A NEW SPECIES OF LEPIDOZIA (HEPATICAE) FROM ,

HIROSHI DOEl!

Very recently, I reported ten species of Lepidozia (Lepidoziaceae) from Seram Island, Indonesia, on the basis of a collection made by the botanical expeditions to Central Moluccas of the University of Tokyo and Herbarium Bogoriense (Doei 1987). In the collection, I found a distinctive new species of Lepidozia. The species is best characterized by the filiform plants as well as by the unlobed and long triangular leaves. As the species was recorded as nomen nudum in that paper, I will formally describe it below. I wish to express my cordial thanks to Prof. M. Tamura of Kobe University for his kind advice and encouragement throughout the present study. Thanks are also due to Mr. H. Akiyama of Kyoto University who kindly afforded me an opportunity to study his interesting collection and to Prof. N . Kitagawa of Nara University of Educa tion who gave me valuable suggestions and critical advice.

Lepidozia integrifolia Doei, sp. novo (Fig. I) Planta dioica, magna, ad 70 mm longa, filiformis, rufobrunnea. Folia remota, suberecta vel erecto-patula, anguste triangulata, integra, fere symmetrica, apice acuta. Cellulae foliorum subquadratae ad rectangulares, parietibus aequaliter incrassatis, trigonis nullis. Amphigastria remota, parva, tra peziformia vel subquadrata, subintegra, appressa. Plants long and filiform, regularly pinnate, reddish brown in herbarium material, ascend ing or prostrate, in compact mats. Stems up to 70 mm long, 180-230.um thick, with leaves 400- 500 .urn wide, composed of about 33 rows of cortical cells; outermost cortical cells mostly 12- 18 x 7- 10 .urn in cross section and 25-38 x 12-15 flm in longitudinal section, walls very thick; inner cortical cells rather small; medullary cells larger (15-25 x 8-13 flm); lateral branches up to 40 mm long, 70-150 flm thick, with leaves 380-500 flm wide, usually tapering and flagelliform; rhizoids sparse. Stem-leaves distant, suberect, transversely inserted, some what adaxially concave, narrowly triangular, gradually narrowed to the acute apex, nearly symmetrical, 300-400 flm long (about 15 cells long), 150-200.um wide (about 10 cells wide) at base, usually unlobed but occasionally with an obsolete lateral tooth. Branch-leaves distant, erect-spreading, narrowly triangular to ovate-triangular, with an acute apex, nearly symmetrical, 290- 350 flm long (about 16 cells long), 120-140 flm wide (about 9 cells wide) at base, usually unlobed but occasionally with a minute and blunt lateral tooth. Leaf cells rather regularly arranged in longitudinal rows, subquadrate to rectangular, mostly 15- 20(- 25) x 12- 15 flm; walls equally thick, without trigones; cuticle occasionally verruculose. Stem-underleaves small, distant, appressed to the stem, transversely inserted, trapezoid to subquadrate, 100--150 flm

38 39 40 ,..., H. DOE!: A new species of Lepidozia from Seram Island 423 long (about 6 cells long), 110-140 pm wide (about 9 cells wide) at base, the apices subentire; cells similar to those of leaves. Branch-underleaves l00-110,um long (about 5-6 cells long), 70-90 ,urn wide (about 4~6 cells long), otherwise similar to stem-underleaves. Dioicous. Gynoecia on abbreviated ventral branches; bracts in 4-5 pairs, somewhat larger than leaves, closely imbricate, erect-spreading, ovate, 350-400 pm long, 160-240,um wide, (2-)3-4-lobed to about 1/7 of the length, with minutely toothed margins; median cells subrectangular, (25- )38- 68 x 10-18 pm; walls very thick (about 5-7 pm thick), without tri gones; cuticle smooth; innermost bract irregularly lobed to 1/5-1/3 of the leaf length, with lobes occasionally ending in a slime papilla; bracteoles similar to bracts. Perianths subcylin drical, 2.5-3 mm long, 0.6-0.7 mm wide, somewhat plicate above and gradually narrowed to crenulate mouths; median cells long-subrectangular, 65- 100 x 15-25 pm. Androecia on ab breviated ventral branches; bracts in 6-9 pairs, closely imbricate, shallowly bilobed, strongly convex, 330-450 ,urn long, 200-300 pm wide; median cells of discus quadrate to subrectangular, 25-45 x 18-28 pm; antheridial bodies about 200 pm long, with biseriate stalks. Capsule ovoid, reddish brown, about 1.5 mm long, 0.5 mm wide. Spores yellowish brown, 17-23,um in diameter, minutely verrucose. Elaters reddish brown, 120-250 pm long, 1O-15,um wide, bispiral. Holotype: W. SERAM . Kecamatan : en route from the upper elevation to the lOP of Gunung (=Mt.) Totaniwel, Tihulale, ca. 1170 m alt. , on branch, colI. H. Akiyama C- 15811 in KYO , isotype in Bogor (so). Other specimen examined. : C. SERAM. , Kecamatan : en route from Wae Pasola Hatu to the top of Gunung C= Mt.) Meseleinan CJI. Meseleinan), ca. 1220 malt., on branch, colI. H. Akiyama C-16201 in KYO . Range.: Endemic to Seram. Lepidozia integrifolia is unique in the genus in the long triangular leaves not lobed but simply acute at apices. The unlobed leaf seems to be caused by reduction of a lobe, as it is occasionally possessed of an almost obsolete tooth. This new species seems to be most closely related to Lepidozia squamifolia Steph., but the latter is distinguished by the smaller plants (10- 20 mm long) and the sharply bilobed leaves. The new species is related also to L. supradecomposita Lindenb., but the latter is readily distinguished by the more robust and pale brown (not reddish) plants as well as by the bilobed stem-leaves and the 3-4-lobed branch-leaves. L. in tegrifolia is similar to L. trichodes (Reinw., Blume & Nees) Nees which occurs rather common in Seram, but the latter is easily separated from the former by the subrectangular leaves whose apices are 4-divided into divergent and tusk-like lobes.
