds are greater than his wisdom, his wisdom will endure. These words ably describe Rabbi Rimon in his community work and his diligent learning and dissemination of Torah to students and rabbis. His numerous activities are unique in their rare blend of a Torah personality who is well versed in his learning, a man of action who functions in our complex reality, and a person capable of bringing a potential to fruition. These two strengths come to the fore in his personality and his widespread influence on the public. The areas which Rabbi Rimon is particularly involved in are directly related to the revival of Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel, and are characterized by the attempt to shape Torah life in the challenging modern reality. For example: guidelines for Torah observant soldiers serving in the army, detailed instructions to farmers on matters of Shmitta, and standing at the head of the Lev Academic Center beth midrash which seeks to produce Torah observant scientists who are trailblazers in the fields of science and Torah, and more.
