Funding Your Journey Masa Israel Journey offers every eligible participant between the ages of 18 and 20 a grant of $1,000 toward the cost of participation in a gap year program in Israel. If Erica Coleman not overtly political, the methods of engagement frequently had politics just beneath Copy Editor the surface. Engagement meant understanding Israel’s importance to the world Jewish community as well as its right to exist — both in a general sense and in relation to the Yakov Wisniewski events of the day. This often turned engagement into a reactive enterprise — how the commu- Design Director nity could shore up support for this policy or for that war, and how Israel’s actions could best be presented and explained. THE STEINHARDT The reasons for this were understandable. There was a widespread perception of Israel being FOUNDATION under siege and a general sentiment that Diaspora communities could serve as Israel’s ambassa- FOR JEWISH LIFE dors. Moreover, a fear of losing young Jews to waves of anti-Israel agitation spurred campaigns to arm them with Israel’s side of the story. But ultimately, such efforts were a misuse of both Michael H. Steinhardt Israel and of American Jews. As the conflict became more nuanced and information more wide- Chairman spread, the Hasbarah method — explaining Israel through public relations — came to be dis- Robert P.     Shabbat-B'Shabbato – Parshat Vayeira No 1596: 18 Cheshvan 5776 (31 October 2015) AS SHABBAT APPROACHES The Binding of Yitzchak - by Esti Rosenberg, Head of the Midrasha for Women, Migdal Oz "He suppressed his pity in order to perform Your will with a complete heart. So let Your mercy suppress Your anger against us." These words from the "Memories" section of the prayers for Rosh Hashanah are an expression of an abstract of the Binding of Yitzchak – the human ability to overpower our natural mercy and our desires when they come up against the obligations and the commands of the Creator of the World. The Holy One, Blessed be He, demands that man must be willing to abandon some of his own inclinations, and sometimes even be willing to give up his life and to overcome his natural feelings of mercy as part of our acceptance of the yoke of heaven. This main element of the link between the Creator and His creatures first appeared in the way that G-d tested Avraham. In the end Yitzchak was not offered as a sacrifice, but the essence of personal sacrifice in response to a command and to the will of the Creator was born on Mount Moriah, and it remains the basis of our religious lives. What did Avraham feel at the time when he began to understand this very significant point? What emotions did he experience when he climbed Mount Moriah? Two world giants tried to describe Avraham's emotions at this point. Rav Kook writes, "Avraham did not lose any sleep that night, because of the clear knowledge that had come to him through the word of G-d.

Although the members of the subcommittee do not want to make definitive judgments on the applicability of education in Israel to American needs, they are most favorably impressed by the great emphasis which the Israelis place on early childhood programs, vocational/technical education, and residential youth villages. The people of Israel are considered profoundly dedicated to the support of education at every level. The country works toward expansion of opportunities for education, based upon a belief that the educational system is the key to the resolution of major social problems. In the second part of the report, the detailed itinerary of the subcommittee is described with annotated comments about the places and persons visited. In the last part, appendixes describing in great depth characteristics of the Israeli education system (higher education in Israel, education and culture, and the kibbutz) are reprinted. Some Jews were tamei (ritually impure) because of contact with a dead body and therefore unable to participate in the korban Pesach on the first anniversary of the Exodus. They complained to Moshe about missing the opportunity to participate in this holy mitzvah because they performed the mitzvah of caring for a deceased Jew. God responded by providing a second opportunity for them to offer the Korban Pesach a month later – Pesach Sheni (Bemidbar 9:6-10). (According to Rashi, God would have added Pesach Sheni anyway but gave the people the merit of having the mitzvah presented through their initiative.) When the Torah presents the Moedim (special days of coming close to Hashem, or holidays) in Emor, Pesach Sheni is missing, because it arose separately and is only a Moed for those who are tamei on Pesach.
